That album in its entirety is excellent. Frontman Ian Hunter is amazing. Guitarist Mick Ralphs later joined Bad Company. This album has some familiar tunes - a cover of Sweet Jane - Lou Reed's classic, and Ready for Love (eventually Bad Company)

Ned from Spain here for the mighty Mott ! Thanks for the reaction. Lead singer Ian Hunter sounds a bit like Dylan as he was a big fan. He also wrote some of the greatest lyrics and is a superb show man. Mick Ralphs on guitar wrote this and it sounds like a Bad Company song, which was his next band. The rest of the band are awesome particularly the under appreciated drummer Dale " Buffin" Griffin ! The production by Mr David Bowie is crushing. Saturday Gigs, Born Late '58, Violence, Crash St. Kidds, Alice, Pearl n Roy, Ballad of Mott, Foxy Foxy, Marionette, Honaloochie Boogie, I Wish I Was Your Mother, Hymn For The Dudes......

My favorite Mott tune. I got introduced to Mott through their Live at the Hammersmith album. Never saw them in my youth, but I was fortunate enough to see them on their 8 city tour of the US in 2019. I think it was their first tour of the US in 45 years.

Hi Guys, Mott the Hoople were high in the music charts when I was still at school in the 70's. Ian Hunter is an amazing frontman and his solo work is still going today. The group had hit hard times and were ready to give up when along came a young man you may have heard of called David Bowie. He had written a song called "All the young dudes" and gave it to Ian. They knew each other through Mick Ronson, David's lead guitarist in The Spiders From Mars. The song became a massive hit and Mott were finally on the map and seen on tv in the charts. There is plenty of great songs from them and you should checkout "Once Bitten Twice Shy" which was his 1st massive solo hit ...." the icon intro > "Hello" ! ... Yep ...so simple, but after decades just mention the song and people will go > "Hello", in the way Ian says it. I mentioned the late Mick Ronson who had a few brilliant solo albums also. He joined Ian Hunter for an album together and boy is it a belter. Tracks like "American Woman" & "The Loner" and there is an instrumental from Mick called "Sweet Dreamer" and is a wonderful nod to the late Roy Buchanan's track "Sweet Dreams" ... Roy's track is this incredibly beautiful guitar solo and Mick just takes it's essense and make a track his own but so obviously for Roy ...even with the name "Sweet Dreamer" and of course the style and tone of his playing is Roys style. You need to hear Roys 1st then listen to Mick play ...Omg ! Soooo beautiful. ...The album of Ian & Mick is called "YUI Orta" which translates into "Why you ! ..I ought to ..." ....if continued it would probably have said .. "Why you, I ought to thump you for being so good, why didn't we hook up before after all these years " ? !!! Lol Sadly we lost Mick not that long after. I also suggest you checkout his solo albums. If you love David Bowie you'll be convinced sometimes it's Bowie singing ...It is Mick ! This was excellent ! Great track to play, thankyou ! This group takes me back to my school days. Byee Jim X

The Stones album Between the Buttons had a sound that appealed to Atlantic Records producer Guy Stevens (the Stones' Dylanesque tracks like She Smiled Sweetly and All Sold Out). He set out to create a band that had the Stones' raw raucousness and Dylanesque vocals. He grabbed a sort of all-everything band. They were called Silence when doing rock, The Doc Thomas Group when doing soul and The Shakedown Sound when they were backing up singers touring the UK. He found Ian Hunter as a singer, who gave him the Dylanesque phrasings that he wanted. He then unleashed that band on the UK. Live Mott the Hoople were the Stones' punk stepchildren (look for Rock & Roll Queen live from them). Even if you listen to their live album from '74 they're still punky. But the power is unavoidable. Listen to the 16+ minute medley from that set, it's epic. Also, if you really want proggy style Mott, listen to the song Violence. It was literally the band's swan song as Ian forced Mick Ralphs to stretch way beyond his comfort zone to play it (they came to fisticuffs during the recording, and Ralphs walked out on the band after the album Mott).

The All the Young Dudes album, produced by Bowie, is incredible, every single song is amazing and different. Check out the title cut, All the Young Dudes, their cover of Velvet Underground's Sweet Jane is a classic. Other cuts: Mama's Little Jewel, Soft Ground, Sea Diver and All the Way From Memphis. One of my favorite bands. Your favorite band's favorite band. Might not have started here, but go to "All the Way From Memphis," or "All the Young Dudes," "Whizz Kid," "Hymn for the Dudes (my personal fave)," and "Roll Away the Stone" or go to pure ProtoPunk "Death May be Your Santa Claus" or "The Moon Upstairs." Definitely Proto-Punk. Mick Ralphs later took the same guitar riff with his next band, Bad Company and used it for "Can't Get Enough." Somewhere between Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones. Criminally underrated.

Gute Reise 🤘

MtH were pretty big in the 70s. 'All the young dudes' was their first hit, but prior to having this hit (written by David Bowie) they released four great albums -'Mott the Hoople'. 'Mad Shadows', 'Brain Capers' and 'Wildlife'. They were a brilliant live band - their concerts were absolutely wild. I saw them a few times before they made it big with 'Dudes' and their shows were great. They became much more commercial afterwards and, although still good, were never the same to the earlier fans. They were much more sucsessful though!

The Stones and Mott come from a similar background of blues based rock but Mott is way more powerful and wild. Plus you can understand Ian's words when he sings and as a survivor of the 1960s 70s rock scene a fantastic raconteur with a great sense of humor. More Mott pleez...if ya know what's good for ya.

This pushes the Stones and Faces thing more into glam territory. They were influential on some of the proto-punk that came after. "Brain Capers", prior this, is very good. Great band! Usually put in the “ glam rock” category, but they sound nothing like T Rex. Brain Capers sounds heavy, proto- metal, but All the Young Dudes and Mott are their high point. Definitely check out the title track, written by Bowie, which I’m sure you heard, they also have the original version of Bad Co “ Ready for Love” which I prefer( guitarist Mick Ralphs would found Bad Company with Paul Rodgers). Other songs to try are “ All the Way From Memphis”” Driving Sister” “ Mommas Little Jewel” and the impossibly catchy “ Honaloochie Boogie”. “ Death may be your Santa Claus “ is another. They were a great live band as well.
