Temp residency via marriage is definitely easier - we visited the Immigration office in our town one day and I got my card the next. 24 hour total process. Yes on the Apostilled docs - you can get them done within a week in the USA.

There are non-financial ways to get legal residency that we cover in this video. Also, you can come here and legally live for 180 days at a time without any legal residency.
Just completed the process in April for Temporary Residency. Started in Portland OR. We sentl preliminary information via email, then were assigned an appointment. Approved same day. Very efficient. Finalized in Progreso with help from Merida's own GoToGuy. Cards printed same day. Terrific.

I have been living in MX for 1.5 years now. MX prices are going up but are still significantly less than USA prices. One exception is if you buy anything imported from the USA they tack on a 16% VAT tax. You can get less expensive living by leaving the bigger and/or gringo towns and moving to a pueblo. We recently purchased a maintained 1500 sq ft home on 1/3 acre covered in fruit trees and very nice for 2.4 million mx pesos. (With the exchange rate I got of 20.4, and with notario fees it cost about 115k USD.) We live 30 mins outside of the state capital on a road leading up to the volcano in Suchitlan in the state of Colima. In the pueblo prices are at least 20% less than in the capital city. Learning good Spanish is necessary to not get charged more.

@@dovygoodguy1296 most areas have a 'tianguis' every week where you can go to buy direct from the growers, veggies, fruits, chicken, fish, shrimp, electronics etc. The prices at the tianguis are less than the grocery stores. Regarding groceries I have found no difference in honesty of shopkeepers. However labor will very often charge more if they think you are a stupid gringo. I was lucky to graduate highschool in Chile and remember my Spanish. A great resource here are your local expats, especially when you first arrive. My experiences here are very positive, most Mexicans are honest and caring.Hubby and I live comfortably on $800 to $1200 usd a month. That does not include rent as we bought our home. You will pay more in a gringo heavy location.

They particularly aren't looking for people who will segregate themselves in expat communities and not assimilate. They want people who are open minded, and willing to become part of Mexican society. @@josephsmith961 I believe Dovy is talking about the option to show that you are retired in your home country to get a permanent resident status in Mexico. The financial requirement is an income of at least $1,620 a month, which is very doable for many but not all American retirees.
This is why sooooo many people start out teaching English abroad and then quit to do something else, it's for the Visa drama. You have to get both a work Visa and a temporary resident Visa, but the company will take care of that so it's easier.
Oh, I like the temp. residency. We might just want to stay for a year before traveling to another country. Who knows. I would like to get the longer time with lower requirements rather than short term tourist visa.
This attorney & Jose Artega's attorney - seem to differ - when it comes to temp residency w/o financial 'requirements' - if - you get any SS check for any amount - if - your > over 65 ? -- Can you clear this up ? (the over 65 thing) He indicated any amount may qualify & is up to the consulate you apply at ? Could be as low as $1000 a month ? For retirees perhaps ?
I was over 65 when I applied, and we had to meet the financial requirements (permanent residency). Call your consulate or email them and they can tell you.

Don't ever think you can apply mx status easily all by yourself like you are in the US.. the mx gov makes it so difficult and complex that you almost must have a immigration lawyer to process papers for you.. I got my mx citizenship just this year but only after months of stumbling around.. Then someone told me they made the system difficult so the lawyers can profit from this..
I am famously not what anyone would call a "Techy" but with no real skills in speaking Spanish or on a computer but with plenty of research I was able to negotiate the complete process in the US and in Mexico. The process at the US Consulate went smoothly without a hitch. A few months later I went to the INM office in Ensenada at around 6:00am with all of my forms that I did on my computer and had printed before leaving the US anticipating getting in a long line to get another appointment hopefully within a couple of weeks. I was still the only one in line when the gate guard came and opened the gates at about 7:00. At around 8:00 a few other people began filtering in to what eventually turned into a line of about eight people when they opened the office doors at 9:00. I went in and sat down for about ten minutes before being called up to the desk, I gave them around $300us and my forms with my hand written consent letter asking for permission in Spanish that contained my name and few other things about what I wanted to do while in the country and why I wanted to move to Mexico. I went back and sat down on the extremely uncomfortable metal rod seats for another 15 minutes before being called into an office by a very cute young lady who quickly found out I couldn't speak Spanish before she called for another beautiful young lady in come in and help me. With my very limited Spanish and her very limited English we giggled while she asked me some basic questions confirming the information on the forms I had brought with me, she took some pictures and my fingerprints. I went back out and sat for another 20 minutes before she came out smiling and gave me my Resident/Visa card. Honestly the only thing that was difficult was sitting on those metal seats for close to an hour and not being able to flirt up to my ability in Spanish! They just make it sound like it could be confusing without knowing how to speak Spanish. Still smiling, I was eating freshly caught fish tacos within another 20 minutes. BTW-I went in with a big smile and confident things would go good but I also figured if anything went wrong I could always hire someone I had already lined up to help me if I needed it and come back another day.

