Having read through some comments, I just wanna say that while I do agree your approach to things isnt authentic or typical of European cities, I wouldn't get too caught up in the comments. Theres a million European cities skylines series on RU-vid that showcase authentic European cities and your approach is what makes this series different. So keep up the good work and make the city your own!

When the city is expanding, remember that they didn't just go from fields to "let's put up a new wall/canal". There would be a period in between where the area got filled with shacks, tanneries, animal dealers, and all the temporary-ish businesses that took up too much space (or smelled too bad) to be inside the walls. When they expand, those things get pushed outside again and the new permanent buildings fill up a street pattern that was mostly laid down by animal lots and shantytowns. If you get that mix correct, of underlying chaos with a layer of order (not underlying orderly streets with a dusting of chaos), almost anything you do after that will look natural or "right".

Coming along nicely. I love the choice of the Dutch canals! Two comments regarding the train situation. Many larger old cities in Europe have a city station which is locate near the historical core and a newer station a bit farther away. Often they had a city line running from the old station to the new. You could leave your tram line around the old core but actually have it stop at a city train station rather than going all the way out to the through station. Also, generally passenger and cargo stations are not placed together. Too much traffic and too much noise. While the smaller cities/stations in Europe often combine both (because they only have a single station and don't get that much traffic), the larger places keep them separate. The cargo stations are generally located a bit more away from the city or residential areas. Nice choice on the Baden Baden station -- only 45 minutes away from my home town... :)
@JamJarzz
@JamJarzz 3 года назад
It could be the case that the new station was built because the old one was destroyed in the WW2. Then maybe the old rail network was turned into the tram road. Could add some dynamic history and character to the city.
@JainZar1
@JainZar1 3 года назад
Often the cargo stations in the cities developed because one large industrial company built themselves a rail line to their facilities. Around those, the rail cargo hubs developed. Most rail cargo hubs are also located next to marshalling yards, which have the least environmental impact in an industrial district.

Depends entirely which cities you mean and how old the Old Town is and how much the city expanded in the first half of the 19th century. The railroads have change so much throughout the past century. Stations and railroads have been build and destroyed (for example because the roads turned out to be less efficient and well used than they thought). It's really interesting though, the history of railroads in Europe. :)

A canal leading to the train station (particularly the cargo station) would make sense. While I doubt it would serve this purpose anymore, historically, the canal could have been a major freight-hub in the past, but now is nothing more than a part of the scenery.

really amazing change to the canals. as an observation, a town/city like this would have built up over hundreds of years. i think the city match the shape of the ancient core and soften out into the modern features as it radiates out with things like the train station perhaps cutting into the existing structure as they were first added 50, 100, maybe even 150 years prior when people were not as interested in preserving what was there before. modern items i think would tend to contrast with whats there, even 'old' things like trams. the most accurate thing might be to actually build the radiating sections out from the ancient core and then going in and inserting the more modern things. depending on how 'modern' they were, they would either slice through, go over, or go around depending on the value of the item or the sensibilities in place when the item would have gone in. as for that triangle, there is a fortification structure in game. perhaps that jutting into the river to protect the city with a fortified area there that perhaps became city services and museums over time?

if this series does continue then maybe a commuter rail route from "central" down to the canal/riverside/oldtown, from a transport perspective it provides a faster albeit regional connection to the ot compared to the tram and from a lore standpoint, it makes sense: the railway company built the central station as far out as possible (in reason) to save on land costs and then built a small spur down to the oldtown/river for better cargo/passenger connection *in the 1850s (when rail transport started taking off)* and then the cargo traffic was suspended in the 60s because trucks exist HOWEVER, on that last point w/ the 60s, it doesnt make as much sense in germany/switz/austria. i mean they use small electric switcher (shunter in europe) locos for local transport thanks for reading :)

