Mountain Thunder's Final Bow: Western Maryland 734 Photo Charter 2016

For nearly 25 years, Western Maryland steam locomotive #734 captivated both the general public and railfans alike as it charged the former WM mainline from Cumberland to Frostburg every year; carrying the titles as flagship, star, pride and joy of the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad. Sadly, nothing can last forever as 734 is slated to be taken out of service for its 15 years (1472 Days) mandated inspection this year. With this process requiring plenty of time and resources, plus the Chesapeake & Ohio "Mallet" #1309's return to steam in sight, for how long until Mountain Thunder graces the rails once again remains a mystery.
Because of this, Pete Lerro of Lerro Photography was able to host one last photo charter on February 17, 2016. In this video you'll get runbys, caboose and cab rides as the period freight train thunders up the mountain on a mixed cloudy and sunny day. It was truly a sight to behold as Mountain Thunder takes her final bow.

734 just got put in for boiler work, and should be coming back to service soon, alongside 1309, I hope that when they do bring her back they give her the Hancock 3 she wore for so long, that fit her well in my opinion

They plan to rebuild its boiler, so it shouldn't be the last time you can see it in operation.

The Angry Irishman No, but the new and larger 2-6-6-2 is going to run now. It has undergone a couple steam tests now.

Nobody is really sure. Funds ran out for a while whilst restoring 1309, so it will be a while. But, one day in the future, mountain thunder will return.

I know this video was uploaded 3 years ago. But that’s an amazing sounding whistle 734 blew before exiting service. I hope 1309 blows this whistle when she enters service. What a shrilling sound.

Her Whistle on this trip is said to be a Illinois Central 3 chime.

Im more of a fan of the Hancock 3 Chime they used on her for years. That voice suits ole Mountain Thunder the best.

That Hancock 3 was what gave her a voice all her own Hearing that just screamed mountain thunder, just like how the NP 3 chime 4449 wore for so long screamed 4449

Well, I'm not sure if it's 734's last photo shoot, but I think this might've been it's last trip to Frostburg. Apparently there was a landslide along the route, probably in March, and 734 couldn't make it back to Frostburg again.

Too bad the photographer didn't understand that the engine, rather than cars in the consist, is the star of the show. There is more time given to scenic footage and rail cars that of the engine. He didn't follow the engine around curves or along the trackage. That is a great show of the train sucking the smoke & steam out of the tunnel.
