Don't listen to some of the thoughtless comments posted on YT! Don't ever lose your curiosity about the history of this great land, regardless of the technology and style of the era. It is a priceless window on the past! Keep being curious and don't be afraid to ask questions about our history.

@ preciousmumma... That's actually very interesting. I'm only 25 so I never knew that. It's crazy how much times have changed. It never would have even occured to me that people used to go to movie theaters to get non-paper news. It makes sense though.

The way they used to speak back then is so different than they do now. Tempo, accent, articulation, tone... it's very distinct. So, does anyone know the specific name or what kind of UK English or American English accent this particular radio announcer is speaking in?

Mid Atlantic was the fancy way of talking…
@phatman808
@phatman808 3 месяца назад
Everyone will tell you it's mid atlantic. It's not! Everyone just repeats what they've heard/read from other people without actually comparing this with mid atlantic speakers. You can easily hear the difference with actual mid atlantic accents, this is similar but seems to have developed specifically for radio and film voiceovers and news due to the low fidelity mics, recording, and transmission equipment of the day.

Correct not non rhotic/mid altantic baloney. This narrator sounds relatively unaffected

Not only that, 'mumma'- at one time, there was at least one theater in New York that did nothing but show newsreels from the various studios [Movietone, Pathe (later Warner-Pathe), Paramount, Universal, Hearst's "Metrotone" (later known as "News of the Day"), and "The March Of Time"]. The name of the famous theme that began each reel was "World Events".

The narration scripts for these old newsreels were written in a very hokey style. This kind of script-writing wouldn't be allowed in a TV news organization today.

In response to preciousmumma: These old newsreels are interesting, but while this was the only way most people could see moving pictures of world events, they were produced & edited for entertainment & propaganda purpose. Not that there was no truth in them, but they shouldn't be taken too seriously. TV as we know it, with broadcast programs & TV sets in homes, came in 1948. Newsreels were largely supplanted by TV news in the fifties, but survived till 1967. Gratitude is a good habit for all.

This was likely from the late Spring or early Summer of 1940, given the invasion of Norway, the second year of the 1939/40 New York World's Fair, and the 1940 Deb Ball.

I don't understand why you have to be offensive to teenagers, I'm a teenager and I just came here to watch this video and I can't without seeing someone writing a comment directed towards me when I haven't done anything wrong. I know what you meant but there's no need to be generalist. Also what's wrong with modern movie's, who cares if there fiction, we live once, why not dream a little and explore the imagination, or we could just spend our entire lives thinking on a basic level, then die.

You know what I like about Movietone News? No punditry. REPORTING. It's dramatic of course, but the narrator NEVER lets us know HIS opinion.
@MelSnyder
@MelSnyder 7 лет назад
You're kidding, of course. They were very jingoistic and idealistic. Read up on the narrator, Lowell Thomas: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lowell_Thomas
@toddrainer6542
@toddrainer6542 7 лет назад
It WAS propaganda. As to Jingoistic... are you sure you understand the word? It really can't be applied to a new agency or broadcaster. A government can be Jingoistic. Plus, idealistic is not punditry - it may be pie in the sky, but it's not telling you what to think.

Today people go to movies dressed like bums, text and speak on cell phones. We get our news from the liberal media that seldom tells all sides of the story. Boy, I wish it was the 1920s or 1930s.
