MOXF vs MOTIF ES 2 of 3 

I have both the Motif ES7 and the MOXF6. I definitely prefer to trigger the MOXF pianos and other dynamic sounds through MIDI from the Motif. The key action of the ES is so good, so classic. The MOXF6 action, while slightly improved from the earlier MOX6, is still hard to play evenly and with nuance. On the other hand, I like the cleaner sound of the MOXF samples, enjoy the extra insertion FX and Voice elements (including key off sounds), and often will use it for sounds that don't require so much dynamic playing. I do think that overall the sound of the MOXF is thinner than the ES, but I tweak my patches extensively, and usually apply appropriate EQ to each Voice Element to balance the bass/treble tonality of my go-to voices (piano, Rhodes, bass, strings, organ, synth brass). You'd be amazed at how much difference that makes. Also, to widen the stereo field of stereo samples (mostly the pianos and strings) I use the Panning Key Follow setting to position notes across the l?R outputs as you move up and down the keyboard. Finally, if you aren't sure you'll be running in stereo on a gig, you can set up monaural versions of the piano patches that may not sound as wide as in the studio or on headphones, but will not suffer the dreaded phase cancellation of summing stereo samples to a mono speaker. I was using stereo in-ear monitors for my keys on gigs, and did not realize how awful the piano sounded coming back to the rest of the band on single channel monitors. It sounded like a harpsichord. Now, I rarely use stereo piano sample patches on gigs and both the Motif and the MOXF still sound great.

There are many MOXFs...but few good tutorials on how to really use them, recording, sequencing, MIDI intereaction with other instruments, the arp library, 4 part vs 16 part. You could get many views and subscribers with such a series, as this keyboard will be around a long time. EG: how to lay down a practice drum and bass track. How to use the chord following to jam....How to use all the MIDI channels....what the USB can and cannot do.... I'm subscribing to encourage you :)

Very interesting. I have MOX but don't like the sound. How do you think Motif ES is better?
