Trust me, R5 is TOTALLY sufficient for most people. I have the R9 and only use a bit of its maximum potential. Also, there are many T150, T300, G29, G27, G25 racers who achieve INCREDIBLE lap times without tons of FFB.
Just watched some of your videos, cool stuff! Maybe one day I will get to a level of being competitive! Thanks for commenting. I agree R5 is way above my skill level already!
The default level of ffb on my R5 (capped to 20%) is perfectly fine for me, which is right in the sweet spot of immersion and arcadey comfort. It's still plenty strong without breaking your hands/mount.
Yeah well, that's the thing. 9Nm is the peak torque. It's the limit of the motor. If you're using max force all the time it's going to clip, lose detail, overheat and fade. You need the torque headroom to prevent this from happening and that's why the weaker bases make little sense. People will buy a 5nm wheelbase and set them to max torque after a week because that's what feels the best to them. That's why the Moza R5 and the CSL DD have so may overheating issues in longer races. I mean, just look it up. It's a known issue.
I just got mine Sunday so I haven't even had it a full week yet but I have to tell you I'm absolutely in love with it and with the arm workout that I get with just the 5.5 I can't imagine why I would want more than that.
@@MichaelSmithRaces what games are you playing? In aserto corsa wall impact is not transferred through to wheel on my device. It was with Logitech. What settings do I need to adjust for that impact sensation in the wheel
I have both assetas and quite a few other games but i seam to favor forza 5 . I've got The handling is so dialed in. For me the fun factor is through the roof for me
@SinisterSpatula Glad it was helpful! Although check my other overheating video everyone thinks I'm in an anti moza conspiracy now because my wheelbase was clipping : ) I stand by my comments from this video that its fine to clip when its detail you dont need!
Appriciate your insight on the never ending cycle of "I could spend a bit more" I did the exact same thing and the total cost was coming out at nearly £1000! I bit the bullet and order the R5 bundle after seeing this reivew and a couple others, thanks very much :)
I've had my R5 bundle for maybe almost a year now I was upgrading from a g29 which is in itself a great little setup. Direct drive is so much better. If anyone is on the fence and worried about the money just get the R5 bundle it's worth it. I would suggest getting a wheel stand tho like the omega apex because direct drive will tear your desk apart. Also the R5 crap pedals that come box with it are VERY basic. I would at least suggest getting the moza spring kit for the brake pedal.
Nice review! Just got the Moza R5 myself couple weeks back. Finally upgraded from Logitech G25 since I felt the price point was decent. Could not recommend this enough, just the smoothness of the force feedback alone is a game changer! For any new people thinking about getting into sim racing, my advice would be to find second hand Logitech bundle. They are widely available and cheap and after that if you enjoy the racing and you feel you might want more, start saving up for direct drive wheel like the Moza R5. Can prolly sell the Logitech around the same price you bought it. Personally I would not buy the gear driven Logitech wheels with retail prices at this point.
Does yours show the pedals are disconnected until you hit the gas or brake? Then it shows connected when I hit the gas. Drops within 1 second after letting go. Is that normal?
@@matthamilton3396 No, they show as connected all the time. Tho I haven't had time to play during summer time, probably there has been software updates since the last time I used my sim rig. But still, sounds a bit weird and I reckon this should not be happening.
It's all good for me with my R5 bundle. Just ordered the newly released 12" wheel for the R5. I don't want the wheel to break my arms, I just want to be able to feel what's going on the track. The R5 does that in spades. From the G29 I could barely stay on the track, to the R5 and won 2 races. Big difference. Love this bundle.
Nice ot hear from someone upgrading from G29! I will probably get the wheel mods sometime, how hard are they to change, would you consider changing it back and forth regularly, or is it too much work for that?
Does yours show the pedals are disconnected until you hit the gas or brake? Then it shows connected when I hit the gas. Drops within 1 second after letting go. Is that normal?
I have the R5 Bundle. I upgraded from a Thrustmaster T150. I have the brake mod installed, I even upgraded the springs, formula wheel mod installed. This bundle is great.
Looking at getting this wheel myself upgrading from the Logitech G29. Seeing a user over review over a few months rather then out of the box is a great help in making up my mind further. welcome to the 100 sub club
@@thecodex0994 oh rip my friend. I'm new to sim racing but in my country the G29 is weirdly expensive. So I'm thinking to just send it and go for the Moza R5 right away xD
Man I’ve been researching for two days and all I see is people saying yeah that’s great but 5.5Nm isn’t enough, the pedals aren’t great, and so on. CSL DD Ready2Race is the only competitor people give but they have a list of complaints for that too. Basically everyone recommends spending 1 to 2k or more. This is an expensive hobby for sure. Thanks for the great review!
