"if you struck a police horse, it would be the same if you struck a police officer, the same penalties apply" - that's just the cutest thing to say about horses, the amount of respect they get from these police officers is amazing
+Shani Wilkins While I don't think "cute" is the right word to use ("necessary" is better), it's not a matter of "shouldn't be in a position"; the reality is that they are, so it's something that has to be accounted for. Being resentful about it isn't going to do squat to protect them.
Any animal that works for the PD has the same level of respect...you punch or kick a police dog it would be no different than if you were to do that to a uniformed officer
Keira Snowlake yet they abuse the horses with horrible bits and tack the horses are in danger every day from cars and spooking into something or someone. They do take good care of the horses on camera but you don’t know what they do off camera.
Horse "Cops" should be illegal. It's 2021, no need to be working animals to "enforce". Total nonsense. I love horses by the way, I just don't know why we need them to help "police"
The schoolmaster horse I WANT to own, but can't afford in this lifetime is 16.3hh (I'm 5'10" though, and can get on a horse under 15hh without a block, even when I'm what I consider out of shape). It's definitely a bit of a climb without a mounting block. I've seen a couple of amazing horse owners train their horses to kneel for their rider to mount, but most of us mortals just find a rock or a fencepost or something to get that little boost up. 😅
Ahehehe I am 12, 5' 1'' and I have a Dutch Warmblood who is 17.3hh... Also he is only 4 years old so he moves whenever I try to get on him, also I never use a mounting block, I put my foot in the stirrup, grab the front of the saddle, and hoist myself up :)
Huge respect to both people and the horses! To people, because they have patience to train and ride those horses. And to horses, because they stay calm in sometimes very stressing situations. Their level of training is impressive.
Horses enjoy having a purpose and the familiarity of the same partner everyday. ILOVE to see them at work. Both the officer in his uniform and the spiffed up horses look so handsome. It’s the same with a dog in the K-9 units.
Sooner Mimi I’m sure these horses want nothing more than to run on a large pasture. But they have to work all day and barely get any pasture time if they do at all.
@@alannamccarthy3947 PLEASE. A horse is one animal that knows how to get what he wants. If he didn't want to work he would have shown that. All I saw were relaxed horses. Just study the horse first, before you can speak for them. "they want nothing more than to run on a Green pasture" stop with these fairy tales, black beauty type of thinking. Horse graze, the only reason they run in a pasture is because of fear.
Idk how you can like seeing animals put in danger and everyday . I don't think horses want to have a purpose everything they want is to eat and play. And tbh a lot of those horses are being abused while training or still.
The reason I ride horses is because I've loved them since I was 2. I started riding when I was 6. I am now 14 and my dad inspires me because he is a mounted police officer. His horse is very pretty and I enjoy riding and I enjoy seeing him ride too.
I couldn't think of anything better then working with horses in a career that you enjoy . Having such a special working relationship with your horse and a personal bond knowing that you both are going to be looking out for each other and helping people must be very rewardimg .
Shani Wilkins The horses have been trained and yes they could get ran over but if you saw that massive thing in the middle of the road in front of you , you’d stop. They are very intimidating and could get information out of people , and make people’s day by meeting these amazing creatures. Before cars horses were on the street all the time with the carriages running over there hoofs and all sorts , here they are well cared for , big and strong and do a good thing. Horses are one of the most loyal creatures, and can be trained very well. I’d like to think that they had trained the horse to get out of the road if they thought they were in a dangerous position.
Shani Wilkins and also if you go on a hack your endangering your horse but if your on the back of it you can steer it off the road. Hacks are very common with horse riders and help build confidence near roads for your horses.
@@shaniwilkins6199 Traffic cops do it all the time, and it's far more dangerous for them than a 1500 pound horse. But of course you don't care about that as long as your gods are safe.
Very interesting video. My wife donated her dressage horse to New Castle County Police Mounted Unit years ago and my understanding is that his preference was always to be a police horse instead of a dressage horse and he became quite successful.
I really can’t stop enjoying all the Internet trainers in this comment section. People who talk about what bits suit these horses or how thin the saddle pad is. Just shows how much they don’t know. They look like they are well taken care of and I’m sure that they have properly fitted saddles.
I played sso with my friend who also rides horses to see how awful it is and it’s not at all realistic. I wouldn’t expect that from a game, but it’s absolutely not realistic AT ALL. People who just play sso and think they know everything are idiots
Bravo!, wonderful way to interact with the community!, may the good Lord bless, protect and guide each of you and your mounts! Thank You for all that you do!
