I grew up in Florida and now live in Georgia since 1996. For years I wanted to move back. Now, not so much. I think I will just keep coming down a few times a year. My siblings still live there with paid off homes as well as mine is. However, their monthly expenses are triple of mine. All the best. Jim from Georgia
1. Florida is a transient state. It's difficult to make real friends. Social capital ranks near the bottom of 50 states. 2. Over development. I used to walk home from school and go through orange groves. Now it's all ugly asphalt roads and cheap strip malls. 3. Corporations are buying up tons of real estate and jacking up prices. 4. There are few parks. I have to drive 20 miles for a park that is nothing more than a lump of sand. 5. Sinkholes, thanks to overpopulation and the depletion of aquifers, are everywhere. 6. The weather is getting hotter by the year. The humidity is unbearable. 7. DeSantis is a bully who caves to the demands of corporations and not people. 8. Wages are appalling. I know of 10 people who live in a tiny 2 BR house. 9. Snakes go into our houses to warm themselves. Snakes are everywhere. Alligators are found in sreet corners. Their land has been destroyed. 10. Horible traffic congestion and rude drivers. 11. Floridians are not known for hospitality. People are mean.
Florida is still wonderful despite a lot of negatives. The scenery and weather here is awesome except for SUMMER and hurricanes! The problem is too many people from up North have swarmed here, so no home inventory and killer traffic. I still enjoy living close to the beach and lots of places to visit within the state.
Moved out of Florida in 22 after nearly 40 years . Sold our properties for what we considered to be an outrageous sum and left the State . But we are now living a much quieter and slower life . While the Florida we loved is now just a distant memory . The new comers now flooding the State will never know what we old Floridians had .
At the beginning of this year, I left Suffolk County, New York and moved to Florida. The average home now in Suffolk County, NY is selling for over $600,000. A house in a so so area that typically needs a lot of work and expensive renovations. The same 3 bedroom ranch that is in a good area, with good schools, but still needs a lot of work and expensive renovations, is going for at least $800,000, and the property taxes for a 1/3 rd of an acre (Kings Park for example) will run you just over $20,000 per year in property taxes. In Florida, I now own my three bedroom home, with an office, and two baths, in a very nice area, mortgage free. The electric bill is substantially less than what I was paying on Long Island. Although the prices of groceries is about the same, the experience of grocery shopping is quite different. At a Waldbaums in Manorville, NY, you’re lucky if there is two cashiers. Quite often there is one, and you’re expected to go to a different register, with no cashier, and ring your self up. At a Publix in Florida, there is always a cashier looking to ring you up, and then out of nowhere another employee shows up and helps you bag. So far, Florida seems alright, and I think the alligators are pretty cool. Rs
Two weeks in Florida in January or February is about all of that place I can take. A nice hotel suits me fine and when I leave, I don’t have to worry about property taxes, insurance, hurricane damage or crazy high HOA fees. But, that’s just me.
What a bunch of crap. 400,000 moved here in 2022, 300,000 in 2023. Source is USA Today. Property tax on my nieces $285k house hit $8500 in illinois. She left.
Florida has 😮the worst HOA and highest property insurance, taxes and required flood insurance, 🙅🏾♂️bankruptcy is imminent, only fool would stick around, unless your a business mogul, or sports athlete, that place is not for everybody.
I can feel the tension when on i95 shooting is an everyday occurrence. The high price for sunshine is not worth it . People can't afford it anymore. Property taxes, insurance astronomical, the traffic , the gas. Oh I forget foooooood !!!!!
Hey Lady, when I was born the state had a population of around 2.5 million people. Today there are what, prit'near 22 million people crammed into our fair state? Best I remember there were two area codes 813 and 305. Now I can't even count 'em. The hospital I was born in was 30 miles away because the town didn't have a maternity ward in their 20 bed hospital. Take the good with the bad I guess. If I didn't own my home outright I wouldn't be able to afford to live here, but I sure wished the Damned Yankees would pull up stakes and leave. Getting around town is almost impossible. Nut to Butt all the way. Keep cranking out those vids and I keep a watchin'! Thanks for your time and effort!
Well, they aren't leaving in "droves" but it is not possible to afford my lovely state without a lot of cash for a home or condo, insurance, taxes and maintenance costs which have all absolutely skyrocketed, especially in the last five years.
You need to compare those housing prices with NY, NJ and other states. My niece was paying $8,500 property tax on a run down home appraised at $285k in Illinois. She left.
@@gussfish8670 yes I agree but leaving in droves sounds like people flying New York or Illinois or New Jersey or California. And this is not the same thing.
