Today's the day that I'm moving my ducks to their new duck house. But one of the ducks has gone missing.
I've come to the realization that my life is an untitled goose game. Come play with me as I do my chores on our goose farm. I also try to get the geese and ducks to be friends.

About Gold Shaw Farm: Gold Shaw Farm is more of a farm-in-progress than an honest-to-goodness farm. Our dream is that someday we are able to transform our 150+ acre parcel of land into a regenerative and productive homestead and farm.

I love that you and your wife are just casually hanging in the duck house, lol. That coyote had some balls coming in the afternoon. Must have been desperate for food.

I agree that you should get a livestock guardian dog. We were having a lot of predator issues when we first started our farm this spring. We have ducks, chickens, guinea fowl and a turkey at the moment. After trying various fencing/housing options and having the predators figure out how to break/bypass them, we ended up getting a puppy. Even with him still being very young, technically too young to really be counted on to do his job solo, just having a dog outside around the house and birds almost 24/7 seems to have solved our predator problems entirely. Knock on wood, we haven't had a predator loss since we got him. We went with an anatolian shepherd. Make sure you get an LGD breed that was born on a farm to working parents. Comparing our LGD pup to the other 'guard dog' house pup we have, you can really tell the anatolian grew up for the first 10 weeks with experienced outdoor dog parents, and around livestock. He hunts rodents, barks at even aerial predators, and is on patrol all night. He's been well worth his purchase price and feed bill.

Important to note. Our local conservation agent told us that lone dogs are often lured by the coyotes. One will come out and get the dog to chase then lead him into the pack where the guard dog becomes the coyotes dinner. Just be aware.

@@FarmFreshIB Yes, that is true. We don't have a lot of coyote pressure in my area. If you're dealing with a lot of coyotes get a big dog, and you may need to run multiple dogs. A full grown anatolian is typically over 100 lbs, while a coyote is more like 40-50. Even if they managed to lure an anatolian, I don't think they'd have much luck taking it down. Lone dogs getting lured is more of a concern for smaller breeds/puppies. What can happen even with large breeds though, is that the coyotes lure a lone dog away from the livestock, and then some steal a meal while the dog is off chasing the part of the pack doing the luring. You will have to experiment to see if a single dog works in your context, just be aware of the concerns and do plenty of research first.

@@deannelson9565 it can be mitigated very well and easily. You would probably be horrified to see where I live and my set up. I truly live in the woods and it just takes a few steps to overcome it. First step is never, never be out of sight of your birds, no matter how many extension cords you have to run. Second, have a gun of some sort. I don't care if it's an C02 or a .22 rifle. I've even used roman candles with report to keep eagles and hawks away. No experience with a gun? Get a shotgun, .410 is good for a beginner. Birdshot won't kill the animal, but it will make it darned uncomfortable for them to come around. Pee around the perimeter of the bird's ranging area. My experience shows me it does work, especially if it is renewed fairly regularly.

@@haunted5594 except human piss has been found to be an attractant too most Wildlife not something that discourages them. this is even true with deer. The main problem with your scenario there is never being out of sight of them which is just about impossible with anything that's free-ranging like this, it just doesn't work. I live out in the countryside in North Dakota we deal with these little bastards constantly and once they've found food one way they're going to keep coming back this guy is going to need a bullet to the head before he stops or the birds are going to need to be tightly contained. I'm just shocked and it must be something about where he is because where I am he would have long since been dealing with birds of prey as being a major issue! Great horned owls bald eagles golden eagles would have a Heyday with his flock.

I want to add a disclaimer here for Gold Shaw Farm. The views I have added here are my own, no one elses. I believe in having a gun for livestock safety. Not to kill, unless necessary. So any 'hate' should be directed towards me. I will also bring to mind for those who aren't living it, just what it is like to have an attack happen. You're out, everything is going well, and then it isn't. Or it could be right in front of you and without an equalizer, you have to watch the savaging of your buddy. Just saying, as a livestock owner, you owe it to your animals to keep them safe. I've had too many haunted dreams of the eyes of my buddies looking to me for help. Not cool.