Thanks for the comment! Thats exactly why I made the video, you can always spend more. If you are gaming on PC either the moza or fanatec will be a great starting point, I mean potentially still too expensive, but for me spending 300 on logitech vs 500 on moza was worth the extra, but im not spending 2K on a game!
It's enough man, don't listen to all these sim snobs with r21 and so on. They are more in the bragging hobby than the sim racing hobby. A dangerous path to go down because you have to justify yourself spending all this money and you do that by bashing the cheaper stuff. They are not having more fun, in fact I feel many times they seem bored and miserable even with their 15k rigs for the very reason I mentioned earlier. I have the r5 bundle and I'm having a blast, I feel no need for more power. In fact I lower it in every game because it's too strong and just take away from the enjoyment of driving.
Half the reason I just went with the R5 bundle is that I couldn't easily find the T300-RS bundle in the last week but it sounds like I won't have many regrets (besides console compatibility)
It is so true, once you are hooked you wanna get better stuff. Personally I regret buying a cheap seat and wheelstand, which is imo the most important asset.
same here, and i even had the touch more expensive ''cockpit'' in the shoppin cart and had the money for it. but figured that it is not that big deal lol. mistakes mistakes
To be fair im still injured so im just looking at this massive thing I cant use all the time and its taunting me constantly to 'just do a little bit of driving'. Cant win either way in this hobby!
The most affordable direct drive wheel in terms os cost, benefits and design. I have this one with the md wheel and the brake kit . Is important to mention that you need a proper cockpit to play, with it the clamps option could be not enough for the force feedback on a simple desk or basic cockpit
I had a G25. Then upgraded to loadcell pedals. Now after decades there was a new steering wheel on my list. I bought a Moza R9. I am very satisfied and can recommend it. The only negative point is that it is not supported by all games. However, all the big driving simulations work. Forza Horizon, Nascar Heat and Snowrunner, for example, don't work or don't work properly. Games tested: AC, ACC, American and EuroTruckSim, Automobilista 2, BeamNG, KartKraft, DiRT Rally 2.0, RaceRoom, Wreckfest all good.
Start small the amount of people who offload their entire rigs and setups on market place because they go sicko mode and find out they get motion sickness or don't have time 2 months after they build 1 is pretty common
Totally agree, even this is a pretty crazy financial investment if you are not already pretty deep into the hobby, but some people will spend that much on trainers, others cant barely afford rent! Dont spend more than you can afford just to get something that reviewers say is a little bit better!
@@MichaelSmithRaces my 🏍 i just passed it and stopped like i do a lot. Not racing sadly. Its in the family, my father raced opel commodores in the 70s and 80s, but i only drove bikes. Id love to do some rally, but i dont have the money😅
I just purchased a r5 bundle can’t wait to see how well it is compared to my thrustmaster tmx. I already have moza srp pedals so hopefully the direct drive helps me be smooth and quicker
Which games do you mainly play Cody? Was there anything specific about the TMX holding you back? You will have to let me know how it feels compared to a belt system, I think it will be significantly better!!
@@MichaelSmithRaces I play iracing dirt cars. I will post my review here when I get them. But the tmx thrustmaster is just clunky and random of vibrations lol
Thanks for this review!! Love it! Straight to the point. I left simracing two yrs ago (i had a SC2 Sport wheelbase and i was so competitive in iR) and now i would like to come back and buy this Bundle just to enjoy some solo laps or driving around. I will probably attach the base directly to the desk and leave stock pedals. Anyway, great review mate! Regards
@@DeltaInsanity nothing sim or game related. I just had no time to prepare any race, so i decided to quit and sell all my (Very expensive) gears. Thats why i’m looking forward to the R5, so i can enjoy it when i have spare time.
@@ZAKNIX1000 ahh gotcha. Well welcome back to sim racing! Yeah these new DD products at an affordable price are very appealing, I'm loving my R9 I got a few months back.
@SoMiSongbird upgrading to a DD is definitely a great option! If you already have the logitech though I would potentially look at something a little more powerful when you do make the switch!
Man, i wish I could make choices lol. I own a TS-PC Racer (Belt driven 6.2nm) which is at the end of its live. Im not a hardcore simracer, just a deskracer like you haha, so I'm looking into upgrading to a Direct drive. Debating between a fanatec CSL DD and the Moza R5 or R9. Moza R5 and CSL DD are bundle choices which are cheaper. R9 in combination with the KS wheel is just amazing, but 200euro more. Man I wish i knew what to get lol, i feel like the 5nm is not enough, thats why the CSL DD is amazing, just change powersupply and you're on 8nm.
