The ending of the film kills the hopeless romantic in me every time. It’s so magical, haunting and powerful. Some loves we cannot be with forever, but we can carry our love for them in our hearts for as long as we live. That’s what the ending speaks to me every time. It’s so true to life, sad yet also beautiful. In the end, it is not just a simple tragedy about the love that never could last, but it’s more a magical and grateful tribute and celebration to the love and joy he once had and for which he carries with him forever till the very end. Some loves do not last forever but we can feel joy and gratitude for the fact that they can live forever in our hearts… 💙

Even decades later, this movie is still visually stunning, not unlike Edward’s many works of art. It’s both hopeful and heartbreaking.

This film came out in 1990. The time setting is purposefully vague. It very much has that 1950/60s suburban vibe; Tim Burton was definitely going for that sort of thing; memories of his childhood. But it also had hints that it was not really set as far back as that; the stereo equipment that Jim was trying to steal from his dad was modern. So it was a sort of vague, non-specific setting, and that was on purpose. Timeless- or at least partly so.

Edward didn't kill the inventor, but died of old age. Edward was trying to hold on to the hands the inventor was going to give him.

This is the first Johnny Depp and Tim Burton's movie I saw (I was 9 years old and it was in the original version with french subtitles). That was for our english lesson. The title in french is " Edward Silverhands "

❤❤❤❤❤ I remember when this was played on tv around Christmas time 😊 The Amazing music score is by the famous Danny Elfman, the Tim Burton team.

It's an interesting dichotomy of Edward that he can be so clumsy at times: poking a hole in the water bed, cutting his own face all the time, cutting the microphone power cord, accidentally even hurting those he cares about. (though unintentionally, of course!). Yet when he's in his element: trimming elaborate topiaries, cutting elaborate and creative hairdos for dogs or people, sculpting ice into beautiful forms: that's when he has complete control and mastery over his scissor hands- that's when his greatest liability is also his greatest talent. Yet his greatest talent is also his greatest liability; it cuts both ways (pun intended). It can be like that for artist-types a lot of the time. Other types too, perhaps, but I feel that we artists get it the most. Painters, actors, musicians, writers, etc- when we're in our element, we can be emotive, passionate, empathetic, expressive. But in the "real world," around actual people- strangers, loved ones, we can be incredibly awkward, aloof, inadvertently hurting ourselves or others, without meaning to. I'm sure that Tim Burton wrote the material with that in mind; he is one of the truly 'strange and unusual' creatives of the world. In his artistic life, he's brilliant. His personal life has been more rocky. I can identify with that quite a bit, as can a lot of people. (The further metaphor of the Creative recognizing that he doesn't fit in, and is a danger to those he cares about, living alone, aloof. The mother figure who loved him, he will never see again. The girl who loved him: they will never be together. She has moved on with her life; she has a granddaughter; but she never stopped loving the Artist she can never be with, because he can't live in her world, and she can't live in his. Ouch; right in the feels.)

LOL, Storm always assumes the worst's gonna happen. 😊Can set your watch to it sometimes! JK Maybe I was naive, but I don't think I ever really considered scissors as very dangerous when I was young since the ones in my house as a kid were usually quite dull, in a family that never throws things away, and lived on food stamps for a while, back then and still to this day my mom owns scissors which are more than 20 or even 30 years old. Some which are quite similar in style to Edward's in fact. Having grown up with this film and seeing it for the first time at 9/10 years old, trying to imagine an alternate version where Edward is accidentally or even intentionally cutting fingers or etc off feels so wrong, like R rated Cinderella. This movie is a great combination of interesting and innocence.

Well that is debatable. I like Sleepy Hollow, and What is Eating Gilbert Grape, and Big Fish more than this movie. But this is masterpiece too.

@@biguy617 What's eating Gilbert Grape is a Lasse Hallström movie, not Tim Burton.