What I know is that your first trip to the INM is just to set up an appointment and it's nearly impossible to set everything up online. When the appt comes, you may very well get turn away for some minor reasons.. Props to you for getting your papers with no Spanish/lawyer... btw just 40+ hours of Spanish on youtube will get you to the level you are able to speak to taxi, restaurants and shops..

Yes. You can apply for and be granted temporary residency. You don't have to actually be living there to do this. Get someone to help you as Jordan suggests here. It will make things so much easier. I have done that in Tijuana B.C. and have my temporary residency even though I am still living (and working) primarily in the U.S. We do visit often but all of the time you are a temporary resident and then a Permanent resident will count towards citizenship if that is your goal.
I'm Canadian and will be asking my Mexican girlfriend to marry me this month while visiting her in Mexico on a standard Tourist Visa. We will follow all of the Immigration Process in Mexico. Why would I need to go to a Consulate in Canada beforehand when it's not even the same organization as Immigration.

One of the questions on the application states if one has a criminal record in Mexico or any other country. Angela, I am in Sydney and applied last year for my PR card using the balance of my super. I got the process started in Canberra then went to Mex to get the physical card. It took me 2 weeks to finalise everything, I came back and continue to work planning to move there in the next 4 yrs. But I already have my card. I am 61 yrs old. So you should try that.

Hi Can you shed some light on becoming a citizen once one is a resident. I am trying to do that and it is so difficult. The test to take is ridiculous. I think they purposedly make it impossible. The test is even difficult for Spanish speaker.

Did I understand him correctly that if a married woman has her married name on EVERY document (passport, bank statements, etc), but obviously your name on your birth certificate will be your maiden name… that you have to have a sworn statement that you are the same person?? Where would someone get such a sworn statement? Would a statement notarized by a notary public be sufficient, or does it have to come from some government agency??

She would have to apply from Japan since you're not married yet. Once you apply at a consulate, that is the one you have to finish with for your visa appointment.

Look into becoming a permanent resident rather than a citizen. Your Mom’s BC might allow you to do so through Family Unity without financial requirements. As a perm resident you can do everything but vote and still have access to assistence from a US Consul should you need it.

Every consulate has a website where you can look under "foreign services". Under that you'll find the different visas and their requirements. McAllen, Texas has the lowest financial requirements.

I looked up the website for the consulates in Raleigh, NC and Washington, DC (the 2 closest to me) and they were all en Español with no English translations, so with my limited understanding of Spanish, I was unable to find anything of useful value on their websites. If I understand this correctly, for those who do not have a regular source of income, putting $ 40,000 into a bank account in Mexico is required for temporary residence. This would seem to exclude U.S. residents since Obama's unconstitutional FATCA law makes it illegal for a foreign bank to open or maintain an account for a "U.S. person" (citizen or resident) for an amount over $ 10,000. Would buying a property in Mexico for that amount qualify? Or would that have to be for $ 250,000 (or higher)?
No, the 40K has to be in a bank in the US. The 10K rule is only to make you report money you transfer here. So, if you were to buy a house or property here, a lawyer would put your money into an escrow account in the US, then do the transfer for you. They file the necessary paperwork with the IRS. Other money can be transferred via apps like Wise. The amount of money you have to spend for a property in Mexico is different, and usually considerably more, than the 250K investment requirement.
No you apply under family visa just like if you have a child in Mexico if u an immigrant you can get residency or marriage to a Mexican or have family that’s Mexican.
Hi Jordan, the US will never take your kids away. I don’t believe this would ever be a reason for political asylum. US laws, however, can order shared custody of the children. In that scenario, you may be ordered to NOT take your children out of the country. I don’t believe Mario’s specialty is US divorce law. I found this story very hard to believe. Not only everything you mentioned in your video. Security has gotten worse in a lot of areas that traditionally were secure or good. Nowadays is even more common see police commit crimes in coalition with criminals of all kind. And also the other big issue is that this government is so soft on crime, that bad people is embolden because of this. Of somebody really want to come to Mexico, you need to have means and know people here already, otherwise you will have a bad time with criminals and corrupt authorities.

