I have a couple of nucs that I can not seem to sell that has 2 supers on them and are packing in the nectar fast. Gotta for sure get them some more space soon. Would put them into an 8 frame I have 5 extra double deep hives worth but I want them to keep on building so they can make extra for my weak Nucs to go into winter with.

Sounds like a good plan.

You are braver than me - I never go into the bee yard without at least a veil on. It looks like you have a bunch of black plastic frames - I agree with your thinking - they are probably stronger than wood. When you purchase in bulk - they are the same cost of purchasing the wood frame components and plastic foundation.. So considering the time savings (no assembly), and that they are stronger and will last longer than their wooden competition - it makes sense to go with the plastic. (considering the stinging possibilities.... shorts aren't a good idea in my book.........)

I've been stung everywhere a dude can be stung, lol. I know the risk. Yeah plastic frames are a real boon to a sideliner operation like mine.

@@BKBees Really sorry to hear that you've been "stung everywhere a dude can be stung".... I"m trying to avoid that one One thing that I've noticed though - the more bee stings that you get - the less they bother you.

Brett, are these nucs splits that you made earlier this spring? If so were they walk away splits or did you have Queens to put in them? They look good!
@BKBees
@BKBees 3 года назад
Yes. Some got swarm cells, some got grafted cells.

Bret, why didn't you shake out the bees from the drone laying queen hive before you gave them the eggs and larvae to make a new queen? If the queen is still in that hive will they still make a new one?
@BKBees
@BKBees 3 года назад
Not sure why I'd shake them out? You might be confusing drone layer with laying workers, but even with laying workers the "shake 'em out because they can't fly" thing is a myth. I just gave them some material with which to make a queen, and boosted the population. They'll get started on cells right away.

@@BKBees Thanks, that's what I was thinking. That no matter if it was a queen or laying worker they would not fly back. Good to know.

I have a question I started with bees late last year around August my two hives come out of winter good but the boxes are heavy I'm thinking about going to a smaller hives and when it's time for the honey flow slide a couple of the boxes together put Queen excluders on top of the boxes then put 10 frame or 8 frame boxes on top for Honey boxes that way maybe only have to move them twice wants to put them on and wants to check the bees then with any luck last time to pull honey and I imagine that would be three times what do you think
@BKBees
@BKBees 3 года назад
I think that's a lot of extra effort. I think you'll be better off just keeping them where they are, every hive has their own honey box or boxes.
@martenapperloo1055
@martenapperloo1055 3 года назад
So tell me how is it that you can put Apivar strips in your hive this time of year and still be able to consume the honey, I thought you had to wait until honey flow is over
@BKBees
@BKBees 3 года назад
We aren't taking honey from any of those. Notice there are no honey boxes on any of those hives.

I appreciate seeing how you deal with the "duds". Gives me the chance to see how ya deal with setbacks. Not so much interested idnseeing everything running perfectly as I wouldn't learn as much. keep it coming

Is the spilt possible in winter ?
@BKBees
@BKBees 3 года назад
Not here. Not sure if anywhere has drones flying all winter. The drones are the big thing, other than the cold. Find out if you have drones flying, if you do, you can split.

Nobody told you that you can’t work bees wearing dark clothes! The bees figured you did not know so they cut you a break! Seriously I have never had a problem with that except for when I wear my watch, which has a dark brown band. If the bees are testy the invariably go for that.
@BKBees

I get lots of comments like that but my experience is like yours, if I'm calm the bees are usually calm, regardless of what color I'm wearing. Of course I have the jacket handy and only attempt it on nice days when I can take my time.
