She hated james, when she ended their friendsip. James bullied people which attended slytherin, admired voldemort and practiced dark magic on their classmates. But he was a brave, loyal and honest, hated evil, were absolutely dedicated to his friends, and sacrificed himself for others multiple times - even for his enemy! As well he hated snape because lily was his crush too. Would you bully a little kid, and all of his friends in the world, just because his dad wasn't nice to you?

Literally every Snape fan I've interacted with, as a fellow Snape fan, like Book Snape more than Film Snape. Alan Rickman is a bonus and did a phenomenal acting performance but the vast majority of Snape fans I know (who tend to be older, female/male/non-binary,, and/or queer) prefer Book Snape because of how much depth is given to his personality and his severely abusive background that shaped him and radicalized him into who he was. Book Snape's home life growing up was so bad that an 8 year old Snape would've switched places with Harry because the mistreatment of the Dursleys was still better than how Snape's own parents and his childhood and adolescence treated Snape, by pretty much evey metric. THINK about that. Also, by Hogwarts's standards, Snaoe was one of the top 5 teachers there and a mildly strict one at that. He certainly doesn't beat or physically endanger his students, unlike Book McGonagall and other Hogwarts teachers. By Asian parents/teachers standards, Book Severus Snape is a freaking softie. I went to boarding school in India. I know wgat the fvck I'm talking about. A reason that a lot of Snape fans like Snape, besides the fact that they've actually read the books and critically thought about it (the same of which can't be said of the vast majority of Snape haters), is that it's not hard to sympathize with 1 of the 2 canonical male victims of sexual assault in the series. The reason why Snape hated James Potter is because James was his bully, tormentor, and sexual assaulter. In the books, James publicly sexually assaulted Snape by stripping off Snape's underwear and exposing his genitalia to a baying crowd, which is SA. Sirius and Remus don't even _try_ to deny it or claim that James didn't go through with it. James Potter was the Wizarding version of Brock Turner, exceot worse in every way. Because unlike James Potter, Brock Turner didn't relentlessly bully his SA victim for years before he SA'd them, he didn't do his SA in public, and he certainly didn't get away with it.

