Austin Texas - Things I wish I knew before i moved!
If you are thinking about moving to Austin Texas, here are the top 3 things I wish I knew before I moved here. This goes for round rock, bee cave and as far south as Buda. Lots of traffic, infrastructure problems and rising cost of living in the city! If you are searching for an agent in Austin, I would love to help!

I have to say, you are not a very good realtor if you didn't check those very basic things you are bringing up before you moved to Austin. And I don't see how you can say food in Austin is expensive. The food in Austin is about comparable or a little cheaper in Dallas but even Dallas has a wide range of prices from really cheap to expense. They are both big cities and have affordable grocery and restaurant options. You may need to do more research.

been to LA, Boston and Bay Area. Austin is facing a housing crisis and it shows in gentrification as a lot of lower income residents are being priced out. Cost of living is high in Austin due to zoning, regulations and in large part due to our state property tax system and numerous taxing districts.

Lived in Austin for over twenty years. Yes, the housing prices have skyrocketed, and traffic has gotten worse, although not nearly as bad as Cali, Dallas, Houston. Rents have stayed pretty low, and renting houses can be a good option for many. The food here is actually pretty cheap if you shop at Walmart or especially HEB which has amazing coupons. Go to Randalls, Central Market, Wholefoods, then it's expensive.

This is not LA traffic. I’m loving watching all the videos of people saying why you shouldn’t move to Austin. It’s simply a different definition of traffic. Traffic in Midwest = cars not moving at the speed limit. Traffic in LA - walking 10 miles faster than it takes to drive.
@MicroUrb
@MicroUrb 4 года назад
Peter, your response made me laugh, the walking 10 miles faster than traffic part. But hey with 150 people moving here a day, wait awhile, the people walking faster than traffic will be here soon. It might already be here, I don't know I work from home and will be leaving Austin after almost 2 years of being in this zoo. Love Texas, but y'all can keep Austin.

thats right Samantha, and here in Austin they expect for you to actually offer the seller more than the asking price like they do in New York City where I grew up as a child. So save your money and be a first adopter of a more reasonable up and coming town either here in Texas or maybe even Oklahoma. You will be glad in the long run you followed my advice, then again, not everyone can do what I do and work from home. Best of luck to you but as a current Austin resident who is getting the hell outta here this coming summer, don't say I didn't warn you.

The price of groceries in Austin is pretty comparable to most places, maybe a little cheaper. If you shop at Randall's you're gonna pay a high price. HEB has the best prices and best customer service and do more for the community than just about any other grocery store chain.

Compared to the rest of Texas, Austin is expensive. I interviewed for a job near Austin and the hiring company expected me to leave my job and move to Austin for the same money that I was currently earning. Why would I do that? I explained to my prospective employers that Austin was at least 10% more expensive than where I was currently living and the traffic is much worse. And don't get me started on the toll roads in Austin.

After 12 years here, I've decided that Austin is just not worth it anymore. Traffic is increasingly getting worse, housing/leasing costs have skyrocketed. Good luck getting a studio under $1,000, and those are the prices in RR and PFU. Restaurants are pricey, people are entitled and fake, it just isnt the same. I'm over it and will be one of the many, to move to another state.

I would have to respectfully disagree, Texas is great, but after almost 2 years, I am getting hell outta the Austin zoo and the cool new people and experiences I have had will not change that. Again, central Texas is cool if you like camping and outdoor things like I do, but thats got nothing to do with the Austin zoo and cringing everytime you need to go to the store and having to say a prayer that some jackass does not end my familys life because they need to get to a 7 Eleven quick, is not worth it to me. Not exaggerating, had a neighbors car totaled just for that very reason. People doing 50mph on a breakdown lane, a breakdown lane!! I will hazard a guess and say that 80% of Austinites are either driving without insurance or with licenses suspended.

The stuff I'm hearing complaints wise about Austin don't really concern me being from the Chicago area... should they? Rent is insane in Chicago. Traffic is insane. Summers are hot (but not as hot so I am a little concerned about that but i don't normally mind the heat). Homelessness. Bad neighborhoods. Seems like problems that all big cities have and maybe just people who don't like how big Austin has become have with it? I don't want to gloss over the problems, but I can't see a lot of this being an issue if you're from New York, LA, San Francisco, Chicago, etc.

