It's a beautiful place I have family there and lived in the area. There are good and bad people everywhere. It doesn't make a town a bad place to live for the negative comments below. I get there are bad elements everywhere, but you can't get this beautiful fresh air and mountain scenery everywhere so just appreciate the beauty and the good people of this town.
This video is quite old and there have been changes for Mountain City and Johnson County. We have it all y'all! Come share the magic of the mountains for hiking, biking, ATVing, and Watauga Lake for fishing, swimming, boating. If you like the Outdoors....you'll love Johnson County
Wow! Remember driving through here in the 70's on my way to Grandfather Mountain. I remember well the older part of town. Nice down home feel there. Hope to revisit.
Okay, I'm sorry, but I see these mean comments and I can't help but say my part. The only reason there are bad people in mountain city is because they are too ignorant to follow laws set by our government. It isn't our fault they choose to live here. I have lived in this town my whole life, and I am currently finishing my last year of high school at the school you saw in this very video. Anyone and everyone looking for a small town to live in, this is the place to go. They're right in the middle of some great attractions. Tweetsie Railroad, Watauga Lake, a Ski Resort, Bristol Motor Speedway, two airports (possibly more), three colleges, all within 2 hours from here. It's an amazing town. The people are easy to get along with, but there are those select few that are pretty bad people. Every town has that kind of people. I highly recommend M.C. for anyone looking for somewhere beautiful to stay, and somewhere with good food, and great people. I am truly happy I got to grow up here.
The town looks nice at first then you get there and you realize you have a chance of getting aids breathing in the air this place is beautiful but the people are far from it.
The "Clinic" is our hospital and doctors offices. the "good place to eat" between Pizza Plus and the Mountain Empire Motel is closed, falling apart and for sale. The place "where they do something to Christmas trees" is a seasonal business that makes fresh Christmas wreaths and Mexicans are sent in to do the work..no local jobs!! "the back way out of town" is South Church Street and one of the main roads in the Downtown area. "Old Mountain City" sits on West Main Street. Now it is filled with junk "antique" shops and lawyers offices (some folks here spend a lot of time and money in court.) My Father grew up in this town back in the 30's and 40's ...I did in the 60's. Ain't the great place it used to be but it is home.
You started on hwy 421/Shady Street. that was our hospital. that restaurant is closed now. that Christmas wreath place id for mostly migrant workers. You turned onto Church Street/hwy 91. Te traffic light is on Church and Main Street. To the left is west main/hwy 67 (Law offices/courthouse/gas station/churches/junk shops/furniture store/banks/ pharmacy/restaurants/funeral home/optician/intersects with hwy 421) and to the right is East Main (grocery store/junk shop/radio station/child car/farm supply) You then travel on North Church Street some more. You pass the library on the left and county offices/live theater/senior center/art center/post office behind it. The houses were mostly built in the early 1900's. The large brick home on the left has an historical marker (Butler Home). the high school/middle school are seen on the hill to the right. If you continue on this road (hwy 91 north) you come to the city limits then beyond that Laurel Bloomery community then Damascus, VA.
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. John 3:16-17