Oh when I saw that you were making a ramp on the duck house, I knew it was going to be a funny video the first time you'd try to get them to go to bed. I find that it takes a good 3 to 5 days for my ducks to get use to any kind of change. They will get it, but it will definitely take more time to get them in at night. Why not just install a roosting bar in the duck house? No need to make a whole other coop for a few chickens. I'm sorry to hear about Delilah puddle duck 😥. We are fortunate enough to not have too many daytime predators here. A dog would be a great help on your farm!
@haunted5594
@haunted5594 4 года назад
Rose, it wouldn't be a good thing for the chickens. Anatomically, ducks are not the same as chicken and can actually cause harm and death to a hen. You have ducks, you know what I mean. Also, the moisture wouldn't be good for them either.
@rosepomarico6841
@rosepomarico6841 4 года назад
It's fine with the numbers and set up that he has, yes ducks create moisture but as long as the house is well maintained and of course it is, there's no issue.. I have all my chickens and ducks and guineas together, so much less work in the same coop.. chickens & gunieas up high and dry by the eaves and the ducks on the deep litter, as long as you are doing proper maintenance on the litter and keeping it dry and have proper air flow. It's when their coop never dries out or you don't have a proper air exchange that you run into issues. As far as the drakes, I've only ever seen that with ducks and chickens that get raised together from day 1. And frankly we cull any ill behavior from our flocks. We also have a high ratio of females to males... drakes and rooster are a dime a dozen and we don't put up with them if they're not well mannered all around.
@haunted5594
@haunted5594 4 года назад
@@rosepomarico6841 the moisture is only one issue. The larger is the drakes and their proclivity to mate. It only takes one time and you have a problem. I am very glad you haven't had to deal with that yet, but even though mine were not housed together, I have seen the drakes go after the chickens. Right now, I am setting up my 16 x 18' chicken house for chickens and geese. The chickens will have front of house and the geese will have the back. There is a chicken wire covered door blocking access to the back. Right now it's still not completely finished, but as I have no ducks right now, it isn't an issue. If the ducks were still here, I would never consider it. Right now, the drakes would be fairly quiet, but still better safe than sorry. Adding a coop onto a side of the duck house? Absolutely! I firmly believe in making it simple as possible. The added heat from the ducks and geese would also make Winter life for the chickens a lot better as well.
@rosepomarico6841
@rosepomarico6841 4 года назад
I understand that some people can have this issue, but we don't..our ducks don't see our chicken as mates, the hierarchy in the yard goes guineas, chickens, then ducks.. I think it's about managing personality. I never keep the most aggressive roosters or drakes. Selective breeding for behavior is just as important to me as confirmation. If you can't play nice then you don't fit here on the farm, it's quite simple.
@littleozarksfarmstead
@littleozarksfarmstead 4 года назад
@@rosepomarico6841 Agreed. Our little farmstead is in central Florida. We have 2 coops sharing a wall. Our hierarchy is turkeys (2 hens), chickens (including 2 roosters) and then our 5 ducks (2 are drakes). Aggressive behavior is not tolerated. Surrounding the pens and their yard is an electric fens. Within the yard is a shade tree and a wading pool. On warm nights we leave the coops open and the ducks and turkeys stay under the tree. It can work. Every one's experience is different. Side note: my husband "marks" the area behind the pen. Our woods are about 3 feet from the backside of the pen. 😋

I raised ducks when I was a girl. I had a 13 duckling hatch in 1968 that was put out in a pen during the day. About 2 hours after putting them out, a red tailed hawk flew down and grabbed 3 of them. I had to answer for the loss of those ducklings. After that I put a hardware cloth frame over the top of the pen. I like a couple of the ideas in your duck house. I too am designing an ultimate duck house and attached pens for day use. I plan to have a central house with 6 attached pens that I can use in rotation. There'll be one human door and 6 duck doors. Fun! Flight of the Valkyries! Yes.... they're charming and fun to keep. I was raised on duck eggs. When I went to school I was told other people ate chicken eggs, which I thought very odd! Good luck in future with the new house.

I was thinking the same thing, I have a feeling the mesh floor panel will provide some good airflow. Then again, it's Vermont we're talking about here. The duck house is only 24 inches off the ground, there's a good chance of over 24 inches of snowfall sealing that space off, especially since the roof is designed so that snow slides off and piles up along the back (where the mesh is).

good job on the Duckhouse....you're not as bad of a carpenter than you let on. just a suggestion though, on the back end of your roof, nail up a 2x4 to the end of your joists flush with the roof to protect from the wind getting under the roof and it will help support the whole thing....you will have to trim the joists down so they are even though.

I bought the linoleum off the roll at 12' wide and bought enough to avoid seams, I think you will be surprised how much water moves through the seam and eventually Wil curl up and allow the water/moisture to effect the plywood. Lastly, overhangs would have saved you agrivation when the snow starts to accumulate. You did great on the duck house. I'm sure they'll like it once they get used to it. On the foam, any of it exposed to sunlight will disintegrate unless it's painted to protect it. You can also cut off any excess easily. I'm sorry about Delilah.

Both those holes in your new duck house are large enough for a bear to enter the house. You need smaller holes for protection. of predators as well as the winter winds. Two holes in the building will allow the winds to blow through the building when you open the door. I would put in a bird door that is half again the size of the ducks. As for the water hole. Finish the floor and place a water heater tray there and plumb it outside or perhaps an old shower bottom. Remember preditors like to hide under things like duck houses and those huge holes would just be a come-on-in invitation. I lost an entire flock of chickens because a desperate medium-sized cat managed to squeeze itself through a 9 by 12-inch hole during a blizzard.

I suggest that you widen the ramp. Your slope is great, half as steep as mine... but with how agile ducks are your ramp is like a balance beam. I would suggest 3 to 4' wide because you want them to be comfortable using it. Despite my ramp being much steeper, my ducks go in-and-out throughout the day of their own accord. Maybe even 5' wide because You plan to have geese use it

I've noticed you have had some problems with predators, and your suggestion with guard dogs is a good idea. My family owns ducks and after we got a great pyrenees and would leave her outside with the ducks preditors became much less of an issue. We don't live in a colder climate but they have thick coats and have no problem with severe cold.

