I think that at $300 this wheel is a great option for someone trying to get their very young kid into racing. But youre right.. at the current price, just go for the R5 or fanatec DD r2r.
Dude in most countries it’s not possible, the r3 is the only dd option for most 3rd world countries, e.g where i live in south africa, the r5 is 300 usd more expensive than the r3 and the fanatec 5nm rr is 450 more
The best thing about moving to DD wheel was how quiet it is. I can play at night without the annoying belt whine that used to really bother me with my old thrustmaster wheel
Plus you don't feel every single gear teeth touching each other and you don't have to worry about breaking it just by turning with a little bit of extra force
I just got the R5 bundle and its exceeded all my expectations. Between the price, quality of parts, affordable upgrades, range of options, and software, Its the best sim racing setup I've had to this day. I've gone from logitech, to fanatec, to Moza. Fanatec is equally well built, but significantly more expensive. Almost twice as expensive in some cases. I got the R5 bundle for just slightly more than the price of the Thrustmaster T300. For a direct drive option, you cant beat that.
If they included the same rim as the R5 (bigger, fully round, and actual leather), but with the Xbox buttons from the R3, it'd be the perfect beginner combo IMO.
@@GregoryShtevensh Yeah maybe. I'm 100% a noob to sim racing, so I didn't know wheel size made that much of a difference. I guess it depends on the person. I personally wouldn't be just like wailing away on stuff that I paid hundreds of dollars for, but I guess if you get into an intense race and you're in the moment, anything can happen lol.
@kasper_429 I have used a 270mm a 300mm and a 350mm on my csl dd. It's more about finding the right sweet spot for dynamic range you have available. If you think of the forces of the sim in terms of percentages, then you still need a range that can fit all forces, from 1% to 100%. The actual sim, at 1 to 1 could be upto 10nm for gt3 cars and higher even under certain circumstances. 3.9nm is actually still enough to provide that range, but it needs higher details at lower forces, and a small enough wheel, so that forces at 100% still feel substantial. I find If I want to drift, 350mm is fine. But for any racing on the limit of grip, I want more like 300mm. And in some cars, with an 8nm base, I can better replicate what these cars might feel like at 10nm, when I'm using 270mm of leverage, and the real car has 310mm of leverage (in the wheel). I prefer 300mm for GT cars and basically anything that isn't drifting. But on a weaker base, I do think 280mm will make better use of what you have. And the overall strength needed to drive it will be lower, with a wider wheel diameter, regardless of the base
The r5 comes with exactly the same rim aside from the fake leather wrap. The larger round rim you are talking about is an add on along with the formula rim. So you will be able to put them on your r3 rim also.
Glad to see more entry level options but I do wish it was slightly cheaper considering the cost cutting they've taken. Currently though if I were to go for a wheel I'd likely get this one as it's only a little bit more than the Logitech G920/923 over here and it's just so much more versatile. I do also like the small form factor and it makes it way easier to mount on my desk or even a smaller rig. The only issues for me are that rim and the pedals, that round rim you showed is $110 here and the upgraded SR-P pedals are about $350 including Clutch (CRP are $650 so way out of the question). Still comes out cheaper than the R5 bundle though which is $850 with the same SR-P Lite pedals, so all in all around $1200 for an R5 Bundle with the slightly upgraded pedals or $1500 with CRP, both which are just way too much currently. Unfortunately no presence here at all from Fanatec or the others so there's not even an alternative outside of Logitech currently.
In the UK and just placed an Order for the R3 and Brake performance via a reseller. Also looked at Fanatec CSL bundle but as they are direct purchasing the cost when factoring shipping and taxes, and the potential upgrade to QR2 (maybe not required) was quite a significant jump. At least £100+ extra (£200 with QR2) so takes it out of budget for me for my first wheel.
To comment on the brake, I played with the curves a fair bit and finally got one that feels like the brake Inhad on my G29 with the TruBrake mod installed. Took some getting used to, but it made trail braking so much easier and consistent, especially on ACC.
I second your opinion about D-shaped wheels. They offer no benefits over round ones. Looks may be a plus but that is objective and doesn't outweight the usability constriant.
