MPC Film was proud to lead the visual-effects work on 1917, with approximately 600 artists contributing to the film, which was shot almost entirely outdoors on locations around the United Kingdom. To execute Mendes’ groundbreaking, innovative vision required intensive planning and collaboration across multiple departments, in particular camera, production design, sound, special effects and visual effects.

I would literally pay money to get a version of the film with just this. This is a master class course level stuff for anyone interested in film making, especially tracking shots.

As a fellow VFX artist (programmer), I’m glad that my assumption was right that there are digital doubles to hide the cut. As well as digital foregrounds, but it’s invisible and well hidden with a camera move behind their backs, so that textures that close up will be blended in motion blur. I was shocked to find out, though, that in the last battle sequence (where Sco is running to the Colonel’s bunker) that there was a dirt road there. It’s so flawlessly composited (at least on my HD TV :) ). That shot must have been a hell, to create, frankly I didn’t see it and I watched it twice after finding that out. So kudos! It’s one of those shots that “seem” simple but are laborious and taxing, especially with the 100s of extras running across that road and real dirt mortars going off.I think you could come a long way with keying their army greens and comping it on top of a 3D grass plate but having the CG dirt be behind the me is still a roto nightmare (but perhaps that was just the sort charge). But the amount of cleanup in that long shot, must have taken time and effort. And what I wonder is whether you walking on a cascading nightmare! You probably need to work in sequence if your team, if you want to keep it all lining up and matching up. In my job as a programmer, I always had to really coordinate the teams to get the interfaces between components just right to match up. But in technology you can force that. In VFX you can’t so you need to have all elements shared between two shots lined up perfectly. Lot of Nuke scripts were probably shared between compositors :)

What is roto?
@RomainDelmaire
@RomainDelmaire 4 года назад
@@swifttodeath It's when you detour an footage frame by frame...well, the computer interpolates between 2 key frames so sometimes, you can get away with, let's say, detouring every 5 frames or so. But sometimes, like with clothes for example, you gotta do it frame by frame. It's basically to keep the FG footage and replace the BG when you don't have a green screen...it's painful and everybody hates it. But as someone else mentioned, it's most likely some luma keys for this scene. A luma key is...let's say you have a gradient from 0 to 1 (0 being black and 1 being white), everything at 0 will be transparent, everything at 1 will be opaque, everything a 0.5 will be semi transparent. You can obviously control the range so everything from 0 to 0.75 is completely transparent...it's just an example of course...it's almost never as simple as just 0 to 1.

@Xiox321 4 года назад
@@ramendraaich1265 Roto (rotoscoping) is when you trace a moving object frame by frame to either create an animation, or in this case a mask so they can put stuff behind the water. It's an extremely tedious process because you are often tracing small details over and over and over again. Luminance keying is is when you create a mask based on the brightness of the pixels. Sort of like a green screen, except it's using brightness values rather than hue/colour

00:26 WOW I didn't know they had to create digital doubles to connect two shots. I guess it's just much harder to make this "one-long-shot" movie than we normal people think. And of cause it's based CG technology advanced enough to be able to make digital doubles looking complete real even in closeup shots.

Sometimes I kinda wonder how these movies win the vex award over stuff Lion King. Don’t get me wrong, I am happy this won, but I think I might have an answer that isn’t the continuous shots. Sometimes, it’s not what it’s CGI on sight, sometimes it’s what you don’t see that is obvious CGI. Some movies cleverly hides that fact.
