Native San Carlan here. Our community is very active we have tons of kids sports, service clubs, scouts, dance, music teachers, artists, Childrens theater, etc. The schools have active PTAs, the arts, community gardens and are easy to walk to. We have a community festival Hometown Days in May, Art & Wine in October, Music in the Park in the summer, Family Movie Nights, Farmers Market and a very popular Christmas Tree Lane in December. The city is dog friendly and there is a dog park at City Hall. Our other high school is Sequoia in Redwood City which has the International Baccalaureate (IB) program, Health Academy, Middle College, and Digital Arts Academy. I was raised here and I raised my children here. Women can walk alone at night. Our kids (10+) can go downtown or to the parks without adult supervision and ride bikes in the street. Burton Park has a Youth Center for kids 10+.
