I honestly did not have high expectations before I moved from Uganda to the US. I knew life was going to be challenging, and I embraced it as it came. I took one step at a time and kept telling myself, "This is a process." This phase will pass. That is how I have managed to live here, and I do not desire to live in Uganda. If anything, I do not even miss it. I struggled too much in Uganda, and seeing a light at the end of the tunnel was very difficult, maybe because I'm an orphan and I had no relatives to support my goals. I learned to braid my hair and do my own things, so I try to be positive, and this has helped me move through life. I have never cared about the ridiculous questions people here ask about Africa because such people do not even have passports. I call them banyachalo or America, so I'm not bothered.

Many US citizens do not have passports because you can drive for days and not leave the US but visit very different places. Others, like my family, have passports and use them often. While we have not been to Uganda (my wife has a medical condition that affects her immune system), we have friends there, and Anglican Bishop Henry Luke Orambi of Uganda led a men's weekend of my church a few years ago.

Everything you said was on point. My goodness, living in America isn’t easy as people think it is. Rent cost, hair, getting a job and etc. Even though I was born in the USA but raised by African parents, America is not what people think. I honestly love it in Africa. Lol the money factor is hard but I still love it. Having the opportunity to visit Uganda has been good but yes like any African country, it has its challenges. I love the peace here. Thank you for sharing. God bless you 🙏🏿

God bless you too!! 🫶 and yes as hard as it is at times here, it is easier when it comes to certain things, like you said.. the peace. Home is always best tho, however hard things may be over there. Thank you for your comment!!

If a kid asks about your culture, they are genuinely trying to understand and know you. The questions may be silly to you, but they are asking YOU. So already they consider you friendly enough to ask and already you are the expert. They are asking you to be their teacher and further their knowledge. That is a compliment. If an adult asks you a question and they sincerely want to know about life in your country, using dumb remarks two or three things can be true. 1) They can just be mean, which happens. They are not just mean to you, those people are mean to anyone really. 2) Think, to yourself, MAN, the USA has sucky public schools and it isn't this persons fault they don't know the difference. 3) Everything is dependent on the region you are in within the USA. The South is much different than the North, which is much different than the Mid-West states, which is much different than the East Coast. Racism is everywhere. People are both curious and isolationists. Good luck on your endeavors.

i mentioned the questions because i received them on multiple occasions and it was just something that came as a shock to me because i never expected it. moments like that helped me understand that sometimes the ppl that ask these questions may not be as exposed which is totally fine. i just mentioned it because it is something that happens, and in case somebody that has never been in a situation like that ever experienced it, i was just letting them know that it is normal that some ppl here ask things like that :)

Some people in the USA just don't know better! We all got here from somewhere else, but have forgotten that fact!

Well said, I think America is better than Canada in terms of Friendliness and job opportunities. American are way more open and say things from their mind compared to Canadian. I’m saying this because I have worked with American here in Canada and they we the African much better even than the Canadian white.

i can't compare bc i haven't been to Canada but Americans can definitely be nice and friendly when they want to be.

@MarthaUnfiltered 11 месяцев назад
Hi Mary, as far as i know, you could try applying for an employment-based visa, and i think in order to get it, you'd have to have a job offer from an employer in the US. that's what i think but i'm not 100% sure.

I know you are from africa so you may not completely understand why diversity is required. Some of those issues with getting a job or even getting into school are the reason. So things like HBCU were invented. Be very cautious making these types of statments because there is a history behind it. Also yes the pricing of hairstylist is ridiculous and genuineness can have some cultural issues behind it this would be a great conversation to have with americans from all demographics for clearity. PLEASE PLEASE do your research because you said a lot of good but some your words can be used as weapons to hold people that look like you back. People will remove your other point and just point at the one.

Hey Daniel, if you have somebody who knows someone that lives in the US, you can ask them to contact that person to ask them if they can try and seek support on your behalf in their respective Ugandan-American community. Hope this helps!

If a white person from the US or Europe moved to Uganda and applied for a job, they wouldn't experience a similar degree of discrimination? Just wondering.