There is the thorny issue of dual citizenship, because if you have legal problems in Mexico you might not be able to seek assistance from the US because your Mexican citizenship would prevail.....or so I've heard.

The plus to getting a Temporary Resident Visa first is that you can bring and drive your US plated vehicle for up to four years, otherwise you would have to sell or import your car and that would cost you up to $5 or $8 thousand dollars or more. The only down side is you would have to go to INM one more time just before one year has passed to renew it for three more years and then after those three years go in one more time to change it to a permanent resident visa.

I paid 5k for it two years ago , so paying $5-8k to import it would be terrible. The main reason I want residency to buy property and open bank account. If you choose to live in an area where there are already many expats you will experience higher pricing than if you choose to live away from expat areas. There are many places to choose from. Shopping at U.S. based stores will result in higher prices than shopping at local stores. It depends on how you wish to live.

Travelled to Mexico many times and the prices of food from local outlets, not big box stores that are usually in touristy areas, are cheaper and probably healthier bc they are not from corporate farms [which have to spray multiple chemicals to protect their crops [monocultural thus inviting disease]
I pay around $600us per month for a furnished one bedroom guest house in a upper class area that includes all utilities paid along with cable for tv and hi speed internet, that also includes maid service and laundry done every two weeks and my landlord is more than happy to feed me every now and then. I spend less than $200 for groceries and I go out for freshly caught fish tacos con todo for $1.30us each at least three times a week for lunch. If I don't feel like making something for breakfast there is a place I can walk to right down the street where I can get huevos rancheros with fruit, coffee and unlimited hand made tortillas for $70 pesos or around $3.80us. I can get avocados for .50 cents along with organic fruit and vegetables at a little tienda right across the street. Things have gone up for me a little bit since I moved here last year but that's mostly due to the dollar to peso exchange rate. I also live in what is considered an expensive city in Mexico. I spend less than a third of what I was spending to live in the LA area.
Question: when moving from Temp to Perm residency, do you have to show financials? When we renewed the temp residency for 3 years we were asked to show financials in Colima.
@@hagendf I got a response from exo immigration. However in Colima they did require financials and the guy was a Dick. Only wanted to see what was in our mexican bank accounts. Fortunately I had xferred funds over to buy a house and during the house paperwork wait I was investing in 28 day increments in the MX bank account. So every 28 days I had about 150k dumping into that Mx account. But like I said he was a Dick and not normal. Below is the response from exo: In a temporary residency renewal you won't have to show any financial statements, Also, when you apply for your permanent after 3 years, It won't be necessary to show any bank account or financial status either. However, the renewal is a process in which you will need to meet a list of requirements. We will be happy to help you during your process. They may ask how much your current income is but I do know that if you originally qualified through your proof of a continuous monthly income through a pension you are not required to prove it again. They may have changed some things in order to keep up with those who were able to qualify with only needing to show six months of the required income or if you showed the savings requirement for the obvious reason that you may not have any money left or any money coming in to still be able to support yourself and thus have become a burden on society. They may just want to see if you are still able to support yourself, but it probably would only require around $800 to $1000us per month since the average Mexican citizen makes around $500us.
I agree with them, you can live off of social security quite easily in Mexico. And there are other ways to get residency than just financials as we discuss in this video.
the financial requirements are skewed. very few 18-19 yr olds are making 2700 a month. in most cases at 18-19 yr olds are just starting to work. it should be different age brackets
They don't want anyone coming here that can't take care of themselves. It cost the same amount of money for younger people to live here as it does older people.

Wrong. They came into a jazz club in Merida and made everyone show their passports or visas. No visa, they took you straight to jail. The days of blowing off immigration are over, so don't give people bad advice that will cause them a whole lot of grief.
If one of your parents was born in Mexico, there is a path to obtain a Mexican birth certificate through that parent's citizenship. You can then apply for citizenship, and subsequently obtain a Mexican passport if you should so desire. Our children are in the process of doing this as one of us is from Mexico. Several documents are required but it is very doable.