@Nickinatorz for a desk setup the R9 is probably as high as you can go in terms of torque. I am personally not a fan of fanatec so im bias but the R9 + KS is a really great combo as the KS is miles better than the ES. I have a review of the KS vs ES that might help with your decision!
I have the 923 wheel and pedals and im really searching right now for a upgrade for myself. I've had them for so many years now that im surprised i didn't bin it 2 months in... Now though im actively researching and looking for a much better one. I wanted Fantec but with the issues they have right now I think really the best place would be moza. I'm just wondering what the difference is between the R5 and the R9 since that's the 2 im thinking of going for. Thank you for this videro. Really helped me with my research :)
@Gh0stPred if you have been using the logitech for a long time and you are sure you want to stick with the hobby I would skip the R5/9 and get a rig and go for something like an R12 / Alpha mini or higher. R5 and R9 are basically the same but the number is the power output so 5 vs 9 newton meters of force. They are entry level direct drive units, a huge upgrade of a gear driven logitech for sure...
@@MichaelSmithRaces honestly I tried at least 10 sets of pedals from hydraulic to load cell before i found the VRS DFP PEDALS they were a game changer even better than Huesinkveld plus
Pedals will make you faster, but a responsive wheel like any direct drive will make you more consistent than let's say a cheap Logitech wheel. So not necessarily faster when looking at lap times, but it will make you a more consistent driver. Just my opinion :)
I got this for home just to desk clamp when I feel like playing for a bit after work or whatever. Its awesome, although at times I wouldn't mind stronger force feedback but it is sufficient and a lot of fun. If I was to ever go to a proper rig setup I would probably get an r16 and dial it down to 9-10nm for certain cars. I'm pretty strong though and I find it entertaining to fight the wheel in a group c car or whatever but I wouldn't want to drive like that very often its pretty hard on your arms! But like you said now to build a high end rig it gets really expensive and my intension was to minimize expense, maximize fun but also I didn't really need a big setup as my goal was to do a bit of sim racing not spend most of my time doing it. There is a sim center near me that I go to with friends like 80 bucks a month gets us 10 hours of play time. There setups are like 25k with D-box motion, 49 inch curved screens etc. They use the r9 there although I think it would be better if they had some r12 or r16s. We can also bring our own vr headsets for it so thats also a plus. I started out with a logitech g27 at home back in 2016, then I got rid of it. couple years later found the sim center been going there for a few years because it made no sense to invest so much money into a rig when I could get a monthly pass. We used to get the unlimited pass for like 110 bucks a month which was an insane deal. Now the r5 bundle came out at a pretty good price point for playing at home and I need to be around the house a bit more these days so thats how I ended up with the r5. If I could recommend a really fun game it would be Raceroom, they have the sound, physics and ffb super dialed. Older graphics engine but my computer is like 9 years old anyway 🤣 cheers
@99MrJ99 that sim center sounds awesome! I hope more pop up with good equipment. Yes I definitely think desk use is fine, but its a gateway drug and then once you are hooked you start the build process, you have done well to restrain yourself! :)
i got the gt omega prime cockpit after i played sim racing for a few months i knew i wanted more so i got a better cockpit before anything else. i love it i now have t300 with rally wheel and loadcell got it right before moza came out with the r9 and stuff
Honestly, it's kind of disappointing that Moza chose to include the SR-P Lite pedals in the R5 Bundle. If they included the SR-P instead of the Lite, then the Moza R5 would be "perfect" for entry level dd bundle. However, I'm not saying that it's a bad option. It should still be a solid good option for beginners.
I've had my R5 for 5 months and it's amazing value! The updates are quite frequent and I appeciate that! My FF strngth is set at only 45-48% in AC and ATMS2! It's plenty strong and I'm an adult! I'm saving up money for the new KS GT wheel but it will be X-mas present to myself.
Good review from a beginner’s PoV. 👍 If you ever get to reviewing an R9 eventually, I’d be curious to see what you’d make of the difference. Loadcell pedals ditto.