The city is looking fantastic, channel your inner Biffa and do the tram-about, they keep things running smooth and the earlier you put it in means it is easier to plan around it and make it a feature of its own. Love the idea of the canal/city wall look, it gave me an idea that in times past with the advent of the railway that maybe a spur of the canal was put in to run good to the city and as time has gone on the canal was replaced by a road so sections along it could be decorated to reflect that. Lots of ideas for my own city! 👍👍

So maybe that one the other side as you mentioned? Also, I strongly recommend not trying to go with any "authenticity". Just "fantasy" map it up. Use stuff for inspiration, certainly! Great video! The detail in the train stations was awesome! If you added additional canals to the old town, I would suggest using smaller ones and maybe go for a Venice feel, where they transport goods around on boats. I don’t think you can do that in CS but we can use our imagination. I would not use “rings” or “layers” of canals bc that would be unrealistic. Back in these times it would be a massive city center that had expanded as the population grew from the old town and crops would be grown way outside the city and transported in using carts. Right now the city has a Kings Landing feel to it and would be cool to see it continue in that direction. Where you had a wall around the Main city then another wall surrounding the city’s expansion.

I really like the look of the new trainstation. Espacially the direkt road to the citycenter and the straight corridor to the river. This would be a great opportunity for another green strip or garden in addition to your planned one at the chanal, maybe in combination with a fancy palace. For the streets i think it would be better to have them more focused on the Citycenter itself. Because obviously most Citys grew outwards ring by ring. So maby build some artearials coming form the gates outward first then and develope some arears around them. Also this a factor that would make this city very european is the time. While the cities expanded over time, the building and planingstyles changed too. So while you have this lovley messy old town center from the medival period, the next layer would be build in the early modern era. Still messy but more complex. Next some nice triangular vicctorian districts and at last modern, suburban neighborhoods.

The tram loop at the Station could become sort of a Plaza, surrounded by small Shops. I'd vote against a tram-a-bout: not needed for traffic (if they jam, then there are too many on the line) and it would have to be too large to work effectively.

I subscribed for more of this series! If I had to suggest something: more canals and and old industrial park next to the rail station connected with a few old buildings. I would imagine this town started as a capital in a small European Kingdom. The canals and buildings give that feeling and then in the beginning of the 1800s the industrial revolutions rolled around they added steampowered factories in the outskirts of town which was later connected to the outside towns with railways. With that in mind I would maybe add an industrial complex with some smokestacks next to the cargo trainstation which is then maybe connected with a canal to the city, meaning the railway track would have to cross the canal. The placement of the newer part makes sense as that might have just been farms and such which later vanished to make room for an expanding city. Great work

Just some thoughts that came across my mind: Why are you putting a tram stop after a junction? This might lead to traffic issues. For example when two trams are right after each other and the first is waiting at the tram stop and the other one behind it in the middle of the junction. Why not create a kind of stadtbahn or metrotram. Take a look at Köln(Cologne?) or Antwerp for example. In the suburbs it is a tram, in the city centre a metro. You could use the arterial or create a LRT lane next to it. And then go underground and make a stop in the old town and maybe go across the water? I really enjoy this serie. Cant wait for the next episode. Loved the train lay-out. Much love!

Still watching, but have to say, I was so sad when you "fixed" that broken piece of the road. No road is perfectly curved or straight in Europe. Even our biggest sweeping arterials going through the city, getting the most traffic are usually made up of shorter, "broken" straights pieced together as best as they could make it. I really hope you manage to break your perfectionism for this series and do way more "broken" or bad road layouts, to get that authentic feeling.

