You can add crushed menthol and/or peppermint oil if you want a cooling effect. You also can add a healthy splash of your favorite aftershave or cologne to give it a scent.

Even mentioned that it cannot be microwaved as it doesn't contain glycerin. I only microwave for 10 seconds to soften the stick to make a ball in my palms and then push it from the center to the sides of the shaving bowl evenly. By this way, it will not crack or split after using it many times and definitely lasts longer. P.S. It costs 60 cents in Turkey

I used arko for the first time today to shave my head. My razor was a gillette fat boy, and a Wilkinson sword blade. It was the best shave I have ever had! I just bought a 12 pack

Turkish barbers have been using Arko sticks in that way since forever! Pro tip: after you have finished, rinse the mug from lather. And turn it upside down. This will prevent the Arko from drying :)

I love this stuff! My favourite shaving soap! It lathers up exceptionally well, it's super slick and smells great! Plus it's so cheap. You simply can not go wrong with this soap, no wonder it's been around for over 60 years. The Arko Aftershave Balm is great too. Nice video Geo.👍

Geo, when you rubbed your hands together reminded me of when my dad was getting dressed in a hurry,with his rough hands he would rub his hands together really fast and hard and give his shirt a quick ironing with his hands and I swear to you it would actually press out most of the wrinkles😅

Love it or hate it you have to admit it offers fantastic value for money. It's cheap and widely available and if you're short on finances you can combine it with a basic boar brush for great results

The quality of synthetic bristle brushes have gotten to the point I would go that route now rather than boar hair. You're right though, ARKO is a great product for the money. Derby is a good choice too if you're looking for a low cost shaving stick. Not replacing my Col. Conk at home but I've carried both for road trips.

@@dannybeeson5084 Brush choice is a difficult subject because everyone has their own personal preference. I don't use Arko in my day-to-day either but I always have a stick or two ready because, as you mentioned, they come in handy for travel. I don't know about other countries but where I live, a stick costs ~0.6 euro so it's a steal.

Geo👍👍 Nice demo using the ARKO stick, I've done this using a wire cheese slicer to make very thin wafers of soap, then press into a suitable container. ARKO is one of those soaps, either you love it or hate it. It's always worked good for me. Thanks for all the great videos this past year, hope in 2021 you can produce many more. Just got my first safety razor and it was a face full of blood, the learning curve is there :D When going with the grain it went ok but it was still verry rough so I went against the grain too (with a new lather) and thats where it went wrong some how, totally against my hand! But anyway, even with that messy shave and not that great of a lather it still feels a LOT better than when I shaved with a normal g*llette razor! Also noticed I got an aftershave with alcohol :

I press some of this into an old Nivea travel size (Dollar Tree) face cream flat "disk shapped" container to have mini pucks for traveling...don't have to carry the whole stick. About an inch and a half of the stick fits into the container nicely, once pressed in. I can travel 6-8 weeks with that amount (shave 2-3 times a week) . One can either puck lather or spread the soap onto my face with my fingers and face lather.

I also mould it to my shaving bowl to king of make a kind of puck. However, I find it a good idea to leave it in a warm room, say you’re living room, before easily moulding into your container.

Do not try and melt any tallow soap. Only Glycerine based ones will work. You can use a cheese grater on tallow soaps and then pack the shreds into whatever.

@@geofatboy A pot on a pot. The lower pot has water that is brought to a boil and provides heat to the upper pot that is even and won't exceed 212F/100C. Still a bad idea for tallow soaps.

I thought geo mentioned moulding the stick in a previous video. I must have seen it elsewhere.... I moulded mine into my old blue Wilkinson sword soap bowl once it was used it... However I would say. Rubbing the stick right into your face then lathering it up with a brush. Makes your skin feel more slick, when going over it with your razor.. Compared to making lather in a bowl then applying it to your face...... Has anyone else noticed this??

Yes. Face lathering for me is always slicker regardless of the soap I'm using compared to bowl lathering, I just assumed it was faulty technique on my part.

@@toshetraychov1712 Honestly, I never did it, got wrapped up with other soaps. I did use the soap though, shaved a few pieces into a bowl with a pocket knife and it was pretty hard stuff. Pretty good stuff though. Great bang for your buck, it will do a lot of shaves in that little stick. Smells like a pleasant simple bar of soap scent.