All these SSO and 11 year olds believing they know everything. These horses are absolutely bomb proof and if you complain about the bit or think otherwise, you know nothing about horses.
Nugget06horse Socity umm... when did u learn that? Tasha Mott and I are equestrians who actually ride horses irl and know that if you ride horses properly the bit doesn't matter and doesn't hurt the horse.
@@maddinglyf328 where the heck did you learn that!? As someone who has been riding since they were 6 and grew up with horses knows that bits aren't bad whatsoever...as long as their properly fitted and the proper bit is used for what your doing with gentle hands it's really HARMLESS ,causes zero pain whatsoever.none of my horses have ever been in pain because of it
Nugget06horse Socity When you’ve been on an actual horse, you can talk about irl horses. Until then? Keep playing your little pixel horsie game and stfu
I kind of just want to got to take care of the horses for them! I have been working/riding with horses for over 7 years! They are so sweet. I love how the horses just sit there and wait patently for the officers to do their work! So cute. I love Clydesdales.
The horses looks like they are engoying their jobs? Are you crazy? You don't know nothing about horses to think that this is what they like to do, in fact that horse even spooked when that old lady threw the water bottle and after that he was so anxious that he couldn't even stay still.
@Tineke Piggott You're right, it's not what they prefer. They would prefer to stand around and eat all day and be useless to everyone but themselves. I would prefer to stay home and do whatever I wanted all day instead of going to work, too, but that would make me useless. These horses have a purpose, and a noble one. It is great to see these animals laying down the law instead of always being the victims.
I would actually consider this military style, it differs a little from English and I'm not sure what other tack you would be referring to, I hope not western ... because I highly doubt they would get much use for western tack in the middle of a city with no cattle.
109367 I highly doubt that also. But many departments actually tack up western for no apparent reason. Also, many riders tack up western for no reason related to cattle etc. I think it is just because western had become a WESTERN and American tradition, and western tack is much cheaper.
Kyla M. I believe most tack up western because it would be more comfortable for the rider if they have a long day of riding around, and it allows for more spread out pressure on the horses back too. Not 100% if its right, but its just my thoughts.
TalkToTheTurtle actually, you are right. Western also offers a more 'fitted' seat which also helps with balance and staying on. Honestly western saddles aren't just for cattle herding. Infact their whole design is meant for long term comfort and a deep seat to allow riders to work long hours and stay on if a horse spooks or needs to make jerky/sudden motions. There is a reason most peope use western when going for trail rides.
As a horse lover, I will say this group is fantastic. Who would have thought riding a Clydesdale now that has to be awesome? I wonder if any of the Officers named the horse BUD.
My bum hurts after an hour in a Western saddle. They are so hard and force your legs into a static position. English saddles for me, rode 8+ hours daily in them and was fine. :)
Easier on the horses to go english, most western saddles can range from 30 - 60 pounds and that adds up when you also take into account the extra gear the officers bring for police work.
You really are so selfish if you think that a horse has to walk all day on a street (which is bad for them) between cars, loud noises and high temperatures just because you like to sit on their back going around the city doing stuff.
@@asiasidoti5606 That's what you think the mounted patrol does? Just goes around the city doing stuff? You need to do some research before running your ignorant mouth.
Ashley Medina I get that they should but it does mess up the fit of the saddle and most of the time half pads are used if u were riding a pony or horse that isn't as big and their back is a bit shorter if that Makes sense
You’d need to fit the saddle to the horse’s back plus the half pad which squished down over time. It’s easier to get a saddle fit to your horses back throw a thin pad on so you don’t have anything else you have to deal with.
Same! I live in Monterey, CA and there are several spots on the peninsula that are quite hilly. The Carmel Valley is full of equestrian trails so it would make perfect sense for Monterey's police department to have a mounted unit.
No one: Equestrians being told about horse hoof and body stuff: mhm, yep, yeah, we know, oh yeah I do that too! I know what the frog is -_- No offense I’m an equestrian my self xd
@@gerrycoleman7290 Again, for the millionth time. Bits are not abusive or painfull when ussed correctly. If you don't agree with that, then you should use boots, gloves shirts or any other piece of item you may wear or use when riding, because all of those can be just as abusive and painfull to a horse as a bit. Even my long hair can be as traumatising to a horse as being literally kicked with spurs. *Not all horses can even be ridden in a hackamore or bitless.*
@@marialindell9874 Most any horse can be ridden in a traditional hackamore or rope halter, or for that matter no head gear at all. It all depends on the mutual trust and respect that has developed. When properly used these use finesse not fear.
