I grew up in Chicago during the 80s and 90s I was born in 1980 so I'm 42 but I was just like John but I lived in the inner city in some bad neighborhoods but I used to ride my bike starting around 8 years old all over Chicago I fished the Chicago River back then many times but couldn't ever catch anything because it was in horrible shape back then and very polluted and many bodies of murder victims from the gangs when I was 9 I seen my first large gathering gang fight that's how they used to do it back then they would call out the other gangs and meet at a location at the edge of their territory that day their was like 200 of them fighting with bats and pipes and knives and then someone on the losing side pulled a gun and shot 15 of the other guys the 90s had the most murders and violence all over the country but I loved to fish and used to fish lake Michigan a lot and used to go to Marquette Park and McKinley Park and fish those pounds I would sometimes be riding home 3-5 miles or more with a stringer full of fish but as soon as I was old enough I left Chicago and traveled all over the country fishing and working at manpower and other day jobs to support myself and eventually ended up north east Kansas where I have stayed since now been here 22 years and have a family and the fishing is great but I was on the road 3 years from 17-20 it was the best time of my life I went from Chicago to the west Coast first to California and The all up the coast and then i wanted to fish in every state after that I usually stayed in a state 2-4 weeks depending on the state I traveled then east from Washington and zig zaged all the way to Maine and fished all the states in between I then went down the coast to the southern tip of Florida and stayed in Florida the longest like 3 months then went back west zig zagging the southern states I timed all this with the seasons I stayed south in the winter and North in the summer but any way i traveled all the way back to the west coast to southern California to the ocean and then headed back north east I was going to return to Chicago but I stopped in Lawrence Kansas on my way home and met a woman who I fell in love with and who has been my wife for 20 years now I never returned to Chicago which probably saved my life because as much as I tried to stay out of the gangs I would have probably eventually had to join just like my cousins and uncles even my father before he was killed also 3 of my cousins and many friends all killed I've only been to Chicago once since i left just to take my wife and kids to see the place where I grew up and to see downtown and the lake and get some good food the food is the only things I miss all of my family live in Illinois but all have moved at least 2 hours south from Chicago but if I were you and you live in the inner city I would leave that shit hole the violence is bad the cost of living is over priced for rental houses in crap neighborhoods your paying well over 1,000 usually more than that a month taxes are high and gun laws are shitty which only hurts the law abiding citizens because criminals just steal them or get them from other states for instance were I live the cost to rent a nice house is between 700-1200 some more but those are huge houses with 5 or more bedrooms and multiple bathrooms but a nice 3 bedroom 2 bathroom house will run around 1,000 and the city has about 100,000 people it's a university town with the university of Kansas here the Jay hawk basketball team is one of the best every year and has been a long time so the demographics are between 75-80% white 6-7% Hispanic 5% black 6% Asian 2.5% native American and 6% two or more races violence is very low and no gang activities so it's worth the rent here and also plenty of work and only 40 minutes from Kansas City and lots of places to fish close by and many more within 1-2 hours sorry for all this typing told my life story but the mention of the Chicago River brought memories backi would leave the city if you live in the inner city unless that's what you like but there's so many better and beautiful places to live just look up how many people are leaving the shit hole cities like Chicago and Los Angeles they are moving to Texas and Florida and Colorado and other places because these states offer so much more than Chicago
