Mountains are perhaps the most magnificent scenes for landscape photographers to capture, and in this video I take you through the making of an image from capture in the Italian Dolomites to final processing.
I’ll be leading a workshop in this fantastic place next autumn, check out my website www.andymumford.com/workshops or the workshop company I partner in www.light-explorers.com/works... for more information.

Hi Julius, how are you? It was great to meet you and Oya at Seceda, hope the rest of your trip went well. I actually tried to film this at Seceda on the previous evening but the wind and the lack of really interesting light made me give up. I tried again at Tre Cime, but the wind there was incredible, so this was my third attempt. Glad you like it. If we're ever in Berlin we'll look you up, and likewise if you make it over to Portugal let me know.

What a wonderful video thank you for all the insight. I would like to see a similar video involving the actual taking of the photograph. Just to get a fix on the way you are approaching settings and the like. Just involves us the viewer in the experience I suppose. Fab video though thank you.
@AndyMumford
@AndyMumford 6 лет назад
Hi Jan, glad you liked the video. There's actually not much more to say about the actual capture in this particular case. Timing (for the light) and then composition were the first priority, then because I was doing a multiple exposure the actually exposure settings were less important. I set the aperture to f8 and f13 on almost all my landscape shots to get the sharpest image possible and depth of field was never an issue here. The I just set the shutter time according to the camera's meter...as I said, bracketing meant I was always going to have the whole exposure range covered. White balance is always at manual (it's easy to tweak later in RAW files) and a scene like this where there's nothing particularly close to the camera means I can really on the cameras autofocus to get it right. For a more complex scene with a foreground that's close to the camera then I might shoot in manual focus.

for stitched panorama shots you should not only mention to shoot on manual, you have to set a fixed ISO as well! Auto ISO will do the same as any auto exposure!
@AndyMumford
@AndyMumford 5 лет назад
Isn't it self-evident? Manual exposure means all of the exposure triangle (shutter speed, aperture and ISO) on manual.

@AndyMumford

Thanks for watching Graham, glad you liked the video. Sharpening, generally I remove it all in Lightroom (I just forgot for this video) and then only sharpen the JPEG when/if I resize for the web at the end.

I really like your vision of landscape photography and Dolomites are an amazing place to go at least once in life. I love panoramic images and I wanted to ask you a question: do you use manual focus in every single frame or auto-focus? Thank you and keep going! :)
@AndyMumford
@AndyMumford 6 лет назад
Hi Davide, glad you like the video. For the most part I use autofocus unless I'm doing something complex like focus blending with a foreground that comes very close to the lens. In these shots the whole scene is far enough away that shooting at f8 there's very little chance of the autofocus getting it wrong.

Hi Andy, I've been following your work for a while now and I believe this video is the perfect timing to say that you do an amazing work! Thank you very much for sharing this with the community. I have one question, since you use Fujifilm cameras. Do you change the camera calibration to any of the Fuji profiles? Thank you very much!
@AndyMumford
@AndyMumford 6 лет назад
Thanks Pedro, glad you like the video and my work. I never use the Fuji profiles in Lightroom for landscape work. They tend to introduce contrast, increase shadows or highlights etc, and I like to control the processing completely myself. I only use the Fuji profiles in camera for images when I'm just going to use the JPGs.
@pedromfs
@pedromfs 6 лет назад
Thank you very much for your reply Andy! I was wondering that because I always struggle in my post process when I try to use one of the Camera Profiles available in Lightroom and end up always using the "Adobe Standard" one. Please, continue to post material of this quality :)

Hi Jim, glad you liked the video. I've not used Luminar...I'm pretty much sold into the Adobe ecosystem to be honest and quite like Photoshop, not to mention the plug ins I mentioned in the video (the Luminosity Action Panel and Nik Software). I've occasionally considered switching to Capture One, but LR and PS work pretty well for me so I'm loathe to dedicate time to learning new software.

