Moving your shop stinks, but using French cleats makes it a lot easier to set up quickly and make changes. Here is a not-particularly-brief look at how I set up my new (extremely old, slightly dangerous) garage, and I answer some questions I've received on my French cleat tool wall, my drill-press table, my folding assembly table, my sheet-good storage and more. At the end we'll even whip up a simple "F" clamp rack that holds a lot of clamps in a small space. I hope touring my shop gives you some ideas or inspiration for your own. Now let's get to building!

The elephant in the room (because I know I will rightly get comments on this): The reason I didn't paint first (or after) is because in my head this space is temporary and I'm going to tear it down and put up a new garage. However, in retrospect, I probably should have painted it anyway. Making your space look as good as possible really does make it more enjoyable to work in, so lesson learned. When I finally put up a new garage it will be all kinds of clean and painted. :)

Yeah, unfortunately a lot of the walls wouldn't even handle sanding without completely crumbling. It's just gross.

Great video. This might not be true with dry erase paint, but sometimes more dry erase marker and then immediate wipe off takes the residue off of old/stubborn dry erase pen marks.

Nice David, thanks for the tip, I will definitely try that. There was such a.. ahem..'marked' difference with the black marker that I tossed it immediately. But I'll see if that helps with the others

I've been wanting to see that drill press shelf since I spotted it on the wall in the Octopus videos. I thought it was a set up so it could mount on the side of your bench, but I can see why you might want it to be stationary. I have a similar one, and it's not light.

Yeah, I think they're just too heavy to move around. I made it in my old shop to store my planer under, and in this one I've just got a scrap bin. Most of the time a dedicated cabinet makes more sense, but in some cases you might want it wall-mounted, and this is one way to do it.

I grew up in the grunge era, and can still rock some flannels when the need arises. Also, those walls are literally flaking apart, and it's not as simple as just painting over them. But yes, it would look better if they were, no doubt.