My approach to European cities are essentially to set up a rough ex-city wall (usually bounded by coasts, canals, larger roads, cliffs, railroads, or some other obstruction), and then 'wing' the rest of it, trying to create straight-ish roads with few dead ends. It's not usually roads that are necessarily curved, but more that sense of imperfection and unplanned design

It's interesting seeing your take on a European city as a European (Brit). It's coming along nicely and does remind me of a couple of places I've been to, so you're on the right track. So I have some suggestions if that is alright to make. Firstly on the town spreading out from the old walled section, I can recommend some places to look at as real world examples that are close to what you're going for. Starting with Conway, a walled town in Wales. Conway is a beautiful place situated on the north Wales coastline, complete with a castle and one of the best preserved medieval walls in Britain. Since then the town has spread out and up the hillside it sits nestled against, offering splendid views down to the cost even if most of the housing is council houses from the 60s and 70s. There is also a rail connection in Conway which features a box shield bridge, and also cut through a section of the wall by rejigging it into an arch over the tracks whilst maintaining the crenellations, before cutting into the hillside where the station is in a cutaway before the tracks carry on underground and inland away from Conway. Honestly just a great place to look at for inspiration. Another place to look at would be the city of Lincoln as well, it's different in that most of its walls are gone, but they still have an effect in defining the old town and how the city spills down the hill away from the castle and the old town. Secondly for the trams. So I have two suggestions here, firstly is if possible to try and find tram tracks with grass under them, that's fairly common for separated tram tracks in Europe and it also has a quieting effect on the trams as well, not by much but every bit helps. For this I'd suggest trying to find some Dutch tram tracks. And then if possible try to have your tram roads also have cycle lanes, again something that is common in Europe and just offers more options to get around, but also allows cyclists away from cars which are dangerous to them. Lastly on the canals, again I'd suggest looking to British cities, specifically Manchester, which I know would sound a bit odd but Manchester has a lot of canals. British cities started the industrial revolution on the backs of canals, and a lot of really old factory buildings still remain by canal sides to this day in a lot of British cities, especially those in the North. Apart fom that though, keep going with your own approach, whilst these are things I think would help you, you by no means need to incorporate them. Your outside perspective is what is making this interesting as you're learning as you go and discovering what makes our cities so interesting to everyone, even the people that live in them. All the best to you as you continue with this project.

be careful because the freight station will generate a lot of traffic in addition to the normal station. it will be necessary to put one-way roads to manage the flow and maybe widen certain roads. And not on the connection in the corner in front of the underground road, it might get stuck at some point. the rails are at the top otherwise, and if you overtake the railway line to the limit, make it underground so as not to have two bridges.

@Muenni

I gotta say, I really like that one canal that so clearly serves defensive purposes - a second or more don't really make as much sense in that context. Plus, it's refreshing to not go all out on canals but leave it simple. I also wouldn't put another old town on the other side of the river. It's so wide, the two sides might have been connected by ferries only for a long time. Whether the new bridge then spurred the development of a new "eixemple" to accomodate the growing population or an industrial harbor, I don't know. Both seem interesting, offering very different aesthetics of the riverbank. On the other hand, there might have been two medieveal towns on either side of the river, like Buda and Pest, but they wouldn't have to be straight across from each other. Maybe the other old town used the lake down the river, or sits at the merger with that smaller river upstream? Or maybe there was a hill that made a prime spot for a city? There's so many great options! I know you'll come up with something fantastic. :)

The old town is really coming along nicely. But outside of old town, don't forget to make use of your road layouts knowledge. I think adding some random short curves to the main/arterial roads would make the city look a bit more European.