Yes, we have LA style traffic because the majority of those 150 people a day are from Los Angeles. And lets be clear, its not just heavy traffic, but apparently the social contract among motorists have broken down in Austin, no pun intended. Case in point, before you move to what in the Northeast we call the breakdown lane, because well, your car has broken down, ensure that there is not some jackass in a pickup doing 50mph on that breakdown lane because he feels that he is of a privileged class and does not need to wait to actually get to the exit to actually exit, but use the breakdown lane as a 50mph extra lane to use at his leisure. As far as buying a house, if you are like me, a red blooded American who grew up in a house with a huge backyard, you don't want to move to Austin. Here they build houses with tiny backyards because supposedly the youth of California who want to buy houses in Austin don't care to have a backyard. The other theory is, the less backyard, the more houses you can build per square inch...you know, cha-ching!! What they also don't tell you is that there is no bicycle community or culture here, its false, have no clue why Bicycle magazine gave Austin a gold medal for being a bicycle city, that's a real, big fat joke on me and YOU if you think there is a bicycle community here similar to Seattle or Philadelphia, there isn't. Also, everywhere you go there is a highway next to you, WTF?!! I lived in a small town outside of Philadelphia for years, so I knew Austin was going to be a mess, but EVERYWHERE you go there is some highway criss crossing the city, its like city planners in Austin are baby boomers from the 1950s. Hello guys, do me a favor, look up the Big Dig in Boston and see how that improved traffic and life in general for those who like to walk and ride a bike and welcome to the 21st century, now please stop building these death trap freeways and start considering trains and trolleys that actually criss cross the city instead of freeways, thanks. My first night in Austin, there was loud mariachi music playing in the background while I was in bed, WTF?!! Several months later I heard various gunshots. Keep in mind, I have lived in the worst ghettoes of the Northeast and NEVER heard actual gunshots in my life. Others I grew up with had, but I never did, until I moved to Austin. My first six months, jackasses in my apartment complex dented my car twice. Austin police is dressed in tactical gear, why?! The San Francisco homeless community is here in Austin and they aint going nowhere no time soon. Don't get me wrong, its a great place to visit, but Austin is nothing more than a party college town that it always has been, pretending, with the help of the neo-liberal elites that own Google, pretending to be something that it patently is not. It is NOT another Seattle, it is NOT another Philly, it IS 100% the twin sister to Los Angeles, God help us all. So yeah its a great place to visit but you wouldn't want to live here and I believe more people like me will spend no more than 1 to 2 years here and bounce like their life depends on it because it does, since Austin is also a 5G city and you are getting radiated like crazy, my EMF/EMR measuring tool is off the charts here. So yeah, I predict that I am only one of many who will only spend one to two years here and then vote with our feet again. I love Texas, but you can have what will someday become a high crime and almost already a high polluted city if you count EMF/EMR.

And the sprawl continues outward…all of this growth is great...for now. It’s quick easy money, but long term its not sustainable. Traffic will continue to worsen, air quality will continue to deteriorate, not to mention the water crisis much of Texas WILL be facing. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but in the coming years. Aquifers are being depleted, and lake levels are low. Combined with warm weather, expect to see more algae blooms. Uncontrolled growth comes with a steep price down the road.

dude, give it up and just do like me and leave, well I am about to leave this summer. Its too late to tell people not to come, like the San Francisco homeless population, the zoo animals that are here are permanent. I am also sorry to sound so mean, but online they made it seem like Austin only had high-tech professionals like me moving here and that it was a family oriented city. Hell no, they have trashy young people from LA whose families kicked them out and these kids say he lets move to Austin, its what everyone else is doing. How my neighbors who work at Dominoes Pizza and smoke weed all day are making the rent is beyond me, but since rents at my apartment complex have gone up, I know they are going to be tits up some time late next year if they are not caught for smoking weed soon. Why would anyone without a profession shlep all the way to an increasingly expensive city is beyond me, but the riff raff is here and its permanent. I count my blessings that I work from home and will be able to move to the real Texas next summer and get the hell outta this zoo.

@@UnsaltedCashew38 People in Austin are as rude as anywhere in L.A., Miami or NYC and worse still motorists here engage in recklessly endangering driving. So bad I can give you one example per day. Today, as I was exiting the apartment complex through the driveway that is for exit only, a motorist decided that was their lucky break and gunned it towards me with their pickup so they could get in, apparently they do not have the code to get in this apartment complex. Had I not read the "I am about to do something stupid" look in her eyes, I would not be here writing to you right now, I was able to shift my car away enough to not get hit. Again, recklessly endangering driving like this is a normal, everyday occurrence. There is a reason you hear ambulances almost every single day now in Austin. The year I first moved here, you hardly ever heard ambulances or police sirens, now its as bad as New York City.

Austin Sucks! All the marketing hype of a music city and Green progressive city is BS! They had high rise apts that appeared overnite for the 'boom" that came to austin. Those same high rises had no parking for their tenants and were told it was cause it was a green bulding with biking, Great alternative Transportations, trolly, speed trains, car pooling friendly... and they would sell this to get more people in a building with no parking in a city that was busting at the seams and were not expecting the boom! So the infrastructure of roads and hyw are a friggin mess and traffic is insane. I lived in Austin most my life but lived in L.A. and Washington D.C. And i can tell you Austin is crazier and almost outlawish on the roads there. Even Art Acevedo (Chief of Police) left to go to Houston and he said " Austin City Cousel would never give me the money I needed and ...I dont want my name associated with crime and death rates of a city in my book that sees gaining money more important than tacking care of its citizens". I am no fan of his either. But when a man takes a job in houston (He became Houstons Chief of Police) with a notorious 8th ward and a bigger population tells me more than anything. OMG..Dont get me started on the predatory towing companies!!! Austin is a shithole!! You can go there and make good money but then ur paying so much for living it really doesnt add up too much!! Austin is like a stripper pole..It looks great from afar but if you get up close to it it is stinky and nasty. People who think its great and wonderful are living in a bubble cause its trendy to live there...I am Old school Austin and will never go back...no matter what you pay me

Avi i lived in L.A for 20+ years and moved to Austin about 2 yrs ago. Compared to Houston and Dallas, Austin is a very small city and they were not prepared for all the transplants coming from other states. Rent is getting expensive and they don’t have rent control which means you might get a 300 dollar rent increase after a year (it happened to my co-worker) and yes, it doesn’t have big city rush hour traffic but unlike L.A., austin doesn’t have a lot of alternate routes. Lastly, it does get Hoooooot in the summer and extremely humid which means it is cicada season; they’re creepy insects hat make a horrible noise all through summer! ✌🏻
