If the Mityana South Member of Parliament, Richard Lumu's, plans succeed, the next Leader of the Opposition in Parliament will be elected by Opposition MPs in the August House, rather than being nominated by the leading opposition party as per the current tradition. Parliament granted the Democratic Party legislator permission to present a Private Member’s Bill, which seeks to change the process by electing both the Leader of the Opposition and the Chief Opposition Whip through a vote among Opposition Members of Parliament. However, amidst all this, the National Unity Platform Party has attributed this latest move to burgeoning calls for accountability from members of the public. The NUP leadership has also vowed not to be sidetracked by this development and will maintain their focus on their core party objectives.
