About: Mount Akagi (赤城山, Akagi-yama, Red Castle) is a mountain in Gunma Prefecture, Japan.
See volcanicjapan.com/ for Info, Maps, and Warnings where I have made it easy to access this information.
Volcano No. - E15
Volcano name - Akagi San (Akagi Yama)
Geologic code - Q3m
Main activity period - Chibanian (Middle Pleistocene) - Late Pleistocene
Activity period / recent activity - 0.5-0.03 Ma, Latest eruption - AD 1251?
Volcano type - Composite (compound) volcano - Caldera, Lava dome
Representative rock type - Intermediate
Main rock type - Andesite, Dacite
Height above sea level - 1828 m (Kurobisan)
Record of eruption & disaster - 18 May 1251: Eruptive activity?; 26 Sep 1947: Lahar. Several fatalities. (Note: I researched this a bit more and during the WW2 period the mountain was heavily cleared for timber therefore the reported "lahar" from what I could find in historical records is also said to be the result of deforestation which caused a landslide)
The broad, low dominantly andesitic stratovolcano rises above the northern end of the Kanto Plain. It contains an elliptical, 3 x 4 km summit caldera with post-caldera lava domes arranged along a NW-SE line. Lake Ono is located at the NE end of the caldera. An older stratovolcano was partially destroyed by edifice collapse, producing a debris-avalanche deposit along the south flank. A series of large plinian eruptions accompanied growth of a second stratovolcano during the Pleistocene. Construction of the central cone in the late-Pleistocene summit caldera began following the last of the plinian eruptions about 31,000 years ago. During historical time unusual activity was recorded on several occasions during the 9th century, but reported eruptions in 1251 and 1938 are considered uncertain. (Source: Global Volcanism Program)
Mount Akagi, along with Mount Myōgi and Mount Haruna, is one of the "Three Mountains of Jōmō" (上毛三山), and the cold north winds which blow down from it are called Akagi-oroshi (赤城おろし) or Karakkaze (空っ風). (Source: Wikipedia)
Getting Started: After arriving from about a 2 hour drive coming from Manza Onsen area and after parking in Onuma parking lot, I decided to hike the Mount Kurobi Loop (see AllTrails here for the trail maps) also shown below. The hike I did (the Kurobi loop) is composed of 2 peaks, Kurobi, and Komagatake however the rim and remaining peaks altogether consist of three Mt Kurobi (which is the highest point), Mt Komagatake, and Mt. Jizodake (which is the second highest peak.

Hi @travellerworld8966 I’m learning. Japanese is incredibly difficult language to learn however if I can understand the romanji word, interpret the katakana, then in some cases yes. Of course I find spending more time there and the repetition helps. I can’t speak nor read fluidly though which is also why our goal is to have me over there full time 2 years from now. I do understand or can usually interpret what someone is asking me. My pronunciation needs work. It’s all about being immersed in the culture which is my obvious goal. Thank you for commenting on the video.

@@volcanicjapan Yes. Korean. Japanese and Chinese can be difficult for westerners , because those languages are very different from roman languages. Since I am a Korean, I can read some of Japanese and Chinese words, because they share some chinese characters (called Hanja). Still difficult for me, as well. I agree that learning languate is essential in understanding culture, so good luck to your studying. - - Kevin.

@@travellerworld8966 thank you Kevin. My objective is to spend 80% of my time in my 50’s in-country. I don’t expect I will ever be “fluid” but want to at least be conversational. That goes for Korean as well given the close proximity. 😊