I've got the R9 and SRP pedals. They impress me every time I drive. I've not had them long and have already clocked up 180hrs in the SIM 😮 I would definitely recommend the R9
How long have you had it? Are you in the UK? It was within the 30 day return period so I was just keen to get it sorted as I was using it on a desk at the time and repeatedly plugging it in. I guess they just had a bad batch of USB cables that were slightly mismatched with the plug? I considered just selotaping it in if they didnt want to replace it :)
@@MichaelSmithRaces I’ve had mine for couple months now. I use on a motion rig. It hasn’t yet been a problem. But I only just noticed how loose it was last session. Can’t believe it hasn’t given connection issues
I was looking at the R5 bundle with the clutch pedal and shifter because I want the new Truck wheel for ATS. I play some driving games on xbox here and there but can wait for support if it happens, until then I can continue using my controller.
@TechT1999 yeah that wheel looks great! Depending on how important XBOX support is for you, you can also use the moza truck wheel with other wheelbases, research the universal hub, which you can buy seperately!
Ι have had this for about 4 months as well, really happy overall. I had also gotten the break kit but it was impossible to use while desk mounted. Νοw I have a Next Level Racing 2.0 stand and I can use the kit. It helps but I am unable to use it for more than short amounts of time because it is so so stiff... I have a leg issue. I wonder if other people really want this amount of pressure. It is ok for track racing but for rallying where you lock easily it allows for very little movement to control the breaking. Another consideration is that I feel the FFB a bit dampened on this stand compared to desk-mounting.. This is a bit worrying but I need to research more about this stand. perhaps it has a bit more flex which is unfortunate and unexpected. Any comments on all this are welcome.
I went full rig because I didnt want to have to upgrade in future and I had a playseat challenge for a bit and I know what you mean that it dampens the feel, in the playseat atleast, because it all flexes and moves around.... I just bit the bullet but the key thing is whether you have space for it, I took over our guest bedroom!
I bought the R9 in China (as I live here and Moza is a lot cheaper) but I had already owned the G29. I went for the R9 instead of the R5 because of the load cell pedals. I like the video but one thing I would say to you Michael, is having seen your GR-Omega rig, you will have a problem if you upgrade to a three-pedal load cell setup. I have more or less the same cockpit and your pedal plate is going to be a pain in the proverbial as there appear to be no holes down the middle.
Yes I agree the pedal tray is a bit annoying... GT Omega sell a better pedal tray, but I will probably take a drill to the one that I have! (If I feel a need to upgrade) :)
I'm torn between this and the Fanatec 5nm bundle. I like the Mozer wheel more but I don't like the pedals, they look too slippery. I like the pedals from Fanatec more but the wheel looks so cheap.
@buttergolem8584 the Moza pedals are not slippery, I almost always used them with socks without any problem. I would say also that on PC there is no reason why you buy everything from one provider, they just like to make you think its best with a bundle deal, but you can get whichever pedals you like with whichever wheelbase (in most cases) as long as you can plug them both into the PC seperately via USB.
@@MichaelSmithRaces it was supposed to be a joke but I'm actually thinking of upgrading to this to play ac. I don't think there'll be a difference for ets2 though 😂
Regarding the strength scaling at 1:40, I don't think that's how it works. If the overall power is lower, it can scale down the whole graph instead of cutting it. So imagine writing 5Nm instead of 21Nm on the left axis. Therefore, you'll still feel a difference in the strength, but the overall power will be lower.
While im not an expert by any means I believe my explanation is correct regarding clipping. What you are saying about scaling is also correct in regards to turning down the strength % so the whole output is reduced at a relative rate. For anyone that wants a better explanation check out Aris Drives "How to FFB" he is the expert!
Hey, can you share your settings for ACC both in Pit House and in game? I just got my R5 yesterday and been struggling with the settings, I came from a Thrustmaster TX and there are things I liked better on my TX, so every help on the settings are appreciated 😊
Pithouse I use the GT Preset, ACC-Official: 900 steering angle, 100% force feedback. ACC I use 75% gain, 0 minimum force, 25% damper, 100% Dynamic Damping, 50% Road Effects, 400hz frequency, steer lock 900, steer linear 1, brake gamma 1 Hope that helps!! Working great for me. One thing is you probably need to set the settings then leave it for a while to adapt to it rather than keep tweaking settings all the time!

