After nearly losing his life in a riverboat explosion, then losing all of his savings in a tragic fire, a desperate young man named Howell promises his bride-to-be that he will do whatever it takes to make enough money to be able to marry her and start a nice life. He signs on with a fur company in St. Louis, hoping to make his fortune by capitalizing on the demand for beaver pelts.
But the job is dangerous, perhaps the most dangerous in North America at the time. Because in order to get to the beaver, the fur trappers must trespass on the lands of the feared and fearsome Blackfoot.
The Blackfoot do not care about Howell’s troubles, nor about his hopes for a better future for himself and his young family. They care that he and his friends are intruders, here to steal their resources. And for this transgression, they will show no pity.