Even though you'd have to buy a whole new pedal set for $160 to get a load cell, fanatec's load cell upgrade is $150 alone so i'd say the moza route is better anyway
You mention Fanatec, problem is its not sold in all markets, im moving back to NZ and it made no sense to buy Fanatec as would have had no warranty support
Also, I did end up doing the S-RP Lite to S-RP upgrade, and as I play mostly on PC now, there is a way to use an old S-RP Lite break pedal as a clutch by just remapping it in games or using something like Simhub Control Mapper
Doesn't work, Moza responded to other reviewers stating the games that are not supported like ACC, F1 24 etc are being blocked by Xbox and don't expect them to change anything within the software
I still feel like the CSL DD from Fanatec is the better (beginner) option. It costs 40€ less, has 1.1NM more tourque out of the box and can be upgraded to 8NM instead of 5NM with a beefier power supply. Whereas when you want similar tourque form the Moza you'd need to ditch the R3 and get the R9, which is 439€ on its own.
here in my country indonesia, CSL DD cost whopping $1k brand new, $1.3k with the 3 pedals setup, on the other hands the r3 and r5 cost $550 with the same 3 pedals setup. in fact, the r5 cost $10 cheaper than the r3. so i think this the go to beginner option in my country, btw r5 and r3 only cost around $60 more than a t300rs
I wanted to buy this for my son, sadly the r3 does not support ACC and F1 24. With a mail from Moza they have no idea when and if this will be updated with a future patch
I don't believe it's here until I can buy it anywhere.. it was supposed to come out late last year, and I never got any update on it from then.. in fact I kinda don't want to buy it anymore just for that kind of bad communication! (their website still said it was coming out last last year just a few weeks ago.. lol) Yes, I'm salty about it.. if you (don't) communicate like that, I don't trust you as a company! Their website still says, we will notify you when it becomes available, so until I can actually order it, I consider it vaporware.
@@HokiHoshi I had subscribed to that notification mail and didn't receive any.. nice. I'm salty as heck lol. Probably going for some other brand. Anyway thanks for the video and info.
Ok so I agree for PC users the R5 bundle on sale is the better way to go but if ur a pc user you are already pretty spoiled for choice when it comes to wheels. Xbox users on the other hand have very limited DD options. Thrustmaster has none. Logitech is over $1000 There’s the new Turtle Beach wheel which does give u a fair bit for the price but currently doesn’t have any upgrade part so may leave you wanting more And then there’s fanatec which if their WRC Xbox wheel was a leather wheel instead of Alcantara it would be the perfect deal as I could get a PlayStation base and an Xbox wheel and be good to go. But while i haven’t felt Alcantara b4 most reviews suggest wearing gloves due to it feeling rough and getting easily worn from sweat and all their other Xbox wheels are $400 which is the same price as the R3 anyway so I might as well just get the R3 and either wait for better options for PlayStation or get a fanatec
If this works with the TSW and the indicator stalks that are to come, it might be a compelling upgrade from my G29 if the Hori truck system isn't going to be good quality. Though the amount of buttons and a shifter that seams like what Logitech's could've become (seamless Sequential/H mode switching and buttons on the shifter (knob and Shifter housing)), as well as SCS being directly involved with the development do seam promising
So if I can spend $80 to 100, should I go to the R5 instead? Because a reviewer said the R3 felt better than the CSL DD / R5 because of technology or whatever. I'm casual simracer, so should I get the R3 or R5? And the R9 for a casual is overkill? Thank you :3
Thanks for this, still dont know what to fork out for though. 🤣 Think ill wait a bit longer. Got a feeling they will have a better version of this not too far down the line, since this bundle is technically a year old now!! 😂
I love racing but know nothing about these. What would you recommend the most out of all the available stuff for someone who isn't super good and a casual racing gamer but wants nice sensations ? All price points included
I would look at either the R3 or R5 bundles. The only real differences right now is the R3 having slightly less torque output and the Xbox compatibility. Both can be mounted to a desk with the included clamp. If you don't have a way of securely mounting the pedals (such as a rig or something else to screw them down to), then avoid getting the brake performance kit as it will make the pedals tilt back when you go to hit the brake. Fanatec does have the CSL DD bundle, but they are going through a ton of internal issues right now that makes customer service next to non-existent at this time.
