Light Sport Pilot Adventures is a vlog dedicated to the fun that you can have flying small two seat LSA airplanes. Crystal and Rob started taking private pilot lessons together, later in life, after their kids had grown. Quickly they purchased a 2009 TL Sting S3, and the adventures have begun!

Their plan is to visit EVERYTHING within flying distance of Nashville, TN, which is home base. Their first adventure, flying down the Gulf side and then up the Atlantic side of Florida/ Eventually they will fly to "First Flight" in Virginia, to Maine, across Niagara and the Great Lakes, visiting Osh-Kosh, and then west over the Rockies to Washington. Eventually there will be a Caribbean, Central American, and a Canadian adventure at some point!

Come along for the ride and experience the adventure with us!

We have plans to fly the Great Lakes over to Niagara Falls this year. Probably further since Crystal says she wants some real Clam Chowder, haha! Where are you guys based? Maybe we can meet up for lunch, or even better, do some formation flying and get video of each others plane in the air. That would be cool. SportCruisers are very similar to our Sting. It would be fun to see the differences in person. Thanks for the nice comment! Cheers! gmail: tewpilots@...com

Why did you fly backwards to shorten the eclipse?
@lightsportpilotadventures
@lightsportpilotadventures Месяц назад
We decided to reverse course because the sun was not visible. It was behind us. We wanted to see the sun. We say that at 17:41. Glad we did, it was awesome to see. Thanks for watching and for commenting!
@bradtem
@bradtem Месяц назад
@@lightsportpilotadventures Seeing the sun is a pretty good excuse! While a LSA isn't that fast, jet based eclipse flights can increase duration a fair bit and will pick a vector that still allows seeing the sun and is as close to the travel vector as possible -- and also trying to bank when the eclipse is at high altitude. Of course, some of them also give up this and reverse course to give a view to those on both sides of the aircraft. There are eclipse timing phone apps that can handle flight plans to make their predictions. Few have a transparent roof as you do.
@lightsportpilotadventures
@lightsportpilotadventures Месяц назад
@bradtem yes, jets are faster but our canopy is 360 degrees completely open sky. I actually slowed down as much as possible to get it to last longer. Maybe saved a few seconds either ways haha. But, you are correct we did loose a few seconds by heading it to. : )

Mind-bending awesome. Thank you for sharing. Now flying the S4 but sadly, nowhere near the ubra. Just have to enjoy the sight vicariously. Three questions: 1/ What fuel do you normally burn (assume that is a 912 ULS). 2/ What happened to the underwing camera footage (I was thinking about mounting one there on the tie-down)? 3/ Would it be practical to mount a camera on the tail tie-down or is it just too close to the ground? Best days are flying days. Stay safe.

Thanks for the positive comment! You are flying an S4 now? Awesome! Which year model, engine, etc... That's very cool. I can only run 93 Premium Auto gas when I am at my home airport John Tune (KJWN). I have (four) 5 gallon gas cans that I keep in the trunk when I fly. All of them can fill the main tank. If I am on a cross country, then I user AvGas. Really, no choice... and therefore I change the oil every 25 hours, so to limit the lead buildup in the oil. I can tell when it gets sludgy. I made a GoPro mount for the wing tie down rings using a metal GoPro mount off amazon, modified with some washers and wing nuts. I'll send you a pic if you like. Easy to make. Cheers!

