The Mount Baden-Powell hike packs a lot into a relatively short distance. On your way to the summit of Mt Baden-Powell (9,399 feet), you’ll experience the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) where you can channel your inner Reese Witherspoon, 40 hardcore switchbacks, a monument for Mt Baden-Powell’s namesake, Lord Baden-Powell, they guy who founded the Boy Scouts, a barren saddle with jaw-dropping views, and a 1500-year old limber pine. And at the summit you’ll enjoy sweeping panoramic views of the San Gabriel Mountains. So you got all that going for you if you do the hike. It’s tough but very doable, I highly recommend it.

Great video as always Chris. I actually did the climb the Saturday before you. Two weeks after C2C. Next is Mt. Baldy. I watch your vids several times before I hike the trails. Makes me very comfortable as if I have hiked it before. Thanks!!

Nice nice, glad the vids are helpful, that's exactly why I do them, so good to know. Have fun on Baldy and go as early as possible to avoid the crowds!

We did this hike with Troop 930 from Whittier, California in about 1972. It was tough.

Awesome video again! I love the Baden-Powell/Middle High Country area. TVinmyEye has a great suggestion. It is much more mellow with the crowds until the summit. Also, you get to hit other summits as well. Throop Peak is within a short distance a the junction of the PCT, as is Mt. Burnham along the way!

Yea, good point. I love that. On the day I shot this I talked to a bunch. Spring is a good time to hit the folks heading north.

I absolutely love hiking Mount Baden Powell, however i dont like hiking it from Vincent Gap, i always op to start from Dawson Saddle to Baden Powell, waaay more scenic route than Vicent, and usually a lot less people approaching from that side.

Yea, that's actually my fave too. Will be posting that at some point too. Fun to do the loop if you have two people with a car shuttle too.

Lots of folks camp up there, you'll see flat spots in the summit area used for tents.

kermit1 what time of the year Did you do it?
@kermit1
@kermit1 6 лет назад
olga159 I haven’t done yet or any hike in the angeles national forest, but I would imagine best time to do it would be spring or summer as it snows during colder weather
@Hikingguy
@Hikingguy 6 лет назад
Yup, any time that there's no snow or ice is the move (late spring, summer, fall generally work)

@kermit1

What’s the best way to get here from Long Beach? If I type in the address in google maps it takes me east of the forest, then behind it then going west again. Seems like a long drive if there a direct road to get they the mountains? In google maps there is CA39 listed but shows it’s closed until 2020
@Hikingguy

I generally go 15 > 139 > 2 and up through Mountain High Ski Resort. That way is open now and pretty scenic.

Hi Cris! I appreciate your videos and trail guides. I’m planning a loop hike for the spring: starting at Crystal Lake, up to Baden-Powell, down to Vincent Gap, then the Manzanita trail to South Fork campground and up the South Fork trail to Islip and back to Crystal Lake. The only leg I’m concerned about is from Windy Gap to Vincent Gap. I understand there’s no water for that leg. Does Vincent Gap parking area have water?
@theunlikelyhiker6557
@theunlikelyhiker6557 Год назад
Also, in case we don’t want to do all 18 miles to South Fork on Day 1, are there any spots around Baden-Powell peak to camp? Dry, I know.
@Hikingguy
@Hikingguy Год назад
It's a tough area for water. There's a spring below Mt Hawkins but I'm not sure how reliable it is. Your best bet would be to get the Far Out app / PCT section and see the recent reports for water sources there. No water at Vincent Gap.

Did the hike today, awesome experience, but there was a TON of people. We had to make way for someone literally every 3 minutes.
@Hikingguy
@Hikingguy 3 года назад
Yea, the best bet is to do this early fall, sunrise, on a weekday. Otherwise the crowds are crazy.

HikingGuy.com Yep, we woke up very early but from where I live it is a 2 hour drive and before we left, my backpack started leaking so that delayed our trip.

I'm a 10-year-old and I find this trail as moderate, not difficult. I also did this with my 8-year-old sister and she rates this as moderate too. Can you change this trail's difficulty to moderate on your website?
@Hikingguy
@Hikingguy 3 года назад
Glad you guys were able to conquer this one with ease! Most regular folks would probably find the non-stop 2800 foot climb a little more than moderate. You can read about how I classify the hikes here > hikingguy.com/how-to-read-the-hike-brief/