I bought the Moza R5 set this Tuesday to replace my noisy, miss/ double shifting up gears, throttle, and brake ghosting Logitech G920. It is a dream to operate, it's smooth, and the silent operation is great. The pit-house software is easy to install and use, tho the pedal settings leave me wondering. You can set a curve from 0 to 100 % in increments of pedal pressure, with me the 100% value does not stay at max yet drops to 0 while at 80% curve, it will stay on the max top of the curve. Why is that, and can I change it in some way? Still need to adjust myself to the brake pedal, which I have upgraded with the s lite brake addon. But sorting out the settings of any wheel and pedal set is imho key,, and is fun to sort out. And since I've got tendon problems (chronic golfing and tennis elbows)in both my elbows and my wrists ( chronic carpal tunnel-like symptoms) and arthritis in my hands, the FFB strength is more than enough for my usage. BTW the kitchen table setup I have, eventually must be replaced by a good rig, oh my poor wallet already is crying LOL
haha yes its a good hobby if you like to keep tinkering with it and adding new stuff! Sorry I cant be much help with the pedal settings as I am away at the moment so I don't have access. Hello!!! In Windows 11, do you foresee any updates for the Steam platform compatibility with games like forza horizon 4, the crew 2, bus simulations etc? Thanks...
Sorry but I dont know about this, Moza has settings that are configured for each game, but I think you can also do it manually so I would think that the steering wheel would work, but you would need to potentially map the buttons and things yourself? i hope you do a review on the ra1otion because i have an r9 and a ps5 and i really wanna play GT7 but im quite spectral of this adapter. also it seems that you can only plug in the wheel base and the pedals, that means you cants use the h pattern shifter or a handbrake or a buttonbox which sucks

I bought my moza bundle from them and then had very good service with the usb fault so they were my first choice for buying a rig. Then they came out with prime lite which is exactly what I needed. I started making the videos and people seem to have really liked them! Just start making videos!
Do you play ACC or AC at all? On both of those you can see the force feedback meter next to the pedal information, as I showed in the video. The trick is to set your wheelbase software to 100%, then set your game as high as you think, maybe try 80%, then drive around looking mostly at the FF graph and see if it goes red. If it does, its clipping and consider if you want to reduce the feedback gain, or live with it.

After 8 months, Moza es steering wheel, pedal shifter, left pedal broke. The place that holds the pedal shaft is plastic, so it breaks. My research is in this direction. Different people on reddit have experienced the same problem. I am a victim of this situation. Even if I contact Moza in China, my cargo and steering set will be damaged. It will not be good for me if I cannot play the game. Think twice when buying an ES steering wheel. I have used Logitech DFGT for 10 years and have never had any problems. Moza broke down in 8 months. I do not recommend it to anyone.
Thanks for sharing your experience @tiza41 sorry to hear your wheel broke... you should definitely contact Moza support as I'm sure they will get it fixed. I dont know which country you are in, but in the UK you could also return it to the retailer where you bought it often, so might be worth a try first if you are worried about shipping from China? I recently bought this exact kit and for the price, I am disappointed and will probably sell it and buy another from another brand like SimCube or Simagic. The pedals are VERY basic with a simple spring. The steering has buttons and a D-pad like those on Xbox controllers. When I showed it to another person, this laughed at it. Yes, I know I the sell a brake upgrade kit, actually I bought that one. I would say you get what you pay for, but I paid $600, not $300 or less. This purchase was a waste of money and time.
@odkdsjf It is a budget bundle to get started in the hobby for sure, although I think its still a great option in the price range. Take a look at my latest video which looks at a new loadcell mod for the brake pedal which makes it very competent.
I feel like Moza have tons more customers now, and maybe not an equivalent amount more support staff, seeing comments about slow responses on reddit...
I was told that GTR 2 is not supported with this wheel. Anyone who have tried playing GTR 2 with this wheel without any issues? (Out of the box, no mods)
😂 Oh, come on, it's a legendary title but I don't think hardware manufacturers should be held accountable for compatibility with software from 20 years ago. It would be like me moaning at Accolade and Logitech in 2008 because the G25 wasn't supported on Grand Prix Circuit.
@@williamwilson4705 I mean Moza R5 supports Richard Burns Rally that is as old (or even older) than the GTR2, so it's not completely off the cards that they release compatibility with GTR2
@wisdora88 yes. you have two options, you can set the max torque (power) in the moza pithouse software, or in each game. So its not too strong for them. BUT I would say its much overkill unless you will also be using it yourself I would get a cheap or second hand logitech or thrustmaster or similar for an 8 year old!
Not directly, the newer R3 supports xbox natively. It looks like you can get the steering wheel from R3 then it would work with other moza wheelbases on xbox but Moza have not announced it, other option is a brook ras1ution 2 adapter but I have not got one yet for my playstation.
No, did my explanation about clipping make sense? Its more than enough to feel when your tires are pulling against you around a corner so you can lean against it nicely. Although I dont have experience with a heavier wheel to compare against! Im very happy with it.