@@lightsportpilotadventures Hi, A 2016 TL-2000 Sting S4 with the 912 ULS. It has a single Garmin G3X and ADS-B out. Good for day VFR which is exactly my personal mission profile after 28,000 hours of airline flying. There are two places relatively closeby that sell unleaded high octane fuel at the airport. One is a 10 minute flight away into a very short and fun field, the other just under an hour (CAM3 and CAH3). My aircraft is based in CYYJ. The main problem is finding ethanol free fuel though ROTAX has indicated it is OK with up to 10%. I have not had a reply from TL Ultralight if they approve of ethanol in their fuel system. This is a "rescue" aircraft as it was abandoned in Ft. Lauderdale during COVID. The owner was given 2 hour notice to get on an emergency evac flight to Canada and left the aircraft outside for what he thought would be 3 months but ended up being almost two year. Had to trailer it back to Canada and replace the control wires, control hinges, instruments, external lights, engine wiring and hoses, and the pneumatic tubes (into backup altimeter and Garmin system). It is mechanically sound and I flew it from Midland, Ontario (CYEE) through the USA (around the south of Lake Michigan) to Victoria. I was able to find unleaded fuel up to Montana where I had to use 100LL for the remainder of the trip. Now dealing with cosmetics. The canopy and rear window will need to be replaced and the BRS refurbished. The panel warped with the heat and it may be a challenge to correct and recover. However, that will have to wait until the fall as flying weather is here. Your videos are really amazing and provide a high degree of motivation to "get out there"! Please send a picture of your camera mounting. I am considering an Insta 360 would work well outside. I currently have one mounted inside but the over the nose view is quite obscured by the cowling. Hoping to get videos to share with my groundschool students (part-time groundschool instructor) highlighting local procedures, communications, etc. Thanks for sharing your experience and please thank your "production manager". @@JayMcGowan Congratulations on your new rescue S4! Very cool airplane, would love to see some pictures of the plane and all of the work done. I had some wind damage on my rudder last spring, as it is parked outside...no hangers in Nashville. So, my rudder and cables, and all control horns and hinges were replaced to remove damaged parts and to get the rudder aligned with the front wheel again. So the main issue with using ethanol fuel is the alcohol content in the fuel will "soften" the interior of the fiberglass resin in the fuel tank. It's not an issue with the engine or hoses I am pretty sure. I would advise you to avoid any ethanol fuel if at all possible. The fuel tank is the structural "body of the plane underneath your feet. See "Sting Flight" RU-vid channel. Richard DeHaven had to fix that issue on his Sting Sport, and documented the repair online and in the RU-vid video. AvGas is safe as long as you change the oil at 25 hrs instead of 50 hrs. Nice that you rescued a Sting s4! The journey back to flight would be an interesting story tell. TL Planes are pretty resilient, and also great is that new parts are attainable from TL. They are pretty good about parts, other than the shipping from Chec Republic. A Canopy and rear window will be pretty expensive. Is it that damaged? My Plane is Sting S3 2009, has 1300 hours. Our planes have the exact same wing. Yours has a nicer canopy and interior design and a smaller rudder. Mine, Still flies great, but has had many thousands of landings, I am sure some not so great, haha. I am electing to replace the entire nose gear assembly and linkage for slop in the steering resulting in shimmy. Could also have been caused with the rudder damage. Gear leg and hardware is sitting in my garage ready to install. I could list all of the things I have done to this place in the 2 years I have owned it. New exhaust system, new Rotax reduction gear, rudder repair, strobes, new tires twice, new brake tubing, calipers, pads and rotors. They were original and needed renewed. Minor issues with avionics.(flakey screens) Hoping once all of the worn original parts are cycled out, it will be solid for a while. Also not required but I did it anyway, new seat and interior upholstery. Much more comfortable and styling now haha. You can see the new seats in the Eclipse Video. : ) Let's stay in touch. I used two wingnuts facing opposite on the same bolt with large washers in between. Tighten it down very tight with your hands and it stays on great. Recommend not using GoPro 11 mini, as the battery can not be swapped. The 360 cam would be awesome, but in that case, I would have an A&P add two hard mounts to the end of the wing that could hold a carbon fiber boom, and have the 360cam on the end of the boom. Trent Palmer style.
@lightsportpilotadventures
@lightsportpilotadventures Месяц назад
By the way, the underwing camera on the tie down for the Eclipse video, I experimented and pushed the boom forward instead of straight down as far away from and below the wing as possible. It ended up with too much "wing" in the top of the shot. I will be going back to original mount position. You could use the same system to go on the rear tail tie down ring, but My plane is always dirty on the bottom of the plane haha, and the shot looks bad to me. You could aim the camera down or backwards. Maybe I will try it. I have also experimented with cameras on the foot steps, but same issue, the bottom of the plane is always dirty. Haha, I love talking about airplane and videography.... sorry for the novel.

