We took a quick trip down to the mountains of northern Georgia to visit a place outside of our busy city life for the weekend. Kennedy Creek resort is about 1.5 hour drive north of Atlanta, and about an 1 hour and 15 min flight from Nashville, TN. Kennedy Creek is a great get-away and offers some great amenities at a very reasonable price. The bar and restaurant... suprisingly excellent! Kennedy Creek Resort offers many cabins to choose from, as well RV sites, yurts (a permanent tent with a bed and power outlets), tents, and campsites. Everything you need to make a great getaway trip is at your disposal. For us, the fact that they have a decent runway and it's quick hop from Nashville, made it a pretty easy choice for a get-away weekend.
The trip started pretty uneventful, but along the way, the haze from the Canadian fires started to get me worried. The thought crossed my mind that we might end up diverting to a nearby airport that offered runway lights and then drive up to Kennedy Creek if needed. The visibility was better as we crossed over the other side of the higher mountains and descended in to the Suches, Georgia area.
The site was beautiful, and the scenery made it instantly relaxing and peaceful. The camp sites and cabins were full, the people were so friendly and the staff was very nice, and accommodating. We will be back, but next time I will choose to make the trip after the haze resides from the Canadian fires.

So nice that you post these videos so that others can travel vicariously. Really enjoy just the instrumentation background, rather than a bunch over voice-overs. It allows you to just take in the experience.

Tom, that is exactly what I was aiming for when editing these video. I have had a lot of comments asking for "talking, and details", as in pilot training, information on the airplane, and trip, etc... But all that information people can get easily online. The experience, the visuals, and the ride along is the unique part of these videos... and for me, that was the goal in this project. I appreciate you getting it! However, I think I may start including some limited "talking" if it helps tell the story. I started doing that in the newest video, "AirVenture 2023, The Journey to Oshkosh". Thanks for the comment Tom.

Great trip!! Did the cottage have AC? What was for breakfast?

The little cabin did have A/C. The Sunday morning was Fathers Day, so the cook just made breakfast to order instead of the buffet. I had scrambled eggs, sausage, grits. It was excellent. It was a great trip. We will do it again. Thanks for the comment!

As for the smoke, we Canadians tried to send your lumber but it was taxed so high, we elected to send it in aerosol form. 🙂

Haha, yes of course. I was surprised how many months the haze lasted in my area. Glad it is gone now.

What was the condition of the runway?
@lightsportpilotadventures
@lightsportpilotadventures Год назад
The runway was smooth grass, i did not notice any holes or bumps, except slightly near the turn off, very minor. However, my plane is very slippery and doesnt like to slow down even in full flaps, so the trees on the south end of the runway make the 2000ft less usable since it forces a displaced threshold for me. next time ill be slower over the trees if i enter from the south. From the north side is not so bad, however, there are also roads on each end of the runway, so wanna be 25ft above each end on approach to be sure you don't nail a car or truck on those roads. For a STOL or low wing loading high wing like a cub or bushcat, no problem. For a Cherokee,or a 172, the pilot better be on their A game and the weather better be great. Also it is at 3000ft. Density altitude at the time I took off was about 4400ft. I was getting 500-600 fpm climb when I usually get 1000 fpm. It also says land at your own risk... since it is a private strip. Would love to hear your comments if you decide to land there.

@@lightsportpilotadventures Which brings up another question, where does one find performance data for the Sting? Only see basic data in their manual.
@lightsportpilotadventures
@lightsportpilotadventures Год назад
@@JayMcGowan The Sting S3 and the newer S4 basically have the same performance data. The rudder on the S3 is a little larger and gives more control authority. The S4 sits slightly higher on the main gear legs, so the tail sits higher, just for looks. Most Stings have the 912ULS, but some of the newer ones have the 912iS. The 914 is also suitable for the plane, but in the US it would need to be experimental for the Horse Power and Constant Speed Prop. What would you like to know?
@JayMcGowan
@JayMcGowan Год назад
@@lightsportpilotadventures I was looking for performance data relative to weight/density altitude runway required for takeoff and landing. Also cruise performance and burn at altitude. I am used to the Cessna charts so looking for something similar for the Sting.
@lightsportpilotadventures
@lightsportpilotadventures Год назад
@@JayMcGowan I understand. The POH has some information. Link is in the next reply. As far as I know, there is not charts like a Cessna 172 has, that give you performance tables with weight/load and density altitude. However, when flying mine, I have made mental notes of what kind of climb rates and takeoff distances I get when Crystal and I are in the plane at different altitudes. With max gross, the plane will climb at full power over 1000ft/min at sea level on standard day. At 8500 ft, the same conditions will climb at 150-200 ft/min, worse case up to 10,500, then the carburetors start showing the lack of luster above that. Not recommended to fly max gross above 11,500 in this plane unless you have a 914 turbo in it. I have 200+ hours in it, and know what it will do in most conditions with both Crystal and I in the plane. 95 percent of the time Crystal is with me. Her, I, Cameras, and 27 gallons of gas is max gross. The times I fly by myself, holy crap does it climb! Just me and a half tank of gas, I can roll and be off the ground from dead stop in 300 ft, and climb over 1300+ ft/min. Crazy fun. The take off from Kennedy Creek, I knew I would be in the air before half way (1000ft of the 2000ft) runway, and then climb at around 400-500 ft/min worse case. That's 100ft AGL in 10 seconds which would clear the trees off the end of the runway easily. The density alt was 3400 ft or so when I took off. I did not climb at Vy, I chose to stay low and build speed first before climbing out. If I had pulled up and stayed in Vy, 50kn, like the manual says, I would have climbed even faster. tewpilots@gmail.com. Glad to talk.

You are a brave man … I would not take my Sting to a grass strip …. I love smooth evening summer flights but it is pain enough to clean it as it is , let alone dealing with wet grass :-)
@lightsportpilotadventures
@lightsportpilotadventures Год назад
Haha, yes cleaning a Sting is a never ending task, especially with all the bugs in Tennessee in the evening. Any cross country gets a bug smear across the windows and leading edges. And yes, I prefer a hard surface runway, but the Sting was designed to handle grass strips and it really does well. The Europeans love their grass strips! I watch this guy on youtube called Short Field , a cool British guy flying to all the farm strips around his area. pretty cool. I also am a subscriber for you bro! My last video at Gastons in Arkansas was really fun and really nice grass runway. This one at Kennedy Creek was probably the limit of what i would try on a perfect day for landing there in my S3! Thanks for commenting. You and I are not so far apart. It Would be fun to meet up sometime with you and maybe do some aerial video of our Stings together in the air! Cheers!
