After what must have been a most convivial lunch party with Herr Engel the Court Organist in Leipzig and his family on16 May 1789, Mozart dashed off this, extraordinary piece into their family album.
J S Bach had been the most significant musical presence in Leipzig for over quarter of a century in an earlier era.
The Gigue (Jig) is an energetic boisterous dance often the final movement of his Keyboard Suites and his Gigue Fugue for organ is a good humored spirited piece.
Mozart's Gigue is a delightful and apt memento. Its thirteen note theme (Subject) uses all twelve pitches:( notes 3-4 is an octave leap on G). It is angular, even a bit zany as it barrels cheerfully along offering no mean challenge to play!. nc

Thanks for comment Jackson: you may have noted in the description how this was just dashed off by Mozart in the family album of Leipzig Cathedral organist. after lunch! The custom was to write sine thing polite in the family album. Tschaikovsky used it in his Mozartiana orchestral suite. He slowed it considerably and lavished all the color of the full orchestra so it becomes very Grave & dignified almost a lament! A different piece but still wonderful. I think T did it to really emphasize the extraordinary harmonies. It is also that the “subject” ie opening uses all of the 12 pitches which must have struck him. In a way it prefigured the 20 century & atonality etc etc !! T adored Mozart: when allowed to take the manuscript of Don Giovanni in his handsT writes he “felt in the presence of the Divinity.”.Thank you for the comment: it was fun fir me to listen to it again ! . Everbest Nigel

What's amazing is that Mozart just dashed this off in the guest book after having lunch with the organist of Leipzig cathedral. He deserves the big "Bravo. Tchaikowsky loved it and set it for orchestra. Thank you for your kind words Jesse. everbest.. Nigel

Did you notice that the subject for the gigue is a straight lift by Mozart from the subject of the B minor fugue from Book 1 of the 48? He's change the key and time signature and the total character, but it's unmistakably the same. I first noticed this when starting to learn the fugue after I retired just over 3 years ago (I played the gigue for an exam in 1971), and, try as I might, I've been unable to find any other reference to the link between the Mozart gigue and the Bach fugue. Lots of words have been written about the gigue, but no-one, so far as I can find, has spotted Mozart's inspiration for writing it. I understand that the night before writing this into the Engel family album, Mozart had been improvising on the Thomaskirche organ. I wonder whether he played the gigue and Engel asked him if he could have a copy?

your points are well taken! very hawk eyed of you! I must say the accepted tale that Mozart just dashed this off at drop of a hat on point of departure always felt dubious to me! Your hunch re the improvising seems much closer and credible. Thank you very much for this most perceptive comment . NC
