When I did warranty for Walmart back in the early 90s I had to readjust throttle cables just like this on the Murray lawnmowers every one of them was out of adjustment just like depicted here, great job Taryl and thank you for all of your help
I think you just helped me out brother. Me and wife own a 2013 Cub Cadet LTX1050 with a Kohler V Twin. It has something similar to that. I got it to choke but, it doesn't idle all the way down. Thanks Taryl!
This happened to me with a Deere. Of course I only discovered this very thing was the issue AFTER taking the carb out and cleaning it, and after another hour of diagnosing and ruling out safety switches. Boy I felt silly for not checking the easiest fix first.
Only one thing to say .. OLD SCHOOL IS TRUE SCHOOL ive learnt so much from you , keep up the great work your doing and thanks for all your time and effort and your crew to teach us Newbies the common sense on how to fix lawnmowers etc. Your a dying breed please continue doing what you do best and thanks again for your time...andy uk
Hi TarlyI have a question don’t know if you’ll get to thisI don’t want to take too much of your time I know you’re busy. I have a Craftman LT 2000.Rider, that someone gave me it spins freely and won’t start took the plug out spun the fly wheel spins way too freely. I put a screwdriver it in there don’t feel anything. I just want to know if you can guide me where to go on this. It turns over but don’t start spins very very freely. Thanks for all your tips. Keep on going. Thanks, Kevin.
Hey grassrats.......my two year old oem battery on my cub cadet died. I replaced it with a auto zone u1-1. Starts right up. I installed a sun energise 20watt solar charger/ maintainer. Did I waste my time and money? Thanks grassrats!
I haven't yet worked on a craftsman ride on mower but this is a great tip to let sink in for possible future repairs. Thank you for another great tip Taryl 👍
Taryl; Completely off topic from the video, however, I'm sure you can guide me in the right direction. I have several Kee push lawnmowers and only one is complete. The others are lacking parts, mainly blade spindle. These mowers were last produced in Florida by Trailmate and I beleive Ariens acquired them in 2010. Any idea where I can find parts new or used.
Love yur videos, would the choke not closing fully lead to a hard crank (stall even) as if compression too high 18.5 Briggs intek did valve job (just lapped) set valve lash at .004 there is a bump for compression release (working), what should I go to next Battery or starter, battery 4 years old, previous owner ran it with blown head gasket so I assume a whole lot of cranking to start it and possibly burnt up or wore out starter, not sure which way to turn, bore was in excellent condition worth fixing, got a number for the spring on the throttle linkage?
On mine, the plastic housing of the air filter box makes contact with the butterfly valve, I had to file some of it away otherwise the choke would stick on. Easy to check, just remove the air filter filter, you'll soon see if the flap has full movement.
Hey I have a toro rider, and I have an in-line shut off gas valve. If I happen to forget to shut the gas off when I'm done mowing the gas will fill up my crankcase. What's going on with that? I'm getting tired of changing the oil and filter everytime I forget.
i put a briggs 14.5 on my cub 1042 to replace the pos courage. My ? can i pull a vacuum somwhare to install a fuel pump or do i need to relocate the gas tank whare the battery is now?
hi taryl,I have the choke throttle lever on my john deere s130 and don't care fir it it revs fast gotta turn up down right away wish had a separte lever for choke can I make one thanks good video later taryl
Don’t forget about that silly anti backfire valve. I’ve had them stick closed, especially after waking it up from its winter slumber. Just gently tapping on it and cycling the key a few times has gotten them moving again with no more issues. Great tips as always Mr Dactyl!!
I have seen that clamp just shake loose, and with an owner that definitely didn't touch anything on the motor since he bought it... I blame slackers at the factory.
I have 18.5hp craftsman I rebuilt 1st time. Used crank new & head, piston n rod new- honed n seals. Pre-oiled parts. Assembled it n hard to crank by hand with plug out. Thought I had everything meshing right n facing the correct way. No doubt I have to retake all apart. Have a idea what to check?
Hey Taryl, I've got one of those B&S 16hp opposed cylinder engines that wont start when it's hot. This seems to be a common problem with this engine. Is there a fix for this issue? I've replaced the carb and the coil.
I sure need to. Thank you. To be honest, when I clicked on this and I saw you at first to myself said this goober isn't going to show me anything and you absolutely showed me exactly what was wrong with my lawn mower that I've been working on for 2 days. I went out pulled my throttle cable but my choke was stuck shut. I pulled that lever back fired right up. Thank you thank you thank you
Had the same problem with my $10k Ferris mower with the Briggs engine. The Ferris does have a separate choke, however the choke was not closing all the way, just needed a little tweaking . Thanks for the video.....
I suffered for years with this. Mine is a Craftsman, 13 years old. Worked fine for one season. Got warranty guy out, and he did the adjustment, but it slipped back. I looked everywhere online after and found the cure on a similar video. I haven't had the problem for a few years now.
On the bigger John Deere (X series) the 10 conductor connecter near the key switch needs cleaning and tight reassembly so the Carb fuel shutoff solenoid operates. When you turn the key on slowly, you should hear or feel it click with your finger.
Great Video Taryl. The same thing has happened to me twice but with push mowers. They said them wont start when cold, I adjusted the cable and they run like new.
What do you do when your carbutretor rods start to knockin' real bad Mr. Dactal ? rebuild the carbutretor ? I don't want to throw a rod ! Whooo there's ya dinner baby!!!!🤪
I have also find a lot of times that the choke shaft return spring will break and not allow the choke to open when moving the lever from choke position. Therefore the engine will flood out preventing it ftom running.
