In this video I am mounting a roto-cast sculpture on it's base. I fill the void with Urethane Foam to provide for stable mounting for the pin.

Hi there, so great to see a South African tutorial for these bases. I've recently started exploring sculpture and been trying to figure how to start with mounting simple air dry sculptures to wooden dowels in mdf bases before I work my way to other clays, metal work and wherever my hands and creativity takes me. Thanks for this! All part of the learning, much appreciated for sharing your knowledge.

Beautiful work. Thank you for sharing your talent. I just started sculpting so I know next to nothing about how things go together. The tip about the foam and the epoxy was helpful

That is amazing. Enjoy your sculpture journey. Sculpture is part art with a good dose of problem solving and engineering grown in.

I picked up some Sapele offcuts from a building site. I then sand the wood to a fine finish before applying wood oil. I go through a couple of sandpaper grades ending on 1200grit. I use a wood Finnish made by Pronature here in South Africa but Tung or Danish oil will do the trick.

How did you place firmly the stainless rod in the block of wood? TIA.

Romy Santos if I remember correctly I filed some notches into the rod and then used epoxy glue to glue it into the wooden base.

Thank you for reply. Yes, I've seen that when you mounted the sculpture in your video. I meant at the beginning: When you already had the stainless rod in the wooden base. I'm curious how you had secured it firmly so the rod won't slip in the wooden base. A nut and bolt are in the wood? TIA.

Will it (polyurethane foam) adhere on wood? Where can I buy Part A and B (specs to tell the hardware person, pls.)? I meant to use it to close a large cavity on a wood sculpture (from a cut tree trunk) I'm making. How did you do the math to produce the exact expansion you needed. TIA.

Hi Romy Here is a link to Smooth On's website. See if you have a supplier in your area. www.smooth-on.com/category/foam/ The Foam will definitely stick to wood unless you apply a release agent. The foam I use has a 1:1 mix ratio and expands about 15 times. But check the data sheets and I am sure the supplier will be able to give you advice. Smooth On also has some great videos here on RU-vid.