How many gallons of fuel will your plane hold ? And how many hours of flying can you do without stopping to fuel up ? Thank you chuck and Tammie B
@lightsportpilotadventures
@lightsportpilotadventures 5 месяцев назад
Hi Chuck and Tammy! A TL Sting will hold 32 gallons. 20 in the main tank and 6 in each wing. Cruising at 120kn at 5300 RPM, will burn 5.5 gallons per hour. With day reserve of 30 min, you can fly very safely for 4.5 hours. Which will yield about 530 or so miles depending on the wind direction. However, I like 2 -3 hour hops, better for my bladder, haha! Economy cruise....better mileage, If you slow the RPM to 5000, your cruise is about 105kn at 4.8gph get you closer to 700 miles... These numbers are around max gross weight. Lighten it up, it just gets better.

@lightsportpilotadventures
@lightsportpilotadventures 5 месяцев назад
Thanks for the comment Derek. Appreciate it. There are a lot of reasons we chose the Sting over some of the others. I have been watching this channel called "Sting Flight" (www.youtube.com/@StingFlight) for over 11 years, and was amazed what he was doing with his Sting. This guy Richard DeHaven posted a lot about maintenance and flying in his Sting. Then after reseaching a lot of planes, TL is one of the few that allows a pilot/owner to work on a lot of this on their own. And the POH (Pilot Operating Handbook) is what the FAA says a pilot/owner is allowed to do, so..... So far, I always changed my own oil, have completely renewed my brake system, new rotors, calipers, pads, and master cylinders, replaced tires, and have updated the seat covers in our Sting. Most manufactururers won't even let you change your oil, so TL is really cool in that regard. Also, I tend to like low wing planes since they are a little more "unstable", in the good ways, that make them more fun to fly. Low wings usually have a stick, like a fighter plane. High wing almost always has a yoke. Better for people with "large legs". In a high wing plane, the CG is like a pendulum that if you let go, will stabilize on its own, so they slower in movements, in contrast, a low wing plane, usually more, touchy, nimble and more sensitive on the stick , which I like better personally. Like you said, a high wing plane is definitely easier to get in, and as I get older, I will likely put a higher value on that. I could go on and on about reasons I liked the Sting, in particular, later version of the older, Sting S3. High glide ratio, conservative Max Load, GRS Whole Parachute, Avionics with Auto Pilot, Real Time Weather, Rotax reliability and 5GPH 120kn level cruise, cruise speed is vital for our mission... etc. Every person has a "mission" for their plane. Think about your mission, and it will help you choose the best plane for you. Cheers!
@derekbertz2832
@derekbertz2832 5 месяцев назад
Thanks for the reply! As I research further the TL aircraft seem to be a tremendous value if I'm being honest. So far our "mission" criteria include cruise speed, comfort, visibility, safety, and useful load. Both the Sting and Sparker are fine examples. Obviously I could pick your brain for hours but I won't 😆. If you're ever near Lake of the Ozarks in south central Missouri let us know!

@derekbertz2832 - Yes, the newer TL's are really made well, awesome airplanes, but they are pricy. You can find S4's used for around 120k well equipped. (Trade-a-plane.com). Sparkers are too new to find used ones, but that may be my next plane. 175kn cruise pretty amazing. Right now, N234YP as at "SportAir" in Little Rock, Arkansas getting some maintenance done. Maybe I when we go pick him up, we can swing up that way. Let me know if I can help on your journey to becoming a pilot.

@charleslewis564 Cool. I was 53 when I got my license. It was only possible when the kids were grown and out of the house for me to afford it. Here is my 2 cents. Everything about being pilot is about mitigating risk of getting hurt. Choose a plane that has good climb and a good glide ratio. That limits some of the amount of time in the danger zone. Watch Dan Gryder- Probable Cause. Despite "some people" not liking his tactics, he is right in his way of trying to keep pilots safe. Don't skimp on maintenance of the plane you fly. It is money well spent. Choose good days over questionable days for weather in flying. Be conservative in your personal minimums until you know what you are comfortably capable of as a pilot. Everyone is different. Most of all, make smart choices, as it is YOUR choices that will keep you and your passengers safe. Let me know if I can help in any way! Cheers!

Hey, I must have missed this comment. I am sure that my baggage boxes behind the seats are the same in your sting s3. Crystal has found that the key to getting a lot of light stuff in there, is to use multiple thin fabric bags like gym bags, so that they can conform to the shape of whatever space is left. Cool! Glad you like the videos! Wouldn't it be fun to fly together and shoot video from each of our planes!