Hi Lisa. Good clip. I've posted here before and as a former Miami high rise condo owner and Board President during a 40-year tumult, I chose to exit that mess. I sold my unit 2 months ago for the reasons you mentioned. However, I am on the 50-yard line as to whether it means ditching Florida as if it's Miami (or any other big city) or nothing. A year before selling, I went to scout out the Tampa Bay region (I lived there at the turn of the century: 1998-2002) and while I liked the Gulf side, the land side was a low carb version of Miami and the overall value as a renter just wasn't there for me. So, what to do? An old Miami friend contacted me late last year just when I had decided it was really time to sell. He lives halfway up the east coast of Florida in Satellite Beach, just east of Melbourne. I went and checked it out for vibe and quality of life after looking online at rent rates up there beforehand. In the end, I sold out and moved into an apartment up there. My housing costs were less than half the cost of living in the condo. Rents have most likely peaked so my costs will remain steady while the ex-condo will continue to rise massively in costs. The worst aspects of BEING OWNED BY a condo (which is what it has turned into) is that there are no cost controls. Too many entities have a license to steal. With all the other negatives of condos, particularly high rises at or bear the coast, they are no longer suitable for the middle class. As far as I'm concerned, they are PURE POISON financially for the middle class. Many of the negatives you cited aren't really the case up there, or at least to a much lesser degree. In the end, those facing affordability issues should consider some of the smaller towns of Florida before giving up the good aspects of Florida living. If that does not remain the case, as a renter I can just leave it behind without worrying about selling a place. Staying light on my feet is important to me.
I actively dislike the beach, sun, sand, salt water, fishing, boating, and seafood, so there's little to nothing for me in Florida. I prefer 4 seasons, snow on Christmas/ New Years, sweater weather, autumn leaves, and snow-capped mountains.
Lisa I live in Portland Maine, we are all landlocked here too. No lateral moves possible and no inventory within a 50 mile radius and beyond. We were invaded by New Yorkers during the Plandemic who drove up prices. Only way to win in the Northeast is sell snd move South. You will fetch a very high sale price, to buy that; Florida, SC, NC, Georgia home. Never saw anything like this. Always was ample inventory if one wanted to move to the next town or next state. No more.
I think prices will continue to be high.... there will be no relief. We'd have to have a total market crash..... which with the national debt we have could potentially happen. Thank you for your comments..
Well things aren't better in Texas.Housing around all the metro areas are high.Traffic is crazy even where I,m at.Food costs are going up like elsewhere.IH35 North , between San Antonio and Austin is starting to blend together.Pretty soon it will look like parts of LA where towns all run together. There is new housing, but don't know the cost . It's insane .
Since the SCAMdemic, our town, Spartanburg, SC took off with major apartments, homes new construction, and a ginormous new courthouse was built, with I'm pretty sure government grants and such, as our Chamber won 2021 best in the United States Corporation chamber of year, whoopee. We really abhor all this new growth here, as now traffic is too busy, and just getting too many people. Our town is one of the fastest growing in the Corporation. Yes, folks, research the Act of 1871.
@@FBAUSA-z6fdon’t worry we’ll just wait until the Florida housing market crashes hard like it always does during the downturn and then we’ll buy up your house and rent it back out to you.
@serggla924 Yeah, I am waiting for the housing market to crash too. To make the non-native pandemic Florida's and the poor ghetto Florida's to leave the state. 😂😂😂😂
I agree, pack up, and run, the governor Ron disaster 😂he’s a mad man, florida laws don’t even protect citizens, only business interests, and the fixed income senior citizen can’t even afford rent, the majority are going homeless 😞
Canada is expensive due to the rich Chinese in China, buying up property as an investment while never living in the properties. Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal are victims to this.
We were looking in south west Florida. In 2019 there was a vast supply of really nice homes on the water with a pool and boat dock for +/- $300,000. Then BAM! The election and almost instantly those homes doubled in price, compounded with rising interest rates, we were done. The same homes were more expensive than homes here In Massachusetts the second highest market in the country! We did put in an offer for $70,000 over asking and did not get it. Fortunately Or unfortunately, the house was nearly demolished very soon after when hurricane Ian hit. We would have lost everything. Such a sad situation down there. So for now, we will just visit on occasion.
I live in Ocala and I really like it here. Although I've noticed an increase in traffic flow along 40 Its nothing compared to where I came from. Moved here from D. C. area in 2013 and I think its a great place to be, The people are so much nicer here. It was getting so bad in N. Va it took 45 min to go 10 miles at rush hour. Im not exagerating.
I wish someone would have told me that Medicare supplements/gap policies are sometimes more than double other places in the country. In Virginia, my Plan G was $88 monthly. In Florida it is $172! Same plan. Home and car insurance is high. Property taxes continue to rise. We love it here, except for snowbird season, and plan on staying until we can't.
I’m not thinking of relocating to FLA.but I do enjoy your no nonsense approach and humor of the good and not so good things to think about when making a life changing decision of relocating
Two things I haven’t seen mentioned are that the Baby Boomers are Retiring. The 2nd thing is as someone who came from Boston, I find the native Floridians are MUCH friendlier. High costs and low inventory is NOT unique to Florida. Housing Costs are rising in all these “hot” areas. Have you seen Tennessee lately? i am extremely happy here (3 years). The local people are so nice.
You're always a pleasure to watch Lisa! If the Fed starts cutting rates then I think prices will stay buoyant and possibly rise even more.Coming to you from raining S.Calif. Where was doggo?lol Take care Lisa!