Direct drive does sound appealing for Euro Truck Simulator. Driving down the highway with my Thrustmaster TMX, it is annoying trying to center the truck on the highway as the teeth on the force feedback gears do not provide a fine enough degree of movement. Bouncing over one tooth trying to keep the truck driving straight. Nobody talks about small movements like this in their reviews, but I suppose with DD it's a non-issue. X) Would be nice if my Thrustmaster pedals could plug into the Moza base, but looks like the plug is slightly different :(
It's not really down to the teeth or the belt but rather it's a matter of the sensitivity of the position sensor that tells how much the wheel has turned; on direct drivers it's much more sensitive
I mean if you want a round wheel and a clutch the r3 bundle will cost you (where i live) 568 euro. If you get the Fanatec Csl DD r2r bundle and buy the additional clutch pedal you pay 540 euro, and you get 8nm of force with a round wheel and clutch. Imo the r3 is very much overpriced. Which is quite funny, because rn their R5 bundle costs 509 euro. If you get a clutch pedal with that that will still be 553 euro. And although you dont get a round wheel, its still higher quality than the r3. And even the r5 still has less torque than the Fanatec CSL at that price point. I used to be a big fan of moza wheels, but it just feels like they are getting a little too confident as a "leader", with everyone being angry at Fanatec. Tbh Fanatec ruined their rep, but I´d still rather invest in one of their wheels. And if you wanted less torque you could just go for the r2r 5nm bundle from Fanatec and with a clutch and a round wheel straight from the box, you would pay around 440 euro. Yeah Fanatec ruined their rep, but there is no reason they couldn´t get it back. And they also didn´t stop existing because of that.
Only with something like a Drivehub I believe. Console doesn't support mixing and matching brands due to most of them having their own unique connectors.
Fanatecs cheap Xbox wheel is Alcantara 🤮 and their expensive wheels are the same price as the the whole R3 so R3 is definitely better for console players
Still trying to figure out what system to buy. I'm upgrading from a G920 on Xbox. Looking at the R3, the Fanatec CSL DD Ready to race Bundle or PXN V12 Lite. I prefer the wheel layout on the Moza but the other two have Leather wheels and more torque. The PXN has the most bang for buck but the software makes me nervous. I wish Moza had another more expensive Xbox version. Anyone have an opinion on these 3?
I put an 8mm dowell, wrapped in double sided foam tape, inside the foam block on the break, and added a 140mm damper to the break and throttle. It makes the break much stiffer, and allows for easy trail breaking without a load cell.
@sestenwhen I actually have a video going over my setup yes. Although I'm not sure I have the 8nm PSU yet in that video. It covers the srm emulator side of it though
From what I've seen, it is true as the Xbox chip is located in the steering wheel so *theoretically* you're free to use any Moza wheelbase you wish as long as you use the Xbox wheel with it
As long as the base has pedal ports you are good to go as you can’t plug pedals into Xbox separately. Last I checked the r9 doesn’t have pedal ports but it’s possible that has changed. The R5 and R12 definitely do though
Depends on the person really, for me somewhere around 7-10 is the ideal "sweet spot" where anything higher starts to have diminishing returns, but some people are perfectly happy with less, and some prefer much more.
Im currently on 5nm and I honestly I do not see any reason to have more at the moment. I’ve been told by many people that I will change my mind as time goes on, but it’s been a year (an awesome year) and my view hasn’t changed. It’s all in the settings in the end I think
If only Forza was any good on a wheel, it's horrendous because it is a controller game at heart, Turn 10 and Playground games need to get proper wheel users to help them
@@SIMRIG412the difference between the R3 and R5 is minimal and even if/when they do start selling the R3 wheel separately the R3 bundle will likely be cheaper than getting R5 Base + pedals + wheel
I don’t understand how you can recommend this wheel if it does not support two huge racing sims in the console marketplace namely Assetto Corsa Competizione and F1 2023?
Blame Xbox, Xbox are blocking them according to Moza support, to be fair though they've said so many different things to each reviewer it's hard to know what's the truth or what is just laziness on their end
They would be making a big loss on the whole bundle if they priced it lower than $400, *especially* in the beginning; honestly, not sure if they're not already losing money on it
@@Sithhynot losing money. R5 bundle are going for 400! So same wheel with a chip put in and buttons marked different, same pedals they have been making. So only the base is actually new so this could be sold at $299 where it would sell more
Kids don’t need DD get them belt drive for under $200 this is the cheapest DD you can get for Xbox and as hoki said better than any non-DD wheel so definitely not a waste of money