@AndyMumford
@AndyMumford 6 лет назад
Thanks, glad you like the videos. I personally don't have any issues with the RAF files, but it's a subjective thing. What for me might not be a problem someone else might have issues with.
@1spitfirepilot
@1spitfirepilot 6 лет назад
Thanks! That was useful and interesting - and the pics are outstanding, of course. Here's a basic question, though: at one point you bracketed, or indicated you might bracket, when doing a panorama. If you do that, is it best to merge each bracketed frame in LR, and once you've done that, go on to merge the blended shots as a pano? I only ask, because I tried that and had difficulties in LR. This was almost certainly down to error on my part, but I'd like to know the order you'd do it in.
@AndyMumford
@AndyMumford 6 лет назад
Thanks for the comment, glad you like the video. I've done the blending and then pano merging both ways; i.e. first blend the individual images and then merge them into a pano, or first merge all the exposures into panos and then merge the panos. Both work, but the second approach takes longer and there's more potential for variation between the way Lightroom distorts the images to create the panorama meaning they might not line up perfectly when you blend the exposures. It's best to blend the individual images first, make sure you haven't done anything to them at all and your blending the original RAWs with no changes to exposure, cropping, etc. As i said in the video the blended DNGs should look exactly the same as your base exposure (as long as you reset any changes that Lightroom has made to the sliders), and then as long as your base exposure were all at the same exposure settings across each frame of the pano then LR shouldn't have any problem with it. What kind of difficulties did you have in LR?
@1spitfirepilot
@1spitfirepilot 6 лет назад
Andy Mumford I just couldn't get it to make a pano after I'd done the blending. I assumed there was an issue in principle with them being blended that I was missing. Thanks to your very helpful and clear reply I now conclude that this was simply user error on my part. It's great to know this as I bracket quite often ( I have only got screw in filters, and therefore can't use graduated filters on the camera). I'm using the XT2 and the 10-24 and 55-200 a great deal, as you do, and get very pleasing results from that equipment - but that bracket + pano issue was the one thing that was frustrating me in LR. So many thanks for that information; you've been very helpful. My next challenge will be to try emulate your photoshop expertise!

Very useful to see the workflow from start to end, good work Andy. Filters v bracketing...an interesting debate. Presumably bracketing better on those images because of the big jagged peaks (compared to flatter scenes)? Would be interested in your views as to whether there’s a better route. Personally I find the use of grad filters a bit of a faff and prefer to sort out when editing.
@AndyMumford
@AndyMumford 5 лет назад
Hi Simon, I mostly bracket these days, and although there are occasions when a grad helps (long exposures with reflections because a bracket exposure may mean the sky and reflection exposure don't match due to being taken 30 second apart or so).
@juliajbm2010
@juliajbm2010 6 лет назад
Hi Andy. I'm really enjoying your videos, and gleaned a lot of useful info too. Discovered this one just in time for my first Dolomites trip next week! I bracket regularly when NDGs are not suitable. However, by how much I bracket is more with luck rather than judgement! please could you tell me how you decide on how many stops to bracket. Does this depend on how much contrast you are faced with, ie the greater the contrast, the wider the bracketing needs to be? Many thanks, and please keep these videos coming!!
@AndyMumford
@AndyMumford 6 лет назад
Hi Julia Sorry for taking so long to get back to you, I've been travelling in Iceland. For bracketing I decide depending on the light and contrast in the scene, but I never bracket in jumps of more than one stop, so I'll usually to one stop above and one below, but in a particular high contrast scene I'll do five shots, with -2, -1, 0, +1, +2