I’d Remember that in European cities public transport is king, so the land next to the train station is normally extremely expensive and well developed. Also that they are not car-centric AT ALL (especially compared to the US), driving into and around downtown is normally actively discouraged, and wasting prime real estate on surface level parking is extremely rare- normally parking is underground or in multi-storey parking garages, hidden away behind buildings; if there is parking at all. also, the road layout is often designed to make driving slower than biking or taking the tram etc- car routes are often circuitous and slow
@roqsteady5290
@roqsteady5290 3 года назад
I think it is more that, in many old towns, the road layout preceded the car and so there are problems trying to route vehicles through narrow streets. My own city, Exeter, is a good examples of that. It is noticeable that the parts of Exeter that got bombed out in the war are much more conducive to vehicles.
@Secretlyalittleworm
@Secretlyalittleworm 3 года назад
@@roqsteady5290 ah okay, I was mainly referencing the Netherlands, I should’ve said that. What I was more trying to hint at is the cultural difference between European cities (generally), and American cities; in Europe Car traffic, and car orientated development, is seen as more of a necessary evil, that needs to be Mitigated/removed. Whereas, in the US because there is practically no alternative to a car, you end up with car hell-scapes like Los Angeles and Houston. Sadly, American cities did used to have dense and walkable Cities, that were crisscrossed with trolley and tramlines- The differences is that they tore it all up in favour of highways and surface level parking lots. probably the main reason Europe didn’t do that to the same degree, is just because there wasn’t the money for it after World War II. Because of this, Europe continued to develop Its density, and public transport infrastructure; whereas The US just threw all their established public transport infrastructure in the bin. It’s funny how urban planners in the 50s and 60s in Europe really lamented the fact that they couldn’t essentially demolish huge swathes of Historic downtowns, Thank God we didn’t have the money for it.

If you are going for the Organic European city look then you are going about it pretty well. I know that a medium sized city close to where I live also has the train station pretty far away from the old town city center. So this actually reminds me of when I go visit that city. Pretty nice.

Still really enjoying what you're doing here. From my own understanding of history and then more limited understanding of the game, I think the biggest hurdle is that the game is designed around roads designed for cars, which historically are probably one of the most recent developments concerning transportation, even more recent than trains. Because of this, it's hard to start the way cities in Europe did, ie oldest first. I think you're doing a good job given the constraints of the game, and look forward to seeing how it develops. I really like the historical narrative that you're creating around Resfeber - I think you could even lean more into to this and let that in some ways inform your design decisions going forward. Regardless of where you take it, I'm along for the ride!

You need bicycle parking. It's a thing! And bike roads separate from car roads. At Elsinore, which I mentioned in an earlier comment, two forts face off against each other to control passage through the water. One side is Denmark; the other is Sweden. So we can expect another old town on the other side, but having a different vibe.

A walled settlement with moat often had additional secondary fortications on the outer bank of the moat (the German term is "Wallanlage" or "wall complex") - often with star-fort-like bastions - that were retained as city parks in later years- great examples are the cities of Lübeck, Bremen, and Regensburg. It would be great if you could implement a park that reflects this historical useage. I really like how your station turned out, it's just a shame the asset isn't modular - the best thing about modular stations is that you can decide which platforms accept intercity trains and which don't. That helps prevent major congestions because you can separate local and intercity trains using the station - unfortunately, multi-platform non-modular stations like this one (or the vanilla ones) can clog up extremely quickly, which is why I avoid them like the plague, even genuinely beautiful ones like this one. Keep it up, you're doing great!

By the way: I use the “Terraforming Network” and place them just outside the quay (lower them into the water) if there is a road close to the quay. Otherwise there is that slope of ground sticking out the quay which is nasty to terraform. This way you can easily lower the ground for more beautiful quays. 😉

At least a partial second canal ring would be nice, it's likely that in a strategic location like the end of a river, the city would once have been a star Fort and the second canal Ring would be shaped accordingly (such as the canal in Leeuwarden). Typically train stations were built wherever the edge of the city was in the early 1800s, so generally any development between the station and the town centre would be older than that, and wouldn't have lots of modern features like straight roads and green belts, unless the city was heavily bombed during the second World War and rebuilt afterwards (like with Coventry). So while the radial roads might be straight boulevards built for military parades, I don't think the rest of the inner city would be so geometric. (although there are obviously exceptions to this such as Barcelona)

I found an nice alternate way of fixing edgy networks is removing a node, the system will do its best to smooth the curve with whats left and there is no move-it fine motorics needed; one might add extra nodes before and after the operation. And I must say you are extremely intolerant of any imperfections on your lawn, you probably level down anthills, I am deeply shocked, though it does look good.
