Great suggestion. For anyone interested, we've actually got a great article on understanding credit scores and how to build credit in Canada: moving2canada.com/credit-score-newcomer-canada/
I recommend using a credit union. They tend to,have really good services for their members. Coast capital,is national so you can access anywhere in Canada. Also you can use their bank machines almost anywhere. Ps. They have no fee accounts absolutely no fees. Whist in Canada adds up.
I would recommend using the service Canada centre in Burnaby. My partner and I are staying in Burnaby and went to the Service Canada centre there and we were in and out in 15 minutes
Interesting enough, but you don't need your SIN to open a debit card(checking aaccount) nor even to open a credit card in Canada. If you have your Landing Paper that you were issued at the border - you can use that and your passport to get both - Credit Card and Bank account. I know for sure about the experience at TD bank and ScotiaBank - but other's shouldn't be different.
That's so crazy! The whole SIN number for goods and services in Canada has me really thrown. The phone provider was adamant that it was the only way I could get a plan with them (despite multiple searches online telling me otherwise). I know banks have to ask for a SIN number for specific parts of banking so good to know that its not mandatory to just get an account!
New to your channel. I LOVE this series! So entertaining, engaging, and informative! Thank you and please never stop this series lol. Show us Canadian apartments, how utilities work, how to get a car up there, how to meet people, what their job applications look like, etc.
Ah thank you very much! Stephen is with the team full time now and has a ton of videos that he’s working on being released over the coming weeks about life in Canada so make sure your subscribed to be the first to see them 🕺🏻
My plan WAS to go immediately to the resort I'm working on seasonally. Do you think it'll be a good choice to go immediately there and apply online for my SIN a few days before working?
Hard to say I'm afraid, personally, I would rather have my SIN in hand as quickly as possible as its the beginning of the getting paid and bank accounts etc....You could try and get it in the airport?
Omg.. i love how you made this into a series!🤍🇨🇦 New subscriber here.. I'll be waiting for the latest! Keep yourself safe out there! Watching you from 🇭🇰
@@stephentadgh what can you suggest to a new comer? I think a job should be first then a house so you can strategically find one near the job. You can't get a mortgage yet bcoz you need to have a good credit score.
@@mahkitta3892 All great options! In Vancouver the city is pretty small and easy to access (video 3 is going to cover all that) so I chose where I wanted to live first and then focus on a job. I work in media though so I'm very used to traveling for my job so it was more important to live in an area I liked. Credit scores are a new thing for someone coming from Ireland, even renting an apartment caused a lot of issue as I had no credit built up when I moved over.
@@stephentadgh There are numerous credit cards from major Canadian banks that offer good to excellent CASHBACK features. For this reason, it is desireable to put as many charges as possible onto a cashback credit card. Check with your bank for more details on cashback cards that offer rewards. One of the best cards right now is from bee-moe bank. As for Vancouver, yes it is expensive, but there's a reason for that - it's a desireable environment to live in. Van city is sleepy enough a town as it is. You made a good choice. In Canada, stick to the MTV rule - Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, if you want a more metropolitan experience since you went through all this trouble to come across the pond.
@@SMTDR The MTV rule is great 😂 Defo going to be using that! Although I'm sure there's a few in Calgary that might think differently! Credit cards in general are a new thing to wrap my head around. They weren't very common in Ireland (I think as a country we hate the idea of 'owing money') so its been a wild ride trying to understand the rewards on offer when I use mine! I must look into the BMO one more!
Hey Lana it sure is. That’s what I did. If you go in person they give you the SIN on the day so bring a proof of your Airbnb address (receipt should be fine) and then when you get long term accommodation switch your address for your SIN
Found out my girlfriend's phone carrier Cricket has coverage in Canada and they have plans for like $50/m unlimited talk, text, & data. Could also look into them as well!
It can be. I’m using a 12GB plan and usually end the month with 3-4GB left so might drop down to get a lower cost of plan. Just remember to bring your own phone if you want to get the best price
I used my Airbnb address and then switched the address when I got longer accommodation sorted. When you go to get your SIN in person they give it to you on the day so the address is just for the form but you’ll be able to get your SIN on the day
So this depends. Some phone plan providers wanted me to give them my SIN and provide a credit check and bank account details to sign up to a plan. I thought this was a bit of overkill personally (esp re. my SIN) so I went with a provider that didn't request a SIN. Maybe it won't matter for some people but just something I wasn't comfortable handing over and meant I couldn't get a plan with that particular provider.
@@stephentadgh cheers for the reply man!! I'd a complete brain fart and totally forgot about pay as you go plans 🤦♂️😂so I got 1 of them to start out!! Keep up the good videos!!
For getting a SIN, I understand that you need proof of address. As i have not got permanent accommodation, can I use the airbnb receipt as proof? I will be staying there for the first 2 weeks in Vancouver. Also, not sure if this changes anything but I will be in Ottawa for the 2 weeks before that, so can I get a SIN in Ottawa using a Vancouver proof of address? Any thoughts on this would be much appreciated
Nice and a very helpful video. Thanks 😊, please kindly advise me on this one, I'm currently based i am a South African currently based in Doha due to work, however, i wish to move to Canada... Finding a job in Canada.... What are the easiest ways of finding a job there as a foreigner or is it easier finding a job when you are in Canada?
There are some immigration programs that require a job offer in advance and some that don't! Start off by consulting our overview of all Canada's immigration options: moving2canada.com/immigration-to-canada/
Stephen brought his own phone with him! It turned out to be the cheapest option for him as a phone plan with a phone can be quite expensive so if you want to access cheaper plans bringing your own phone might be best. You can check out one of our partners if you'd like to get a sim shipped over to you before you even land! bit.ly/M2CPhoneBox
@@Moving2Canadainfo thank you for the advice just applied for my admission. Hopefully it comes through. Will get a sim through the link when everything is finalized. Thanks a lot. Appreciate it
Hi Stephen, realy helpfull video. Just one question I have regarding SIN. What documents you submited aplying for SIN. Did you prove your adress? If yes, was that airbnb adress or no? How fast did you get SIN? I am asking because I am also living in Airbnb now and soon going to get SIN.
Hi Yuriy, I used my AirBnB address as you get issued your SIN number on the day you go to your meeting. Once I move to my new place I'll just update my address withService Canada. so shouldn't be any issue using your AirBnB
@@stephentadgh Thank you Stephen, this information is very helpful, a person told me that in order to get the SIN number I should already have a Bank account and Canadian number, is that right? or I can directly go to get my SIN just after I get off the plane, with just my work and study permit and my passport
@@juannino20 hi Juan, I didn’t have either before I got my SIN number. You are able to schedule an appointment with service Canada once you have a Canadian a number so that can make things easier if you don’t want to line up but honestly I think the easiest thing to do is get up early, Queue for a half hour/ 45 mins and just get you’re SIN number on the same day. No need for phone number or bank account 👌🏻
Its all subjective Raider isn't it. If you like snow and snow sports living in Vancouver can make days on the mountain pretty accessible and the grey of winter can be offset by the chance of fresh pow. It does however rank 9th as the rainiest city in Canada but also ranks very high on one of the warmest cities in Canada as well. It tends to rain for longer periods of time here but when the sun comes out and summer sweeps in you can be pretty confident it won't be raining very much for a few months
