The Pine Valley Mountain Range, located within the Dixie National Forest, is a stunning landscape that is home to a variety of plant and animal species. But with the increasing risk of wildfires, it has become necessary to find ways to protect this natural wonder. One potential solution? Cattle grazing.
Cattle grazing has long been used as a method of managing vegetation in national forests, and it has been shown to reduce the risk of wildfires. By keeping the vegetation short and reducing the amount of dry brush, cattle can prevent wildfires from starting or spreading. And in the Pine Valley Mountain Range, where wildfires can have devastating effects on the local ecosystem, cattle grazing could be a game-changer.
But it's not just the reduction in wildfire risk that makes cattle grazing a valuable tool in the management of the Pine Valley Mountain Range. Cattle grazing also has a number of other benefits, both for the environment and for local ranchers.
First and foremost, cattle grazing is a sustainable and natural method of managing vegetation. Unlike chemical treatments or mechanical mowing, which can have negative effects on the ecosystem, cattle grazing allows for the natural cycling of nutrients and the maintenance of soil health. The cows also trample the ground, which helps to create a natural seedbed for new growth.
Additionally, cattle grazing can help to promote biodiversity in the area. By keeping the vegetation short, the cows create more open spaces where a wider variety of plant species can grow. This, in turn, attracts a greater variety of insects, birds, and other wildlife.
But it's not just the environment that benefits from cattle grazing in the Pine Valley Mountain Range. Local ranchers can also benefit from this practice. Grazing permits on public lands can provide an additional source of income for ranchers, while also allowing them to expand their herds and provide more meat for consumers. And because the cattle are free-range, they tend to be healthier and have a better flavor than those raised in feedlots.
Of course, there are some concerns about cattle grazing in national forests. Some worry that the cows will damage the ecosystem or that they will be at risk from predators or other dangers. However, with proper management practices in place, these concerns can be addressed and mitigated.
For example, ranchers can work with forest managers to determine the appropriate grazing areas and schedules. They can also use temporary fencing or herding dogs to keep the cows in designated areas and protect them from predators. And by rotating the grazing areas, the vegetation has a chance to recover and wildlife has access to other areas of the forest.
In conclusion, the Pine Valley Mountain Range in the Dixie National Forest is a precious ecosystem that deserves protection from the risk of wildfires. And one potential solution to this problem is cattle grazing. Not only does this practice reduce the risk of wildfires, but it also has a number of other benefits for the environment and local ranchers. With proper management practices in place, cattle grazing could be a sustainable and effective way to manage the vegetation in this beautiful mountain range.

Argh.... I really didn't think that Jake was going to get out of that as well as he did - good calm thinking always helps tremendously - kudos to the kids (young men of the mountain arent they!!!) for not freaking out, and Jake too. I love that Rambo just stuck with him too, like 'Its ok buddy, we gotchya' LOL We used to do some mountain riding in the edges of the Wollemi National Park that werent the park but still on the private property. Gorgeous scenery - very much like what you rode through, and if you have seen The Man From Snowy River - that kind of scenery. I've ridden similar country prior to that too - and have found the best thing going up and down the rocky areas and almost vertical bits has been to get off and just tail them up and down - if, and I mean IF you trust your horse not to boot you. Grab one tail and let them help you climb/descend and use it as a rudder to direct them. Same as when on really narrow ledges - walk and either lead or tail - let them pick their path and footing - they dont need humans to stuff with their balance. Great video - much better than a few days in school - MUCH better. The school of life. It doesnt hurt every now and then! Great Dad!!!!!! Love your work :D :D :D

New member here! I'm a 5th generation Clearwater Fl. native and I have to say that the only place I've seen anything remotely similar to this roundup video was on "Bonanza". 😆 Sure we have world class fishing, but WOW! I'm impressed! I've never even rode a horse! That roundup is some tough stuff, and the terrain is just brutal! I had no idea that cattle and your horses could negotiate that type of terrain! And Big Jake! He was literally "stuck between a rock and a hard spot". He and yourself handled it like some tough hombre's! No panic from either, and I know he was in some pain! One more thing, those boys of yours became men when it was time for that roundup! They command respect from the animals just like a man! Keep up the great work on the ranch and raising them boys. I can't see them ever running with the wrong crowd. It's so obvious that you and their mother are raising them right!

I’ve backpacked out West in rough terrain like that, and have done some short trail rides in AZ and MT with some steep terrain, but that was some badass terrain for riding.)