Hi Andy! Cool video and great photo! I am currently looking to go mirrorless from my Canon DSLR. Seriously considering Fuji. One thing that worries me is reports of the X trans sensor producing some weird results in lightroom. Seems a bit unclear if its true or a myth. Have you had any issues? Thanks
@AndyMumford
@AndyMumford 6 лет назад
Hi Ben, thanks for the comment. It sounds a bit weird to say it but I think the issue is subjective, depending partly on your workflow and partly on how much of a pixel peeper you are. I haven't had any problem with the X trans sensor III (which is the one in the current series of cameras - X-T2, X-T20, X-Pro2, X-E3, X100f) although I did get the smeary foliage with the older cameras like the X-T1. However, as you can see from the video I don't do any sharpening in Lightroom (which seems to be a major cause of the problem), and very little sharpening overall. I just sharpen the resized versions for web in Photoshop. I'm also not really a pixel peeper. Sorry if this isn't a great answer, but the truth of the matter is that some people have no problem at all, while others do, which is I guess why, as you say, it's unclear if it's true of a myth. The best thing I think you can do is download some of the raw files from places like dpreview, or take an SD card to your local dealer and shoot some of your own images, then play around with them yourself to see how you feel about them. Sorry I can't be of more help mate.

Thanks a bunch, Andy! One quick question. About your cropping at the very end. You used a custom size. How would you take the final edit, at those dimensions and print it or sell it when customers are looking for a typical size for framing? Keep up the great work.
@AndyMumford
@AndyMumford 6 лет назад
Hi Gabe I generally try to keep the same ratio as the original shot, but if I do crop it'll generally be because I think a certain ratio suits the image better (as was the case with this image).

Hi Andy, Great video! Regarding the panoramic shot, are you using a nodal slide? What's your technique for avoiding parallax in the foreground?
@AndyMumford
@AndyMumford 6 лет назад
Hi iPatrick, thank, glad you like the video. I don't use a nodal slide on the tripod...my philosophy is to try and be as lightweight as possible and a nodal slide doesn't really fit into that. The vast majority of my panos or done with telephotos so parallax in the foreground isn't an issue really...I can't think of the last time I shot a pano wider than 50mm (full frame). Sorry, that's probably not particularly helpful.

@AndyMumford
@AndyMumford 6 лет назад
Hi, thanks for the comment, glad you like the video. For shooting landscapes I shoot in RAW so it doesn't matter what simulation you use as it's not on the file. You can add the simulation to the RAW files in Lightroom as a preset, but it's not something I ever really do as I prefer to choose how I edit the images myself.

Hi there, I was very impressed with your video especially as you showed both skills of someone I’m looking for. I’m in the initial phase of my fantastic idea for celebrating my 50th in early 2021. I’ve recently got the bug for hiking / trekking and have already done Mount Snowdon, however for my 50th I wish to take on the absolutely amazing Annapurna Circuit Trek in Nepal. I’m certainly not a professional photographer but I have the utmost respect for superb quality photos and an inner passion for landscape photography. I am therefore looking to find a semi professional photographer, a HD Drone / Cameraman and keen hikers to join me at the end of Feb 2021 in Katmandu, Nepal. Approximately 21 days expedition covering the 100km+ Trek in The Himalayas. I’m looking for a passionate photographer looking to explore their passion in an amazing country with one of the best landscapes on this planet. Would you be interested? If not do you know any friends of yours who might find this amazing journey to good to turn away from. Please let me know, cheers.

Hi Ryan Thanks for the comment, glad you like the video, and thanks for the invite to the Himalaya. It sounds like a fantastic trip you've got planned. Unfortunately I'll have to decline though. I can speak to some friends though, and also workshop clients who may be interested in making a trip like that. All the best

What about sharpening? Thanks!

For web sharpening I use the same Tony Kuyper action panel I use for Luminosity Masks. It resizes and sharpens for the web. For prints I a small amount of unsharp mask

Andy Mumford Hi Andy, I also wanted to question your sharpening techniques, your presentation is exceptional! Regarding the Tk web sharpening, do you size it to 2048 on the long side for web use? If so, what size do you recommend exporting a panorama or a 1:1 image? Big thanks and thanks for the tips! Kind regards, Tony

Hi Tony, thanks for the comment, glad you liked the video. I generally use 2500 along the longest edge, but for 1:1 images I'll do it a little smaller

Hi Drew. I have the default sharpening in Lightroom set to zero and don't do any sharpening there. The only sharpening I do is done in PS.