Thank you so much. I do watch Short field too. I hopping to meet him in the next couple months. his channel is a very honest and helpful guid into our UK farm strips. it is a lovely channel. The flying community is quite small in the uk so every one kind of gets to hear about very one else at each years events and you start to bump into pilots you know at random airfields or farm strips. It is lovely and i do love the challenges they present when landing or taking off from them. Thank you for the kind comments and your cool videos. Your country look beautiful to fly and so Vast. The UK is small, but fun to fly.

Tom, that is exactly what I was aiming for when editing these video. I have had a lot of comments asking for "talking, and details", as in pilot training, information on the airplane, and trip, etc... But all that information people can get easily online. The experience, the visuals, and the ride along is the unique part of these videos... and for me, that was the goal in this project. I appreciate you getting it! However, I think I may start including some limited "talking" if it helps tell the story. I started doing that in the newest video, "AirVenture 2023, The Journey to Oshkosh". Thanks for the comment Tom.

I've tried to fly up there once and watched a 182 barely make it over the trees on the north end of the runway. He had been up there the month before and wasn't sure what happened. Like you I touched down at the halfway point when I tried to land in a 172 with a 180 STC engine and I decided to go around and landed at the Lumpkin county airport 8 miles away. It would be interesting to hear what you're thinking when you were landing and taking off. I'm going to try to go up there again today and hopefully this time stay a bit if I can get it on the ground.@@lightsportpilotadventures

@lightsportpilotadventures 9 месяцев назад
Hi, The baggage cubby's behind the seats are pretty large and hold 20lbs each. They were 37lbs total, less the camera gear, which was on the back deck. I cruise at 5250 rpm most flights, gets 5.5 gph at 120kn (140mph) no wind. I don't push it hard, it will go faster, level cruise will push 5500rpm at close to 6gp, but its not worth it in the long run to me. Its a great flying airplane. The way back from AirVenture we had a full tail wind of 28kn that made up for the headwind going there. I was getting 155kn ground speed at 9500ft 5.5 gph.

@lightsportpilotadventures 9 месяцев назад
@@rhealy12 Congratulations on your NEW STING SPORT! That is awesome! What is your tail number, and where are you located. Maybe we can get together sometime! Crystal has spent considerable time finding light weight items for camping, very low weight sleeping backs and air pillows, and mattress pad.. etc. Camping can be done pretty well for two average sized people. Not so much if you are planning on traveling with 2 200+ lbs people obviously. So in our Sting S3, the useful load is 540lbs. 340lbs Crystal and I together 18lbs Stuff behind Right Seat 19lbs Stuff behind Left Seat 16lbs Camera Bag Back Deck ________ 393 lbs Total (Less Fuel) 540 - 393 leave 147lbs for Fuel 147 lbs / 6 lbs per gallon = 24.5 gallons For me that is 3 or so hours in the air, because I NEVER let the plane go below 6 gallons in the main tank when flying. That is just me. About 2 hours is usually our hop time since one of us will have go, haha. We filled the Main tank (21 gallons) and 2 gallons in each wing. We were really close to max gross weight. The plane climbs slower the heavier it is. But is still flies fine at max gross. All of your published speeds are at max gross. Things to note: Planes fly SO much better when there the is less load. Flying by myself is the best flying experience, as I can climb 1400+ feet/min and glide a long ways. The plane flies fine with load, but you will find the more you put in the storage bins, the more tail heavy the plane is. I do not like trimming too far nose down in level flight. I have to factor that in the re-trimming when landing. Also note, as the fuel is used, this plane also becomes more and more tail heavy since the main tank is in front of the CG. Flying faster with higher load is safer in all planes. With this plane the publish approach speed is 70 kn, and 55kn over the numbers, which is well above stall. Then, let the plane slow down in ground effect before touch down. Those numbers will be safe in this plane with all loads and those are the published speeds for a reason. Safe travels and don't be a stranger! Thanks for commenting!

