Movie Reaction! | The Witch [2015] | First Time Watching 

When you thought that only the man would be banished.... back in this era, women had no rights (the parents later conversation about selling their daughter off)... many didn't own property and were tied to the fortunes of the father and breadwinner of the family. Also, the tragedy of these less enlightened and extremely religious times is that when people got sick, people would think that the devil had gotten into them or bad things happening to them would be due to the sins they committed. People could be accused of crimes and simply believed because they were upstanding members of community. Tragically, Thomasin's life might have been better living as an independent witch (other than having to eat babies and such) rather than being under the constraints of society then.

The cutting with Caleb was the practice of blood letting. It was believed that letting out impurities in the blood could cure illnesses.

I love this movie. How about that acting by Caleb when he was "sick" in bed? That kid has a future.

If you like this director, I believe you would like “The Lighthouse”. Willem Defoe and Robert Pattinson should have been nominated for Best Actor. Plus Cinematography, art/set decoration, costuming, etc.

Kate was bleeding Caleb when she cut his head on the side. Back then they used bleeding for just about every ailment folks had. It was supposed to leak impurities out of your system. Sickness in reality.

According to folklore about witches/witchcraft, witches used the fat of unbaptized children to make their “flying ointment”; and baby Sam was indeed unbaptized. Witches also had the ability to turn themselves into a hare (the “rabbit” you kept seeing), the power to blight crops and to sour milk. All of which were well represented in the movie. Eggers did his homework!

The twins were actually killed and u can hear them getting killed but they don’t show it ig bc it’s kids getting killed lmao

Have you heard of the new movie called “Megan”? It’s about an Artificial Intelligence doll played (supposedly) by a real doll. Well, it’s not the original. The original is “Morgan” starring Anya Taylor-Joy in the title role. There is an all star cast and Anya was perfect as the A.I. experiment. It pre-dates “VVitch”.

Great reaction bro. Subbed. Btw, my guess is that the twins were being burned in the final coven scene. Folklore from the period states that witches gain the power of flight by allowing fire to consume unbaptized children.

I love that you reacted to this! I find Thomasin's fate very tragic, she truly was innocent, she joined the coven and became what the family accused her of being to survive, so basically Black Phillip got what he wanted and I agree that the chaos in the family was a way to seduce her. It's a like a cult strategizing how to manipulate a person to join them. Some say the twins were in the fire in the ending shot, since in the start the witch needed to apply the baby's flesh and blood to be able to fly in the sky, so a sacrifice is needed somehow.

Wonderful to see more people reacting to this. You simply must check out The Lighthouse as well. Robert Eggers seriously casts the finest actors for his films. Anya Taylor-Joy is a revelation in this movie, and Eggers does the same with Robert Pattinson, Willem Dafoe, Alexander Skarsgard, etc. He is truly a brilliant filmmaker