@@ajiththomas2465 The difference being it seems James grew up and stopped being an asshole while Snape used his suffering as an excuse to inflict it on others, including becoming the wizard equivalent of a Nazi. I'd also point out when Lilly did try to help him he just shouted slurs at her. Sympathy only gets you so far and Snape walked up to that line, spat on it and then did a long jump over it. Being a victim doesn't give you a pass to victimise others. Also notice for all his flaws, Harry didn't let his abuse make him into an abuser.
@ajiththomas2465
@ajiththomas2465 9 месяцев назад
@@shadenox8164 "James grew up and stopped being an asshole" According to who? Sirius and Remus, the man's best friends and fellow bullies? Sirius and Lupin were James’ best friends and accomplices in the bullying, so asking them to be impartial is like asking an accomplice to a crime to be an impartial witness towards the defense. On top of this, Sirius and Lupin have a history of lying to make themselves look better and make Snape look worse. And JK Rowling already confirmed that James bullied Snape for things like being jealous of his friendship with Lily. Given Sirius and Lupin's bias towards James and proven history of lying to make themselves look better at the expense of the victim, their word doesn't carry a lot of credibility. To believe Sirius and Lupin when they say Snape started is like believing someone who A. was an accomplice to the crime, B. was best friends with the main perpetrator, C. has demonstrated a history of lying and changing stories to make themselves look good, D. there is video evidence to back up the victims claims. We're never given any evidence, other than claims from Sirius and Lupin, who were accomplices to the bullying themselves, that Snape was equally bad as them. Or for that matter, that James Potter had allegedly "grown up and stopped being an asshole". The victim is still the victim, no matter how good they are at self-defense. The fact that Snape actually decided to fight back against someone who’s relentlessly bullied him for years and who sexually assaulted in public and got away with it, does not magically take away Snape’s status as a victim of James’ bullying and tormenting. Whatever mellowing that James had must not have been that major, if Sirius, the biggest dickrider for James there is, could only say that James’ head “deflated a bit”. Not a lot but _a bit_ and that’s coming from the dude’s biggest supporter and defender. The idea that James grew up a lot falls apart when Harry applied the slightest bit of scrutiny and questioning to Sirius and Remus’ claims in their Floo chat. Harry’s questions and how Remus and Sirius chose to answer them are very important. That conversation as a whole shows them victim blaming (eg saying Snape “gave as good as he got”, then hastily switching tactics when Harry points out that they attacked Snape unprovoked bc Sirius said he was bored). It shows them making excuses which Harry calls them out on (saying “he was only fifteen”, aka “boys will be boys”, to which Harry angrily responds “I’m fifteen!”). It shows them contradicting themselves when Harry asks them pointed questions *(saying Lily only dated James when he stopped hexing people for the fun of it, but admitting that James continued bullying Snape and hid it from Lily when Harry presses them). That pokes a hole in the claim that James had truly grown up and matured when Lily started dating him. He didn’t truly change, not really, he simply got better at hiding his flaws from Lily rather than actually correcting his flaws.* Harry isn’t mollified by their excuses, and it disturbs me when readers are. Because everything Remus and Sirius say in that chapter reads like a road map of abuse/bullying/sexual violence apologia, and I’ve heard literally every single one of their excuses used to cover for real life offenders. (cont below) Including “he’s a family guy” and “a good girl like her wouldn’t marry him if he did something like that”. I’m tired of that attitude, because it very easily switches around to “you should have known better”. Somehow the responsibility always ends up on the partner’s shoulders, as if the partner is omniscient. Well, Lily isn’t omniscient. She couldn’t be aware of something that, as Remus and Sirius said, James kept hidden from her and the staff, something he could easily do thanks to his Invisibility Cloak and the Marauder’s Map. She. Did. Not. Know. Her decision to date and marry James reflects absolutely nothing about James’ character. Only James’ actions have any reflection on James’ character. And Lily is NOT the freaking barometer of what is good and bad in the world. She’s not a trophy or an object or a Moral MacGuffin like Excalibur or the MCU Mjolnir. Above her womb is not some inscription that states that “Only the worthy may rest their wand inside her sheath”. Just because she dated and married him is not an indicator that James went through some deep moral change. She could just have shit taste in men. The idea of her being too pure for the earth, the Myth of St. Lily Potter as I call it, was debunked in Snape’s Pensieve memories. I mean, this is the same woman who dated and married the guy who had bullied and sexually assaulted her former best friend. She ain’t the barometer of moral purity is all I’m saying. James and his friends were just bullies who bullied Snape because, as James so eloquently put it, “he existed”. That’s it. It was bullying, not a rivalry. It was so obviously bullying that even the co-bullies Sirius and Remus can only give the most flaccid of excuses that Harry instantly tears apart. Just because Snape fought back doesn’t make the bullying invalid. The victim is still the victim, no matter how good they are at self-defense. As for the claims that James “matured” or “grew up” or “got over it”. Yeah, because _he’s the abuser_ . Of course he got over it. He never had to deal with being a poor mixed kid in a House full of purebloods pressuring him to join what they thought at the time was a political movement, abused at home and “relentlessly bullied” (direct from Remus Lupin’s Pottermore page) for seven years, nonstop. (btw Sirius, while talking about Regulus joining the Death Eaters, mentions that none of them actually knew about anything but the political agenda. If the Purebloods didn’t know, how the hell would Snape?) Abusers “get over it.” They pretend it didn’t happen. Deny it happened. That’s what happens. The abused? Yeah. They don’t get over it. They just don’t. Simply “stopping” the abuse does nothing for the actual harm caused to victims from said abuse. The abuse was done. You don’t get a Medal for simply “not doing” the thing that traumatized a person. Like good for you, you “stopped” harassing someone but this does nothing to negate the harassment you already caused. If a man who had physically and mentally abused their spouse and children for years and then suddenly stopped, is that somehow worthy of a medal? In order to receive redemption one must not only stop the hurtful actions, but try to make up for them/apologize to the victim/attempt reparations. This is why I simply don’t understand the argument that James “changed” while Severus didn’t. James “stopped” bullying Severus (he really just did it behind Lily’s back I think but assuming he did stop) he: - Never once apologized to Severus for any of the traumatic shit he put him through which would have been the bare minimum considering everything that happened. -Never made up for the things he did to Severus via any other means. The fact that the rest of the Marauders never do so either or even attempt to tells a lot about how all 4 of them views what happened to Severus (spoiler alert: they think he deserved it…not exactly remorseful) Therefore, simply “stopping” the abuse means absolutely nothing to me in terms of James “changing” or “maturing” and offers no evidence he even attempted it. Merely got better at hiding it. Lastly, victims are NEVER obligated to forgive their abusers. Even if James had done both of the above that would not obligate Severus to forgive him for the abuse he put him through, especially after the minor sexual assault. People acting like Severus is a “bad” victim for harboring resentment for how James treated him, especially when he never once felt remorse for it is so gross to me. James did not ever change his attitude to Severus. He just got better at hiding it. And Severus has every right to resent James for that.

