Having been a caregiver for my husband with pancreatic cancer, his mouth was dry, no water, but the swabs came in handy. I hope he liked the flavor. 😊 he was a trooper all the way through. God bless the caregivers out there. You’re doing great

Both of my parents are now in hospice. Thank you for your wonderful lessons and care, they’ve been so helpful. This has been the most difficult aspect of my life as I am also a senior. How could I manage thru this long, long goodbye process without your guidance.

Just want to remind you about the most most important decision we need to make before we die, and that is to accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior. My father just passed, and wasnt able to pass this on to him in time. I just wanted to let you know a little about what the bible says. For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. So no one is good enough to get to heaven due to the law of the 10 commandments. Bible also says, its not by works should any one boast. So being a good person does not get you to heaven either. The only way to heaven is by repenting of your sins, and putting your faith in Jesus. Bible says, Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. So you see, there is a need for salvation to get to heaven, that is why Jesus died on the cross. He took all of our sins upon him, so that if we call upon him, and accept Him into our Heart, we can have eternal life. We must be Born Again to enter the kingdom of God. You do not get there being a good person, or doing good deeds. Jesus also says, that I am the way, the Truth, and the Life, no one comes unto the father, except through me. So please make that decision, so that you can have peace and comfort when your time is up. Its the most important decision of your life. you can then have that eternal peace and assurance before you die. All you you need to do is simply, humble your heart and pray with faith, I repent of my sins, and I turn to You. You said in Your word that if we confess with our mouth the Lord Jesus, and believe in our hearts that God raised Him from the dead, we shall be saved. I ask You Father to forgive me of all my sins, and ask You to fill me with the Holy Spirit, and take control of my life. Its the most important decision of anyone's life. Jesus is the only way to heaven. Please believe me, and research for yourself. Once its over, there is no turning back. Jesus cares for you, and does not wish for you to be separated from him. So many people think that being a good person gets you there, and its simply not true, so please don't ignore. Today is the day of salvation. He loves you, and does wish for anyone to be apart from Him, but to have eternal life in heaven. Be blessed.

I was the sole caretaker for my mom years ago. She had home health care come a couple times a week because she was on TPN. But no one ever suggested hospice to me, and from all I've learned from your videos, I could have really used that service. I do have to hand it to the nurse that came the morning mom passed. She stayed with me, made necessary calls to the police and funeral home, and just stayed to help comfort me until family arrived. I guess since she was a home health care nurse, and not a hospice or palliative care nurse, she didn't have to do that. But I still felt so alone trying to take care of her by myself, especially since I was dealing with my own health issues. I'm now living with my mother-in-law, and expect to need the things you've taught when it's time for her. Thank you for all you do to educate us in what can be a difficult time.

Julie: I’m a caregiver and by following you, I’ve learned so much about hospice care. I was able to use this knowledge in the past three weeks with my client P, who died this morning from glioblastoma multiforme. She was an amazing lady and I am devastated. I’ve been helping her for several months but she was admitted to hospice only a month ago. I was able to explain more to her family about what to expect from the Cheyne-Stokes breathing than her hospice nurses did. This comforted them. I was also able to administer the hospice medications with confidence, knowing what they were for. (My experience with hospice nurses in Utah hasn’t been positive, sadly) Thank you so much for sharing your experiences with us. You make such a difference to me and so many others. You are amazing! And the nose can dry out too when on oxygen therapy. I would use a little KY liquid on a q-tip and apply it to the insides of both nostrils. Also for the skin when changing the diaper is to use a diaper rash medicine which is high in zinc.

What worked best for my mom (98) was mini ice cubes made of liquids she enjoyed drinking when she was well. Despite we had a sippy cup, drinking will cause her to cough too much and she started refusing to drink to avoid the coughing when she was no longer able to get herself straight up enough to help herself cough (she had a fractured arm impeding her to move around and the hostpital didn't placed a cast on it). Afterwards, I wished I would have been more knowledgeable of issues of this nature to provide better help, on the other hand you never know in advance how is it going to happen and what circumstances you'll be facing with your loved one. To all giving care to others: Hat off to you, and please take care of yourself too, don't forget about your needs in the process.

Hi, I’m a nurse in the UK & the sponges on sticks for mouthcare are banned completely in Wales & by many health trusts in England. This is due to 800+ reported incidents of the foam coming off and at least one fatality from a patient inhaling the sponge when it came off.

Like my design engineer husband says, you don’t get rid of something because .00001 % of people had a bad experience and most likely misused or abused the item. As for these sponges they been around since I began as a nurse 1973. How many people do you think had a caregiver use those sponges in one year across the western world. How many since 1973….makes 800 a micron pretty insignificant.

The sponge on sticks aren’t allowed in the UK anymore due to someone choking I find the differences between UK and US hospice care fascinating

14 year hospice aide here! Then what do u use for mouth care? Just a swab? The sponge is the best for cleaning the mouth.

My poor mom got a bed sore on her lower back when she was in the hospital. It was so large, u could fit your entire fist in it. U could see her spine too. 😞

So sorry to hear that. As a hospice aide it makes me frustrated bc bedsores are entirely preventable. I’ve seen some sores on backs, bottoms and heels that just didn’t have to happen. Sorry for your loss 😢

Good information, thank you. When my father was dying - we never received those sponges from hospices, now I know what to ask for if they don't provide the sponges. I also don't understand why people in hospice are given pills - geez, they can't swallow, their mouth is usually dry and then you give them a pill? What happened to patches, liquid something transdermal. ALso, I found some type of sheep cloth helps with sores.

Interesting, it makes sense. I'd presume it applies in general to those bed bound as well. Does skin break down much more at end of life? As you said, it'd be logical that skin which was not being given full circulation due to circumstances, would not react like the skin would in an otherwise healthy patient.

Hi. In 2017, my Mom chose to stop chemo. Q week later, she collapsed and went to the hospital. She was only there 3 days, when we all went to see her. I was giving her ice chips, when she opened her mouth and I saw her tongue had not only turned black, but had shriveled. She tried to talk and for some reason, I was the only one who could understand what she was trying to say. So why was her tongues shriveled and black? She's been battling ovarian cancer.

My dad ending up getting thrush in the mouth and unfortunately, he was just too weak to swish the medication around his mouth we did our best to take care of it, but we just couldn’t get rid of it😢

The whole dry mouth freaks me out. When I’ve come out of surgery before my mouth was extremely dry like that and it made me panic. Do people panic about that?