Yes I have a Great Pyrenees named Wynter. He is the most protective dog and very well behaved. They do like to wonder but I think that is only an issue for us city owners. Jumping over our fence is about as easy as jumping on the bed.

I agree Olivia. My neighbor had a great Pyrenees and he was a wonderful, protective animal. Very intelligent, beautiful and large enough to fend off most predators. Morgan, I am so sorry about Delilah but in my area the coyotes hunt day and night. People who walk their dogs have to be cautious because the coyotes will engage the pets in "coyote games" just to make a kill. LGD are a must have.

Just had a thought. Maybe something that provides a bit of grip might make the ramp easier for the ducks and geese. We have a good waterproof product called tredgrip down here in New Zealand that you can paint on. Something similar (sorry, I have no idea what's available in Vermont) would make the ramp much less slippery.

We are aiming to get 3 alpaca guards next year - too stressful with the vixen and her husband wandering around (let alone feeding cubs!) - even with electric fencing I'm worrying all the time. We have no outbuildings, but hoping the local council will approve a new barn - that'll be for the chickens and the ducks can have the current chicken enclosure - especially if avian flu comes back across from Europe. I lost one chicken to the fox - although she was moulting and came back, but she died from one wound the following morning. That was during the daytime too. If they are hungry they will come back. I made my husband urinate around the big hedgerow banks which apparently seemed to work as there was no sign of fox spoor - but since the rain (and boy have we had a lot) the fox(es) have come back. Wish they'd eat the wild rabbits though! Great structure - well done. Almost feel you should have camped out first - looks warm and cosy enough for the winter!

I’m sorry about feLila. We have all gone through this. Feathers in the woods is a certain sign. We’ve had a coyote pick up a beautiful bird 15 feet from where my husband was working on the car. We do not free range anymore. I think the electric fence is a wonderful idea.And your new dog house is going to be great. Don’t feel too bad Delilah had many good days. You did great

Morgan, I don't know how you feel about firearms but you're going to have to get one to keep the figures from your flocks. The problem will only get worse as Winter gardens the country up north. A good firearms dealer will fix you up with the right weapon. The new duck house looks good. Love your videos. There are 2 you tubers I never miss each day. I never miss Lumnah Acres and I never miss Gold Shaw Farms.

You should stain the house to make it last longer. Or paint it I suppose but I think a natural stain, like black walnut for example, would be the best for longevity of the wood and is a healthier alternative

That new duck house looks amazing! Just a warning though when housing ducks and geese together, the ganders and the drake may fight, this is from my own personal experience with my African geese and my Muscovey Ducks. The males fight during the mating season, but they have since calmed down due as it isn't mating season anymore.

It is tough to lose a duck like that. We lost one of our chickens in the exact same way. We used to let our chickens and ducks free range all day. Then one afternoon I was in the front yard with the kids and we heard a commotion in the back yard. Doing a quick headcount I was missing our Barred Rock chicken Oreo. I found a pile of feathers on the back lawn and a trail into the woods. I followed the trail of feathers till they stopped. I also found tracks in the mud too but our predator seemed to be a Fisher cat. I too felt as if it was my fault for getting to comfortable with letting them free range. They only free range now with supervision. Thanks for the video and the new duck house looks great.

Those predators are always watching you from a distance, waiting for your to make a mistake. They believe themselves to be unnoticed. If you take a thermal scope you should be able to find them, then a guard dog would be pretty helpful too. Finally you can get a trip plate cage. I used it to catch the raccoons that were attacking the ducks one by one until i had none left. They weren't attracted to the cage when i used steak. Only when i used chicken was when I finally caught one.

Just FYI about chickens. When laying...they will invariably all use the same box. Or 2. You can have 5, 6 or even a dozen nice clean nesting boxes and they will use the same 1 or 2. All of them. I've even seen my hens line up waiting for their turn at the one box. Just like standing in line at the bank or the grocery store. I'd stand in the kitchen eating a sandwich (cuz they tend to lay in the middle of the day, not in the morning like people think) while looking out the back door and watch them line up. One would lay (announced by her cackling), and she'd strut out and the next one in line would go in to the box. Sometimes there would be 2 hens in a box. If one got broody, I had a 30" x 30" by 18" high (rabbit) cage tucked in a corner with a nesting box in it that I would transfer her and the number of eggs for her to hatch into and leave her be. Worked every time. I had an old shell of a trailer sitting on a concrete slab that my fowl would spend the night in to protect them form predators (usually a dog from the junk yard/recycle plant a 1/2 mile away) but one time a bobcat came in during the middle of the day and nabbed a goose. Even with the dogs, it still got him. I figured the wild cat needed dinner more than me so I just wrote that as a one off.

Thanks for the great videos!. Not ducks, but maybe someday you'll branch out. A friend of mine raises "Self loading Hogs". He built a ramp and platform. He regularly feeds the hogs at the top. Going up a ramp becomes normal for them. Come truck time they load right in. Anyone who has loaded hogs into a truck will appreciate the concept.
