Moving to Jacksonville FL For a New Job 🌴Guide For New Residents | DMV, Declaring Domicile, SunPass

RESEARCH THE AREA OF YOUR NEW JOB AND WHERE IN JACKSONVILLE YOU PLAN TO MOVE:
Establish commute times and what the surrounding areas are like.
ESTABLISHING FLORIDA RESIDENCY
If you don't plan to own property in another state, you are considered a Floridian when your true, fixed, and permanent home is in Florida.
If you do plan on owning property in another state, you are considered a FL resident once you file for a declaration of domicile and it's approved.
DRIVER'S LICENSE & VEHICLE REGISTRATION
For new residents you'll need to get your Florida Driver’s License and register your vehicle within 30 days of establishing residency in Florida.

HOMESTEAD EXEMPTION
Florida residents can apply for a Homestead Exemption. You get a discount on the assessed value of your home and it caps the amount that your assessed value can go up each year. Many Florida homeowners enjoy this tax benefit. Remember, your deadline each year for registering is March 1st! You will do this through your Property Appraiser office in the county you reside in or through their website.
PET REGISTRATION
All pets in Florida are required to have a pet license. Any local veterinarian can help you with getting a Florida pet registration form for dogs & cats older than 4 months old. Your pets must have a pet license, and all must be current on rabies shots or booster shots. Florida pet registration fees will vary from county to county, so check your county’s website.
E-PASS / SUNPASS
In Jacksonville, we are only doing designated toll lanes for express lanes only but Florida has a lot of toll roads and only a few of them are ones you can pay at a booth. If you live in an area with toll roads or plan on doing a lot of driving in different parts of Florida, you may want to consider getting a SunPass or an E-Pass.