Yup. He gave her several chances to live. That is the reason why Harry was able to receive Lily's protection. She had the option to live, but chose not to in hopes of protecting Harry. "Choose me, not Harry!" Blood sacrifice only works when you willingly give your life to save others. But if you have no choice in the matter, it doesn't work. Likewise, Harry was able to give that same protection to the students of Hogwarts because he willingly went. He could have ran away or stayed with the other students, but instead went willingly. So really, it was Snape that accidently spelled Voldemort's doom. If he didn't make the request to spare Lily, well...Harry would just be dead. Granted, the prophecy wouldn't have been made in the first place either. They only had the prophecy because Snape was outside the door listening. Any other Death Eater, and Lily would not have been given the choice to live. Which means Voldemort would have just killed Harry. And so prophecy would end there and then (or maybe after killing Neville.)

Characters like Bellatrix and the like were far and away from Neville, while he was exposed to Snape almost daily. Does this excuse Snape? No, he's an asshole that shouldn't have been around kids. But it doesn't make him worse than the literal villains.
@triccele
@triccele Год назад
@@tusherabtahee9839 you cannot chose your fears. The fact that the first thing that came to Neville's mind was Snape speaks volumes. We are not saying he was worst that she, we are saying he became the thing he most feared, even knowing about Bellatrix, he couldb't help but fear him most.
@tusherabtahee9839
@tusherabtahee9839 Год назад
@triccele people don't fear things proportionally to the amount of harm or potential harm to them. It has more to do with proximity and discomfort than anything else. Again, Snape was an asshole that should not have been teaching children. But implying that Nevilles immediate fear of his bullying is darker than the brutal torture of his parents is plain wrong. Harry's worst fear was dementors, which didn't do nearly as much to him as Voldemort did. Also, if you don't remember, Lupin told them to think of their fear and really focus on it, so they were in some control of what the boggart turned into.

That's really an extreme assumption to think that Snape thought Lily would go for him after her family is slaughtered. He was irrational and desperate, begging to at least have the one person he cared about spared, but he had to resort to Dumbledore when he realized Lily would not just allow herself to be spared and Harry be killed. So he had to plead for the whole family to be saved by Dumbledore despite his vitriol for James. He wasn't a great guy. But he did try to do right even if a lot of it ended up being too late, and even if he could never hold in the vile emotions inside him completely. He still hinged everything on his love for Lily, and extended that love as much as he was psychologically able to her son.