In the UK we would never deploy mounted to a speed trap because it's an inefficient use of the horses. The only advantage of using a horse over a car for this would seem to be that the cars are white, while the horses are brown & can be placed in-front of the brown trees to provide camouflage. For this I would suggest using a moped, which is small & blends into the background. On other types of deployment, such as neighbourhood patrols, horses have a distinct advantage & are often not deployed enough by constabularies which see them primarily as a crowd control tool. Still, I can see a training advantage in that it gets the horses used to being around cars & not responding to what they do.
I love that the horses are considered police it makes sense. And I love when their called by the title of officer as in "Officer Oreo" and wear badges because they are ❤️💝❤️
They use draft horses with English saddles. I would've expected western because those seem more like working and roping, which are built for police work. Master Corporal your horse needs more work its too spooky.
@@rajinbin true but if it isn't needed then there is no need, plus if the office needs to do any chasing its probably better in an English saddle. I prefer western but to each their own.
So happy to see the hooves are treated with the best hoof care ... KEVIN BACON. My farrier recommended that for my horse and he had perfect feet all his life...Damn Good Stuff.
It's nice to see that the horses don't need perspect visors to protect their eyes. Sad to see the British police horses having to use them in crowd control for football matches...
that's a police horses job in the UK . get over it doesn't hurt them to wear protection at all .they're not just used for matches they're also used for riots when needed .
XOUknownXoXo Nmukiopljkhgbvfcdxsyaqwertzuiop R.M. You can definitely pet the horses. Some K9’s don’t like to be petted. Either way just make sure you ask first ☺️
Oil only works well if the hooves are NOT dry. It keeps the moist in. If the hooves are dry and you apply oil, you actually prevent the hooves from absorbing moist. It will dry them out even worse. Soak the hooves for a long time and then apply oil. And take a good look at what oil you are using. Jojoba oil dries out the skin and hooves. Just a nice tip. The lady giving the cop water, how nice! It is amazing to see how an animal can bring people out of their houses, but also be kinder towards others. I know that police horses don't have an easy life sometimes. They are dragged into a situation they don't want to be in. They are trained not to respond to danger (like traffic and noise), but that doesn't mean they don't have stress or fear. They just don't respond. (nice article about this in the university of Guelph archives) But they are treated very well. The officers care. And so do most humans.
@@breyerowner2130, I own draft horses. And no, their bodies are not that different. The hoof is made of keratine. Oil forms a layer over the hoof, but will not be absorbed fully. The molecules of oil are too big. Water has small molecules and will be absorbed in the hoof. If you close off a dry hoof, it will stay dry. If you close off a moist hoof, it will stay moist for longer. But gosh, what do I know, right? Just studied hoof care (how to trim, take care of and prevent hoof problems) and years and years of experience and owning draft horses.
Spurs ore not used a a form of punishment. They are used as a reinforcement of a request. It should always go body position, leg/voice, then squeeze with the spur. Never star fishing, or wildly spurring out of nowhere. These big draft horses that they are using for police work tend to A: know their size and take full advantage B: Be dull/Lazy, low energy couch potatoes who would rather go back to bed than work! Occasionally they need a reminder from their handlers that they do in fact need to move! I personally only use spurs when absolutely needed. One of my horses moves solely on body language and voice! Move from passive/neutral to tipped forward/Go position and you damn well better be ready for her to move! Cluck or accidentally squeeze your legs while giving the go signal and she will launch out from underneath you! On the other side I have a mare who no matter how nicely you ask will not go faster than a snails pace without the rider wearing spurs. You do not need to use said spurs but just her knowing you have them is enough of a psychological threat that she goes from no way in hell to yes mam in a flash. Much like how pulling a police K9 out will get a suspect to rapidly change their mind about running!
pandaplays101 Oh my GOD no they don't. There are so many different types of bits. Some softer, some stronger. A snaffle is one of the softer ones and a curb could be classed as a stronger one. However, a lot of people allow themselves to abuse the horse more in a snaffle rather than a curb. It's not the persons preference on bitted or bitless, the horse makes that decision.
