Mountain landings, density altitude: 2 mile takeoff run in heavy seaplane in Norway. Ep 3/7

In this video: I got more seaplane flying experience and re-familiarisation on this one day in my new shared seaplane than in the last 3 years combined.
4 flights all with water take off and landings, 400 miles, full fuel, and a breathtaking amount of stunning Norwegian fjord and coastal scenery. A full day's flying seaplanes if ever I had one.
Started out in a mountain seaplane base at 3,000ft elevation, and finished, 4 flights later on a coastal dock in Stavanger, with much learned and a great chance to get to know my new dream-machine.
Videos can take a few weeks to edit properly, so follow me on instagram for more timely updates. / charlielamdin

Sorry for the delay folks, this one took more editing than usual! I hope you enjoy watching this a fraction as much as I enjoyed this incredible day flying floats. Everyone should experience this, if only it were more accessible. Fire away with any questions!

Step taxi a couple of big circles before you take off to break suction it can help. And taking off on 1 float! Good job!

Great advice! Need to build confidence doing step turns though.

Charlie these are amazing videos, I have a long playlist of Canada and Alaska floatplane stuff (and brochures from the eighties where I have so much wanted to learn floatplanes) but your flying in Europe and sharing your learning curve I can really relate to these posts. I rate this set of videos as my best viewing, thank you from Dorset.

Jeez Charlie, awesome footage and great edit. Appreciate just how much work goes into the post production. Those high density take offs concentrate the mind somewhat - how on earth do the Alaskans and Canadians ever carry a decent load with those sorts of power margins…?! In a previous life I used to fly old low powered piston helicopters, and having negative power margins definitely teaches you a thing or two, but I take my hat off to what you’re doing there! Operating from the sea water inlets, how is the aircraft coping with the saltwater corrosion issues? Ps: I reckon a battery powered water pump for those floats might be a good investment 😊 👍

That plane has spent it's entire life in the Norwegian fjords! It's been properly maintained. It's getting full corrosion proofing and new paint this winter, can't wait to see it in the spring. Yes, those high density altitude takeoffs concentrate the mind, and the attention on the tiny margins of power, lift, drag etc requiring micro management!

Taking off in a sea plane looks like a lot of excessive anxiety!

Awesome video, brought back a lot of happy memories. I spent a lot of time in Stavanger and some in Bergen and made the trip between them several times. This was on an offshore vessel though, not a seaplane, unfortunately. I love the Sola Strand hotel, lovely place.

They only had one night available when I got there so I had to move to the "Quality Airport Hotel" which, despite its dubious-sounding name, was actually quite good, but not as nicely located as the Sola Strand.

@@CharlieLamdin Yes, the company used to use the Quality for various meetings, so I've stayed there too.

Wow, amazing trip and the camera work and editing are great... those take off runs look a bit hairy though!

Looks like fun! I did think about getting a seaplane rating (in the UK), but (back then...), I couldn't see any practical use for it... I would have loved to be able to land on the Thames! (In fact, on the film I was working on at the time we did manage to get clearance for a 'city venture capitalist' to do just that... complicated!) PS I forgot take off flaps until the last second on one very memorable journey... when I get to write my biography, it will be there! Please keep enjoying flying!

Did that film get made and is there a scene of a seaplane on the Thames?!

@@CharlieLamdin Yep! I'll try and dig it out... I have noticed it is not on my imdb database, but think I know where to find it... (It was a long time ago!)

Awesome! Thank you. Will look that up. 1989 was one of my favourite years - it's the year I got my driving licence (freedom!) AND the year my Merc 560SEL was ordered and bought by the Saudi Embassy in London. I'm only its 3rd owner

Awesome video again - Can yo get floats that can retract wheels, or would that be too heavy!! Love the scenery.
@CharlieLamdin
@CharlieLamdin 2 года назад
Yes you can, but with a severe weight penalty and double the insurance premiums. They're called amphibious floats. They're awesome, but dangerous too. Accidental wheel-down water landings are often fatal.

Yet another great video. The takeoff distance is much longer than landings, am I right?
@CharlieLamdin
@CharlieLamdin 2 года назад
Not always, but usually yes. I have a friend with a Cessna 180 with a pponk engine and big prop in Maine USA, who cam get off the water in around 150m! But at altitude, yes always a longer takeoff