Arko is my favorite soap because of how slick and cheap it is. I don't feel guilty of wasting it if I bowl lather too much. I force it into a proraso circular plastic container with my thumbs. Its like pressing down a firm putty. The proraso container is great for a bowl and has a lid too so its great for travel and keeping the Arko clean.

I am sorry, got very exited coz was thinking you did another project I had in mind.😅 This is why commented even before watching the hole video. This is the project i had in mind but forgot to start: "How to make a shaving paste like proraso or a shaving soap like tailor of bond str. Into a tube? In order to travel lighter..." I was thinking of something like a microwave, a plastic pipe cuted in half, maybe shaving oil so it won't stuck in the pipe, something else but I am not a youtuber. Ca you do this? If you can, you would help lots and lots of ppl who travel. Hope tomorrow be a fun video for new year😆

I've done Taylor of Old Bond St's sandalwood soap into one of those deodorant style tubes. It can be done but you need to be committed. My process is as follows: 1. Shred 1 cake of soap into a bowl using a box grater 2. Add 1/4 cup of water to the grated soap and heat in a stainless bowl over boiling water (double boiler). 3. As the mixture heats you'll see it start to melt, use a wood or silicone spatula to move the mixture around so it all melts. 4. Once the mixture becomes a viscous liquid (typically takes me about 20 minutes) pour it into the tube and allow to cool. One cake fills 2 tubes. Note: Do NOT allow this mixture to get to a thin runny stage. It normally damages your tubes. Taylor DOES sell some of their shaving soaps in the tube form. I'm not sure it's the same product as what you get in the cake, it doesn't seem to lather quite as much.

Chop it up. Heat in double boiler for 20 minutes. Add tbsp of castor oil and mix it up. Push into bowl. Blows Proraso out of the water in terms of lather and price. Strong citrus, cleaning spray smell but it doesn’t last more than a few minutes

I just molded my Arko, derby and Palmolive shave sticks to their own bowl by softening in the microwave for 10-15 seconds and then pressing it on to their own bowl with my thumbs. So, they won’t Melt, but they will soften up. Also, I ordered it from shave nation. Kind of weird this video showed up the same time I did the same thing with my order from them 🤔🤷🏽‍♂️

For forty years I have been using omega shaving brushes and now I use OMEGA HI BRUSH because I found it better than natural badger hair and I use PRORAZO AND ARKO shaving stiffeners What is the difference between shaving cream and shaving soap I alone Shaving soap is the best, so what do you think of the brushes that I use and the soap?

Soaps are generally harder than creams, really no huge difference in lather, cushioning, you can get great results from either. Plus there are so many different types of each that it's mind boggling. Proraso is great, made in Italy since around 1926. Arko is cheap and very versatile. Omega boar brushes are also great with many many options to choose from. All great choices.

Jack Man! Happy New Year! Way back it was Porter Cable, then DeWalt, for the past 15 years definitely Milwaukee. Their tools are amazing and they just keep getting better, along with a tremendous selection of products. I just picked up some new Red items last week. I used to spray paint the red power tool cases black so they weren't so noticeable to thieves when I was carting them in and out of high rise buildings and restaurants in Downtown Chicago. Any truck that had Electric Corp on the side was a tasty target. I'm speaking from personal experience...

I knew you had to have a preference Geo! @@BuffaloNickel9 I had to replace my 18V Hammer Drill-it still had the older style lithium batteries which had greatly diminished battery capacity. (maybe 15-20 years old) The new one's an absolute beast! New wire strippers, screwdrivers, and fastback 6in 1 utility knife. All great! Do NOT try and melt Tallow based soaps. They break down to an ugly mess by the time you get them hot enough. Do not go there. Shred tallow soaps and form them.

Doesn't this defeat the purpose of having a stick? I always thought the purpose of a stick is to role down the foil to expose the soap, apply to your face, and lather. Interesting concept, but why the unnecessary complexity?

I think Arko is great and very cheap, but it has a scent that reminds me of the powder you put in a washing machine! The quality of TOBS and Proraso keep me away from it!

Well, judging by the comments, most of them like Arko shaving soap. But for me, Not my cup of tea. Too smelly and waxy. Am I the only one?