Shelley Berry if you change the amount of a horses feed it could cause colic horses have small stomachs and they cant eat a lot of grain it could cause colic.
Right? And it looked like he was practically pulling the horse to try to get it to walk faster, first of all if youre directly in front of it it probably wont go faster, and also thats just not how you do it

If you've got such a problem with bits, just stay out of the subject. You're basically saying that it hurts if someone trys to eat a biscuit. Its the same thing, just you can't eat a bit and it doesn't taste as good. Bits only hurt if you yank, the police officers obviously weren't pulling, so it wouldn't have hurt. I hate it hen people say that bits at bad when their not.
Bit less bridles still have the same pressure, i think loads of people have a misunderstanding of bits. Both bits and bit less bridles hurt just as much. One thing i hear people say lots is "try putting a bit in your mouth and tell me it doesn't hurt". If you know anything about bridles, you'll know that the most common bit less bridle basically has the reins hooked on to the nose band, and it still has meal circles on it so when you pull on one side, the other side will have the metal circle digging in. Since there's no strap or bit to keep the bridal from slipping back, it must be part of the cheek bone that stops it. So it'll be pushing on the one of the bones or tendons or whatever that stops it from slipping back, which would hurt. And if you say that you don't pull enough on the bit less bridle to make it hurt, you don't pull enough on a bit to make it hurt ether.
If you want to save some MONEY refill that hoof lubricator container with Mineral oil....Waste of gas carrying one horses in that huge trailer.. I have to wonder How well they would stay n if someone hit their horn....
I hate bits so much I don't even use Rein's Ive rode bareback all my life so when I see bits I just don't like it its OK if its a certain bit you use my friend uses one but compared to the one they have its much smaller and dosent clank on the horses teeth or pull its just my say in it if you like bits then that's fine but just know (most) bits explicitly ones like that don't need to be used
I Agree, I do hate bits. Though, they have to be used improperly for it to hurt. If you are taught the proper way, you can ride with a bit. Ex: Learning to ride using just your legs and no reins. Then using the reins to squeeze, meaning the bit is a contact point so when you squeeze, they know what you are asking. Though, you must use them properly. If not used in the proper way, I despise the people for not bothering to learn better.
Shame on them for trailering horses with windows down Extremely dangerous for horse yo have head out the window...I don't care how seasoned they are still animals and something could get into the eyes
That's what trailer screens are for to allow air flow but keep debris out of the horse's eyes so windows down IF you use screens. Some people also use fly masks if their horses insist on hanging their head out and their trailers don't have screens.
For anyone that's curious about the piece of tack that's attached to the front of the saddle, it's called a "breast collar". The shape may be diffrent, but it had the same function as the girth: To prevent the saddle from sliding off.
r w well thats up to the way a horse is trained and you dont have to train them with a bit so you clearly donz have to use one. Which would be better bc a bit hurts the horse

I have seen a lot of the comments, and it’s. Baffles me on how much stupidity there is! These animals weigh around 1,000 pounds depending on the breed. If they where upset, uncomfortable, or not happy they could show it. Look at how calm they where while getting equipment put on them. Bits don’t hurt the horses either, it gives the officers better control, without that control, the horse could possibly run into traffic, or cause itself harm. The officers have respect for the animals! They give each of the horses there own trailer, which where nice ones, full of food and water. They have nice stables, and equipment. These horses where trained too, they could be out on a farm with no food, getting forced to pull things around. These horses are also specific breeds. Breeds that can handle working. They are not over worked at all, they have multiple horses, so they can take shifts. They are not whatsoever overworked. They have specialized cut hoods too. Not to mention they extremely great veterans they have to care for them them. They don’t have any ribs showing, proving they are not underfed. And with just a glimpse of the stables and fields, they seem to have a nice home. Nothing you see here is animal abuse, it is amazing people, who give these horses a purpose! Stop the hate, and spread of false fact. These animals are extreamly luck you to have the care they get.
That's not true, horses are large animals that can be more disruptive than helpful. Also, the horses can overheat quickly, and they have strong bits in their mouths all day that can be harmful to the horses teeth over long periods of time.
Audrey Bridges wrong . my horses are bitted one with a Pelham and 3 ring gag I have their teeth rasped regulary their mouths bit size and saddle size also checked by my vet every 4 to 6 months not once have I damaged my horses mouths. another uneducated person about horse dentistry I see