Wonderful video. You set a good example cleaning the leading edges and surfaces of the aircraft right after landing. May I ask what is your preferred cleaning solution for the fuselage and canopy?
@lightsportpilotadventures
@lightsportpilotadventures 9 месяцев назад
Hi Jay, so in the summers here in TN and in the SouthEast where we normally fly, the bugs get pretty bad especially if you fly at dusk or night. I like this stuff: you can buy it on Amazon. It is a glass cleaner in a spray can called "Sprayway Glass Cleaner". We use it on the Canopy and the plane. I like it because it stays in the same place while it is wet. It seems to soften the bugs up, if you let it sit, and then it wipes off without any mess it drips. Crystal usually brings a microfiber cloth to wipe it off, and does the window before the plane. I am sure everyone has a different opinion and will give you a different answer. Our canopy is plexiglass and the plane is completely carbon fiber, that has a smooth white coating, the manufacturer say it is not a "gel coat" like fiberglass boats have, and it seems to very very durable. Very hard to scratch it. I have yet to have our plane get a good wax coat and polish, but I know it is coming soon. Right now it is at its annual inspection in Charleston, South Carolina. Ready to be flying again. Cheers!

What was the condition of the runway?
@lightsportpilotadventures
@lightsportpilotadventures 11 месяцев назад
The runway was smooth grass, i did not notice any holes or bumps, except slightly near the turn off, very minor. However, my plane is very slippery and doesnt like to slow down even in full flaps, so the trees on the south end of the runway make the 2000ft less usable since it forces a displaced threshold for me. next time ill be slower over the trees if i enter from the south. From the north side is not so bad, however, there are also roads on each end of the runway, so wanna be 25ft above each end on approach to be sure you don't nail a car or truck on those roads. For a STOL or low wing loading high wing like a cub or bushcat, no problem. For a Cherokee,or a 172, the pilot better be on their A game and the weather better be great. Also it is at 3000ft. Density altitude at the time I took off was about 4400ft. I was getting 500-600 fpm climb when I usually get 1000 fpm. It also says land at your own risk... since it is a private strip. Would love to hear your comments if you decide to land there.

@@lightsportpilotadventures Which brings up another question, where does one find performance data for the Sting? Only see basic data in their manual.
@lightsportpilotadventures
@lightsportpilotadventures 9 месяцев назад
@@JayMcGowan The Sting S3 and the newer S4 basically have the same performance data. The rudder on the S3 is a little larger and gives more control authority. The S4 sits slightly higher on the main gear legs, so the tail sits higher, just for looks. Most Stings have the 912ULS, but some of the newer ones have the 912iS. The 914 is also suitable for the plane, but in the US it would need to be experimental for the Horse Power and Constant Speed Prop. What would you like to know?
@JayMcGowan
@JayMcGowan 9 месяцев назад
@@lightsportpilotadventures I was looking for performance data relative to weight/density altitude runway required for takeoff and landing. Also cruise performance and burn at altitude. I am used to the Cessna charts so looking for something similar for the Sting.
@lightsportpilotadventures
@lightsportpilotadventures 9 месяцев назад
@@JayMcGowan I understand. The POH has some information. Link is in the next reply. As far as I know, there is not charts like a Cessna 172 has, that give you performance tables with weight/load and density altitude. However, when flying mine, I have made mental notes of what kind of climb rates and takeoff distances I get when Crystal and I are in the plane at different altitudes. With max gross, the plane will climb at full power over 1000ft/min at sea level on standard day. At 8500 ft, the same conditions will climb at 150-200 ft/min, worse case up to 10,500, then the carburetors start showing the lack of luster above that. Not recommended to fly max gross above 11,500 in this plane unless you have a 914 turbo in it. I have 200+ hours in it, and know what it will do in most conditions with both Crystal and I in the plane. 95 percent of the time Crystal is with me. Her, I, Cameras, and 27 gallons of gas is max gross. The times I fly by myself, holy crap does it climb! Just me and a half tank of gas, I can roll and be off the ground from dead stop in 300 ft, and climb over 1300+ ft/min. Crazy fun. The take off from Kennedy Creek, I knew I would be in the air before half way (1000ft of the 2000ft) runway, and then climb at around 400-500 ft/min worse case. That's 100ft AGL in 10 seconds which would clear the trees off the end of the runway easily. The density alt was 3400 ft or so when I took off. I did not climb at Vy, I chose to stay low and build speed first before climbing out. If I had pulled up and stayed in Vy, 50kn, like the manual says, I would have climbed even faster. tewpilots@gmail.com. Glad to talk.