Your effort to defend Snap is interesting, but okay. Being roped into being a spy to escape prison isn’t hero status. He literally cried to DD about risking his life spying on Voldy, but didn’t have that same energy spying on The Order for Voldy? Snape died a hero only in Harry eyes, based on what J.K Rowling said in the end and everyone questioned that decision because it didn’t make sense. Snape was abusive to Harry, while proclaiming to “always” have loved his mother. Yet, nothing made him somewhat stop until he saw Harry’s memories. Yet, Sirus and Remus spent the least amount of time with Harry and Lily knew he was more like his mother than father. Snape spent more time with the girl he was in love with and still joined a racist wizard group hell-bent on taking away muggle-born rights and thought nothing of it. He spent more time with Harry and again only clamined him as Lily’s son after he saw him being abused. Meanwhile, Lily was never abused but deeply love by everyone even her sister until she became a witch. Snape was un-hinged in the books and nothing that man/boy did made sense.

Well, all he really said was that he asked Voldie to spare Lily's life. It was Dumbi who began to find out why not everyone and Snape remained silent. I don't blame him for this. Lily is his old friend and love. James is a bully. I don’t know whether he thought or didn’t think about his husband and child. It doesn't make much difference to the survival of the Potter family. It is ridiculous to assume that if Voldie was asked by one of his minions, he would not touch the child. He would rather use Crucio or Avada on them. What puzzled me most about this scene was that Dumbi, when asked by Snape to save Lily or her entire family, responded with something like “what will I get in return.” Not expected. Seriously? He's been warned that his people are being hunted, and he acts like it's too much for him to save them. Moreover, Snape promises him anything for saving the Potters. What does Dumbi do? Tbh, I doubt Rowling had Neville's backstory figured out in book 3. She probably just thought, "Snape would be perfect for the boggary to become. Now, which student is most likely to be afraid of Snape?", and figured Neville would do. Wasn't meant to have any deep insight behind it. Of course, it was probably just the greatest fear in the moment. And only something they could actively think of and worry about. Most of the class would probably be more terrified if they saw Voldemort (or Sirius Black) standing right in front of them, but because they didn't think about it, the boggart had no idea. For Neville, he had just come from a bad class with Snape. So of course that would be all he could think of in the moment. If he just had a class with hippogriffs, it probably would have been that instead. But yeah, Snape's bullying in the books were too far. I like to just headcanon most of those incidents away because they make Snape feel too 2D. Just a trope basically, such as the evil teacher from Matilda. It doesn't really fit the rest of Snape's character when he tries to protect his students or defends Hermione when she is called a mudblood. Maybe if we assume that all of the scenes of him bullying is the worst he has ever done? 4-5 bad incidents across six years isn't good, but much better than insulting/threatening his students regularly. I dunno.

I never understood people who drool over Snap. He he was a greasy haired bully of a teacher.

My favourite Snape book moment was when Hermione’s teeth grew due to a misdirected hex and he said that he saw no difference, leaving Malfoy unpunished

The book also made me not particularly like Dumbledore either. Snape should never have been a teacher he wasn’t fit for it at all. He completely favored his house and allowed his students to get away with a lot. I mean sure he was powerful but a good teacher no. The only reason he was is so Dumbledore could keep an eye on him which isn’t a great reason to allow him to taunt and ridicule students he doesn’t like.

@@lscales6131 but isn't one of the arguments of the books that Dumbledore has difficulty finding good teachers? The only time Snape seemed like a normal teacher was when death eaters overrode the school.

@@raina2319 no he has a tough time keeping DADA teachers.other than that nothing is ever said in the books about having a tough time finding other teachers. In fact it seems other than that specific class all other teachers were there for a while.

treating an 11 year old like shit well into adulthood, tormenting and bullying neville, "I see no difference" to hermione in front of her classmates and friends, threatening to poison nevilles toad, biased grading and point awarding/removing in order to even the scores from when he was a student just to name a few, hes definitely a piece of work

he didnt even just threaten to poison trevor he *tried* to and then took points away when hermione gave him an antidote

a piece of *shit Rickman made him likeable, whereas I would run over Book!Snape with a truck, back up over him, and then run him over again for good measure.
