Hey, Everyone! Today we going to be checking out the Lost Creek Trail here in Austin TX. You start out on The Hill of Life. It’s really chunky and you have to be aware of hikers; however, there are some wide section where you can really open up. While I prefer to go down the hill, there are people that enjoy the challenge of trying to climb it.
Right off the hill of life is a trail known as “Dump Truck”. You’ll really want to keep your eyes up on this trail, they're a lot of technical sections of singletrack and the trail usually follows alongside a cliff. There’s usually a B-line on the rock features, but even they are pretty dicey when you have 25lbs of camera gear on your back.
About half way up the trail is a clearing with a pretty epic view of the Lost Creek area.
To find out why it’s called Dump Truck, you’ll need to make it over some punchy climbs, try not to fall off the side of the trail, and make it up a few hike-a-bike sections.
No one really knows how this got here, but it’s a pretty cool landmark.
Ok, let’s start heading back. The trail a challenge in both directions, so don’t get overconfident.
I’m burning up in this heat. Let’s head down the hill to a good area to cool off, it also why the locals love this spot so much.
In Austin, the average temperature for July can easily break 100*F in the shade. People come in droves to have fun and cool off. Right now, the water is a bit low, but normally the falls are running with cool, clear water. Not having a waterfall doesn’t stop people, or pets, from making the most of the day.
Ok, the sun is starting to ease up a bit. So, let’s head back up the Hill of Life and explore some trails I haven’t been on yet.
“Oh man, so many good choices! Well… Down is always more fun than up.”
“So, I’ve never been through this trail before. Umm… But God **** I wish I had.”
“Woo!”
“Whoa! Whoa… This is getting a little sketchy… A little twitchy… A little bit steep. Very low margin for error up here.”
“Whoop! Whoa, tight!”
“Holy S***! Whoa!”
“Yeah… You can totally roll this… And then just shoot down here…”
“Woo!”
I never knew these trails were back here. The further I went, the better they got. However, I started to get overconfident. While trying to make it over a feature, what I had planned in my head, and what actually happened, were completely different.
“Fuuuuugh!”
“AAAAUgh! Ok… Ok…”
"Ok… Alright, that looks good.”
I managed not to break myself, but the trail did take it share.
“Aw man….”
“That’s gonna hurt to watch…”
After knee dropping a pile of rocks I decided it was time to pack up.
“Ok, So… I’m going to call it a day after that…”

Wow. What a great video. The new camera takes some incredible footage. I literally let out an audible "Ohhh" when you replayed the slow motion footage of your crash. That's why I wear pads, but I also don't have to compete with the Texas sun.
@TrailFeatures
@TrailFeatures 7 лет назад
Dude... After that spill, I'm going to reconsider pads. I have some that are great protection but are way too warm. May have to look into those new G-form pads that are getting a lot of press.
@rtierney123
@rtierney123 7 лет назад
I ride GForm pads in Austin, and they've saved me on the greenbelt many times...
@TrailFeatures
@TrailFeatures 7 лет назад
+RMT123 nice! How are they in the heat?
@rtierney123
@rtierney123 7 лет назад
I picked them up specifically because they were supposed to be the best in the heat, and I've been happy with them. They're hotter than not having them on, but I rode out at Pace Bend this Weekend with them on, and it was for sure doable. I've taken crashes in the GB which destroyed the pads and would have torn my knee/elbow apart, so I'm glad I have them, especially for the GB.

This is great! Yeah I'm hoping I can do this on an XC bike. I know I should have a trail or downhill bike, but I like to underbike. Did most of the bcgb on a rigid gravel bike, so I'm hoping that going to an XC MTB will allow me to (eventually) ride stuff like this. It will be good to push my limits.

The a6500 is a great camera, but you have to be aware it'll overheat while recording 4k. It's not that crippling of an issues, but something you should consider while shopping. I personally like Panasonic's line of cameras, but they have their own set of drawbacks.

if you go to canyon lake park off the main road (brookshire brothers at the redlight) that runs down to the camp sites, theres a small parking lot about .5 mi down. The trail head has a large wood map and the entrance is right there. Great trail, about 8-9 miles long.

You know whats funny? about 20ft before that feature I also dumped the bike and was able to do just that. Should have taken that as my sign to call it, but I was feeling pumped on the discovery and wanted to keep pushing. Lesson learned: After two hours of riding in 100* heat with 25lbs on your back, you're more tired than you think...Also, you're probably not thinking... So best to stop while you're ahead. :/

I quit riding the Barton Creek trails because they are so stony it just isn't that fun. I like technical in the mid range but not being beaten up for hours on end. Honestly, it's a lot like riding the Porcupine Rim trails only harder. Next time you visit Austin, check out the Brushy Creek Regional Trail. There are well developed singletrack sections along the creek, and more technical sections up the hill with a wide variety of features.

Brushy Creek is awesome! I love riding there. I agree that the green belt can get too abusive to ride every day, I like to take brakes from it and go ride Slaughter Creek or Walnut.

Get a full suspension bike.. the challenges of rocks and other technical chatter can be a blast. Much more exhilarating than just cruising around on smooth stuff all the time.

Funny enough... I'm planning on building up a rock eating hardtail this fall. Miss having a bombproof set of wheels the throw around on the trails. 😀

Up until about 3 or 4 years ago that would make all the sense in the world but nowadays, if you have about 4 or 5K to spend, you can put together a 25 pound, do-all, full suspension trail bike with big fat tires and excellent pedaling efficiency for sprints n' climbs n such ... Hardtails on technical trails are for masochists or at least, people on a budget.
