I stayed in Christchurch back in November 1997 during my tour of NZ and loved the place. It's really interesting to see how the rebuild is going after the devastating earthquakes. I especially love the Riverside Market and the beautifully restored Arts Centre 😃, Hope to return in the future to see the new city and the many changes since i was last there. Great video

It’s a pity that they didn’t rebuild some of the destroyed buildings. I understand that they didn’t have all the time in the world, but in Europe they did it in cities such as Dresden and Warsaw. I am not against modern architecture, but some of the buildings lack creativity. In Rotterdam they also didn’t decide to rebuild it after the second world war, and it became a cacophony of modern buildings by architects with big egos. To rebuild a city one needs a vision and more coherence. It’s my opinion. 🤷🏻

They scaled back all the height limits so you couldn’t just rebuild what you had.. maybe in your overseas examples the government owned the buildings and therefore a huge amount of money was allocated and they just built on a mass scale .. too many chch buildings are owned by individuals and it was just too expensive to rebuilt as the rental returns were no longer there. Every few months there are still articles about various businesses going under as the can’t make it stack up in the new building leases they have.