Heat and humidity are small prices to pay for living in a state that is run like America is supposed to be. DeSantis has done a good job pushing back against the left's craziness. I'd rather be here than anywhere in the USA.
I live in Zephyhills, FL. Not exactly West Palm Beach! But I'm paying over $7500 a year in property taxes for a 2400 square foot home that's appraised at only $360,000. That includes a CDD of about $2500. But don't you think that's ridiculously high?
@@TheRealLivingWithLisa Thanks for your response. But for Zephyrhills, I think they're overdoing it. Nothing extraordinary whatsoever about this town. It's loaded with mobile home parks. I was really blindsided by the taxes.
We contemplated to move to Florida in migrating from the Northeast. We ended up deciding to build our forever home in Tennessee. The climate, costs, scenery and people's behavior/culture are more in line for us in Tennessee than what we found in Florida. We do love us some Key West though... but I don't think our livers could take living their year-round. 😂
I moved from PA. to Spring Hill Florida 20 years ago and I love it here. You can buy a decent 2/2/1 for less than $200,000 and a 3/2/2 for $275,000 (I own 5.) Citrus County is even more affordable. If you prefer to spend big bucks, Palm Beach and St. Pete are an option. Don't like it her, try Denver, LA, or NYC, bu bye! Canadians welcome, bring money. :-) Hurricanes? The Carolina s have it harder.
I am not sure what is going on with this country right now but here in Massachusetts my taxes have doubled over the years and now the town is voting for a new highway department building, the 3 schools need updating, and we need a new dog pound never mind the illegal immigrants living in the motels . I might be better off in Florida
You mentioned that new construction is the best option because of the insurance price. Can you explain this? If 2 houses are very similar in size, one is 20 years old with new roof and one is new construction with impact windows and new roof, what's the difference? $100 or $1000?
I'd like to give you a clear answer but insurance a varies greatly... IF... you find a home with a new roof, I'm pretty sure the insurance will still be higher, because these insurance companies look at everything, like age of the electrical panel, water heater, AC, The roof tie downs on an older home potentially bring a higher premium too. Call an insurance agent and ask their expert opinion.
What a crock ! We can’t keep people out , they come here because it’s like it was before America went crazy. Decent weather except a few months of summer, good schools, beautiful beaches, great for active people due to the awesome weather in winter, lots to do.
I voted with my feet and left the USA for good. Best decision of my life! No more tax even though I'm work for an American company (telemedicine). I moved to Nature Island in the Caribbean. Very low cost of living, high quality of life, pristine, unspoiled, crime free.
I moved to a lower cost, lower congestion area in Florida, but during that time I will research leaving the country because of the direction of EVERYTHING. Thanks for your suggestion. I will add it to the list of places to research.
People leaving High tax states bring their voting habits with them and cause taxes to Skyrocket in florida. Florida has become unaffordable. I'm glad I chose rural Japan where the taxes are 120th of what they are in the United states.
as much as Id Love to move home,, its just not in the Cards, Ill visit and see friends, but thats it, the Rapid Growth has ruined it for the most part.
Wealthy folks are fleeing California. They want water, warmth , freedom, low taxes & freedom---they are heading to Florida. These people have $$$. Florida prices are cheap compared to California.
CA prop 13. Property tax based on original purchase price of $50,000 instead of current $1 million. obviously you and many others across the country are financially illiterate.😂🤣👍
@@jabreck1934 If you were old enough to benefit from Proposition 13, you are fortunate. I am a real estate investor; I divested in California 2 decades ago. Sorry you are egocentric and financially illiterate.
Unfortunately Californians are invading my red state. It's has caused the locals cost of living to skyrocket!! Traffic is so congested now. Schools are overcrowded. So, I'm afraid it will be like Florida soon
Thank you , Lisa...these Videos are really appreciated !.....I'm curious what other states have you considered moving to ??......How's Truman ?...Take care..
People continue to live above their salary. Over indulgence, buying things they don't need. Yes, cost of living is higher but we all contribute an entitlement mind set.
It's all about greed. Money, money, money, money, money! Since the elections in 2020, and what (not who) we got for president, and Ron DeSantis's campaigning, I thought that politically, Florida would be the place to be. But I occasionally remember that Florida gets swamped and hammered on both sides by hurricanes, so I've remained very hesitant about going there for anything. I'm not even sure about Texas. Get sucked up and blown to pieces in a tornado. I live in San Diego County, California, and SoCal has almost everything in geology and landscape anyone could wish for. You can see the world without leaving the state. But politics here are in some ways more corrupt than anywhere else in the nation, and my idea of the next best place is possibly Arizona. Nice, warm, and sunny. Whatever. Florida? I don't know. Maybe someday, but I kinda doubt it.
Blahaha .. Mt. Pleasant, SC? Did Business Weekly check that out? According to Google data, the cost of living in Florida is 1% higher than the national average. Mar 14, 2024 While the average cost of living in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina's is 14% higher than the national average. 😂 7:14
I know some people who have lived there for 20 years and some people who just moved there. The main reason you want to stay away is the Cockroaches it doesn't matter if you're buying old place or a new place the whole state is infested
