I’m moving from Edmonton to Calgary. My experience is Edmonton’s housing market is very slow and Calgary is very fast. Edmonton is a great family city for average income earners (40k-120k). You get newer homes and nicer looking suburbs because they have newly constructed amenities. My house in Edmonton is 2,400 square feet and new in a moderate new build neighbourhood for 650k. The house I’m moving into is 25 years old 1,800 square feet and 750k. Calgary is great for the mountains and professionals. If you are an average income family who wouldn’t use the mountains, Edmonton. If you are a high earning professional who likes the outdoors, Calgary. At the end of the day Oil and Agriculture run the province. Edmonton has the oil and gas services companies, Calgary is the headquarters for the oil producers. It’s very much a blue collar (Edmonton) and white collar (Calgary). Tech is re-locating to Calgary because of our low tax rate and better living conditions for employees vs Toronto and Vancouver.

Great breakdown. Both cities are great and it depends on what is needed in a city!

@@learnerents2861 I think in my opinion is really good. There are many universities and colleges, such is the university of Alberta, grant macewan university, Concordia university, and much more. You also can go on line for info and you will find it. I remember that every city has the good and not so 👍 it's like that no matter where. I truly love my city it has everything one wants. Hope I helped.

I spent 10 years in Edmonton, and a bit more in Calgary. Unless your career takes you to Edmonton (ie some trades pay a lot more there), Calgary is better. Better downtown. Better road system. Mountain get always. Cleaner. And, the winter is much milder. 8:40

I have lived in both - first Edmonton for over 20 years and then Calgary for 10 years. My mistake was not moving to Calgary sooner. Being an hour away from the mountains is a huge plus for hiking, for skiing or just for a drive. But there is much more to Calgary than that - better LRT, better airport access to the rest of the world, and closer to Vancouver. However, one thing that Edmonton has that is better than Calgary is the University of Alberta - rated 18th in North America compared to 58th for the University of Calgary. As it is, I am in California now for over 20 years, and while I miss being in Calgary in spring, summer and fall, I do not miss the winter and freezing almost all the time. There is no rust on my vehicle, have never plugged it in, and have never had to drive on snowy roads unless traveling to Lake Tahoe in winter or driving to Canada also in winter.

Good information to help those on verge of moving. Other considerations would be schools, employment opportunities, rental costs and weather.

I have lived in both cities and prefer Edmonton. With our ring road system (not perfect) is pretty good. I also visit the river valley in numerous areas from Devon through to Fort Saskatchewan and it’s amazing. They are both good cities though. Calgary is always crazy windy. I lived in NW.

Edmonton public transit is horrible. Since the latest "update" it has turned all commutes from 20-30mins into ~1 hour commutes with transfers. We also have a bad meth problem and it shows in our transit.

Calgary is by far better for a cook/chef. Why? Because (when I lived there) Calgary has about twice as many restaurants per capita than Edmonton, and they are far more interesting for both the customers and the staff that work there.

If you're moving from the GTA or Lower Mainland and are considering either Calgary or Edmonton, then Calgary is the clear winner as the housing costs are more in Calgary than Edmonton, but are way lower in relative to the GTA or Lower Mainland. If you're moving from Winnipeg or Saskatchewan then Edmonton might be the better option as it's a much larger city than those two cities but the housing costs are much lower than Calgary. Calgary has the better scenery as its closer to the rocky mountains, Calgary Airport flys to much more major international destinations, Calgary weather is milder,...so if you can afford Calgary than I'd suggest Calgary over Edmonton.
@ChamberlainGroup

Good points, however those from Winnipeg or Saskatchewan are still looking here too. It really depends on what you’re wanting in a city.

@@learnerents2861 Edmonton is cheaper for living so that will help a lot of international students budgeting their expenses. Calgary is the main airport in Alberta if you travel by plane a lot to international destinations than that is a large consideration as well. I know a UK couple that used to live in Edmonton that moved to Calgary because of the Airport due to the layovers to and from Calgary when connecting to Edmonton.

I would say Edmonton has much more - remember, Calgary is at about 3800-4000 foot altitude vs Edmonton at about 2700 feet, and because of that altitude the air is thinner and cooler - something mosquitos don't like.
