This is so worth it. The scene: "Get Happy"..Judy at the top of her form, whatever may have been going on in her private life, she shines in that wonderful moment...
I saw this one recently and thought that Judy Garland never looked better than when she did the "Get Happy" number. She looked marvelous and as if she was truly in her element.
On the kitchen table, on the newspapers, on the heads of the chorus standing around gawking while he taps away on everything that isn't moving...and some which is. Ya can't beat Gene.
I adore the musical sequences in this film. That "Get Happy" number is one of my favorites by Judy. I think sometimes Judy's talents as a dancer are overlooked because she was such a dynamic singer. But she held her own with Gene Kelly. Judy Garland, only 4'11 but towering talent.
Around age 10 (?) I saw some of this film on TV, including "Get Happy". Wasn't old enough to appreciate but I never forgot it. What a blessing that such talent and performances are preserved on film and soundtracks. If MGM had supported Judy Garland in all her films as they did here, what other great performances might we have had to enjoy and appreciate.
I discovered your videos quite by accident a few days ago and have made my way through every single one of them now. I have seen the majority of them already, but enjoyed your comments on each and every one. Thank you so very much for sharing your enthusiasm and erudition. You are a blast!
OMG! how can we NOT like Summer Stock! I am telling you every movie from those times were really amazing! Today when I had enough of the work I call up a movie from back then and fall into my t8me machine..she is greatly missed..and yes she could dance .
the way i remember the story about the 'Get Happy' number is that it was shot for 'Easter Parade' a couple of years earlier and they never used it. and that's why she looks so different... i could be wrong but that's how i remember it - anyway, great video. loved this movie for so long, it was nice having you talk about it!
I tellya' I had a real SLUG go after me on FB tonight and I was all hurt and upset and there was a new vid from STEVE :-) the feel good guy telling me all about a fun movie to watch... thank you for cheering me up...I think you're WONDERFUL xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxox - and more HUGs, Dawn
i have always loved this movie, and I thought I was alone, no one ever mentions it, except to show the Get Happy number, (which of course is brilliant,) but I am so glad you love this film too.
Thanks for this review Steve. I've always wondered what movie the clip of Judy Garland singing Come On Get Happy was from. Now I know the rest of the story. Looks like fun. I will have to check it out. Thanks!
Hi, Steve! Thanks for doing this movie! It’s definitely a forgotten classic, and deserves the TOQ treatment. If I could make a request, I would love to see you do ‘ In A Lonely Place’ . I call it the best movie that nobody’s ever heard of ! Sorry for all the exclamation points, but I get excited by all things TOQ !
No apologies nesessary! It's on my 'to do" list. I'm a HUGE Gloria Grahame fan and this one gives her a really great heroine to play in the Bacall tradition and she more than fills the bill. She's smart, funny, sexy and supportive. I love her rapport with Bogie. He seems, despite the character's neurosis, to be relaxed and having a very good time. Have a lovely holiday season and thanks so much for your enthusiasm and please, stay SAFE! Best: Steve
Wonderful film....I think her jacket in Get Happy was like the one she was supposed to wear in a cut number from Easter Parade called, "Mr. Monotony", but they decided it was too risque' a costume for a movie set in about 1914. What a rabbit hole your channel is...I swear I say, "Just one more" and before I know it, it's after midnight or later!
Well, you just made my day! Thank you so much for the wonderful comments. I so appreciate it. Please keep watching and subscribe if you haven't already Thanks again and stay SAFE! Best Wishes; Steve
Besides being one of the legendary dancers, he was unbelievable sexy!...just sayin'..Thanks for watching! Don't forget to push the "Like" button. It really helps!.
Judy was a tiny little thing and 20 pounds really showed on her frame. Through most of the film she has a somewhat frumpy hairdo and that extra weight. The Get Happy number is the way we really want to see her. So many good things about this movie, but the word was she was finished in movies. With a Crystal Ball we would have known there would be many triumphs ahead, but that can't negate the many problems she had that were only heightened by her treatment by MGM from the beginning - Uppers, downers and who know what else. She was like a shooting star. A bright light that would dazzle only to burn out too soon.
Break-a-leg in "Gypsy." I once portrayed Tessie Tura, the Texan Twirler. A gay friend of mine had to teach me how to twirl my tassles. LOL. Have fun, Steve!
Steve, I really enjoy the backstory you bring to your reviews. Judy of course, manages to shine in spite of the matronly look that was odd even for a farm gal. I agree her voice and dancing were superb here, even if some of the songs were not. This is my question. Gene Kelly was a athletic dancer, a good singer, a handsome man, and a big star. As an actor he was good at comedy, but as a romantic lead he was not convincing (to me). He was often cast as the girl crazy guy, but he plays it so that her attention is on him. He seems to portray his romantic rolls as if they are the more likely recipient of adoration. Is this just an aberration of mine or not?
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ Steve, That you took time and responded is very much appreciated. Thoreau said it is a luxury to be understood. Your acknowledgment that I might be on to something certainly is a great feeling! 💯
This is a fun movie though it's can be distracting at times watching Judy's weight fluctuate from scene to scene, especially when they get to the show at the end. I've read the tractor number was supposed to take three days to film and ended up taking three weeks and then they had to patch it together because Judy was having so many problems keeping it together during it.
Even more of a distraction for me was how unhappy Judy looked and sounded during so much of the picture. Still, and with the exception of the hillbilly number with Kelly and Silvers, the musical numbers are terrific.
#SteveHayes Hopefully the director was better, too. During the MGM days, Busby Burkley had NO respect for the actors. He'd run them like he was a drill sargeant. So with a good cast, God willing the director was part of the rooting team.
The reviewer says how Judy matched Gene Kelly step for step. Judy did that with Fred Astaire. In fact with all her dancing partners. Including the films director Chuck Walters when he was a proformer (see Presenting Lily Mars). Judy outshown them all.
