MPG-01 Masterpiece Gattai SHOUKI: EmGo's Transformers Reviews N' Stuff 

For those unaware, all of the Trainbots' character models were pretty G1 toy-accurate, right down to the partsforming and the flattened train-fronts split open on their backs (which would form rocket packs in the cartoon), so this Shouki is actually a little more accurate to the cartoon than the Moon Studio one. That being said, I'm not telling anyone which version should be seen as the definitive "Masterpiece" version as they're very apples and oranges and mostly come down to personal preference. The TakaraTomy ones are going for HO scale train modes, which in turn makes them scale well in their robot modes next to the other G1 MP figures (yes, despite them turning into massive vehicles, these dudes-much like the other G1 combiner components-were only like a couple of heads taller than the standard Autobots like Jazz and Prowl in the cartoon), and capture a little more of the cartoons' aesthetic from the front and the back, whereas Moon Studio set their main focus on the front of the figures and went for a cleaner aesthetic that removes all of the G1 toy/cartoon-accurate panels and train chunks that would usually hang off of their bodies.

If you thought the flying train seemed rediculous well that actually happened very frequently in the Headmasters anime. The train crew were transport.

I really like the "flying body parts" possibilities. Reminds me of the cartoons or Sentai shows with all the parts flying in to combine.

I wouldn’t be suprised if in like ten years when they decided to do a main line version of the train bots they just simplify these molds.

The train mode is beautiful but that robot mode is horrifying with those mostly empty space legs that are still somehow super wide from the front...woof, guessing they know it'll probably be displayed in combine mode...

Got mine a couple days ago, and have been loving it. Took me a bit to figure out how to do the chest mode because I kept accidently skipping steps, but now that I know how it works it goes together perfectly. Just keep transforming it for fun. Can't wait until the rest release.

I'm actually surprised at how clean the vehicle mode looks. The last Trainbot I ever had was the Takara release of Rail Racer/JRX which was notorious back in the day so I might actually have to pick up these.

Great video as always! All the transparent plastic panels have me paranoid for longevity of the figure, but the thing I'm really not fond of is the bottom of the foot being a painted panel. Looks like a fun figure otherwise~!

The quality & scale reminds me of the 2013 Toyota FJ X Optimus Prime, and the old Alternity line-up, which evolved into the Masterpiece line.

Once I learned these were HO scale I had the idea to get the original 1985 Tyco Transformers HO set. This Shouki rolls and fits perfectly fine on real HO track. He is too long to take HO curves but looks great on display. I have the original 1982 Trainbots also and they are basically N scale. My idea now is to build a N scale oval inside of the 36"×45" HO oval for the Tyco set. Then I can have a combined original 1982 and 2022 Trainbot layout in front of my Transformers collection. I originally was going to display both Raiden in combined mode. Now I'm not sure lol. Way too expensive to buy 2 sets of the 1982 and 2022. Look up images of the original Train Robo and Construction Vehicle Robo. They also come with a scaled display and layout similar to the Tyco 1985 set. Raiden and Devastator were rivals in Diaclone. I love the idea of the MPG being designed also for model railroad enthusiasts. Very big in Japan and with the original designers of Diaclone. My Dad tried to get me interested in trains when I was a kid late 70s. Star Wars, Transformers and video games ended that lol. But having the Tyco set and now MPG I can actually talk to him about how to create a combined layout. He is 77. Thanks for the great review!

It's a CHUG. But since it's official, fans will still argue that it's an MP. The only thing not CHUG-gish about this is license and price. I'm more curious if they'll be as forgiving if they've released Devastator in this scale and quality instead of Raiden.

The train mode looks awesome!! However, the robot mode doesn't scream masterpiece at all. If they made it an operating HO scale locomotive then perhaps the price point would be justified. We'll see how this set turns out when the rest of the team shows up.

The only reasoning I’ll give this figure for it’s small size is that it scales with HO scale model trains supposedly. So if you put them on an HO scale train layout, it should properly scale with everything else on the layout

This feels like it was bumped to masterpiece due to the licencing, otherwise it look more like it would fit in with the legacy line.

MPG Trainbots are gonna be like the Takara RID versions of Team Bullet Train: lots and LOTS of clear plastic. Good thing Hasbro had to cut down the budget and change the clear to opaque plastic instead (plus the Takara version had some issues with the paint that Hasbro fixed).

if this is anything to go by, i guess i can stop holding out for a first-party Predaking and just save up for one of the 3rd party ones.

It's gonna be interesting to see where this compares to Moon Studio. From what I have seen, I think on a per figure basis, Moon Studio is better... but as a combiner, the combined mode will probably be better with the Masterpiece.

if it's sold very well and Raiden if successful then will be more masterpiece official combiners for both takara tomy and hasbro for example Aerialbots and Constructicons it need to be successful then again anything is possible

In case you're wondering if he's a bit small for an MP,the full combined Raiden will only as tall as the CW combiners.about 30cm

These trainbots should’ve used all solid plastic with painted windows. These are way too expensive for Hasbro to be using the translucent plastic that becomes super fragile almost out of the box.

I went all in on Moon Studio's Radiatron. I figured if I needed to, I could cancel the pre-orders if Takara's version looked better. When the images of MPG Shouki next to MP Ultra Magnus came out, I knew I couldn't do it. I wanted figures that could reasonably be considered "in-scale" with the WfC and Legacy toys. It's one of the reasons why I also have FT-44 Thomas, too.

I sure hope they Make and MP devastator.

I guess they had to adhere to the train model to a tee because of the license because the robot mode is heavily, HEAVILY comrpomised because of it. the Moon Studio version doesn't just eat this guy's lunch but all his daily meals too.

Honestly, my main make-or-break is how much transparent plastic there is. Im worried about how it might hold up over time.

Great video as always. So many issues with this. How is this a masterpiece again he's kinda short? That backpack is a no no. So much all around kibble. Why clear plastic? They could have used molded colored plastic then paint it. I forgot about the price for each of these. Oh boy, that price for a MP that's the size of a CHUG? Sorry but Moon Studios got it right, even though the alt modes are a bit stumpy.

This looks more like a main line (like Legacy) figure than a masterpiece figure. Makes me worry about the look of future combiners

If these were not called mps and they double down on the HO scale idea, ie this is a transforming model train and not a mp offering this would be more acceptable. This is going to disappoint people expecting a regular mp transformer.

Why does this official one feels like a cheap copy of the 3rd party version? It should have been the other way around.

The engineering seems more in-line with a mainline Transformer than a Masterpiece. Things just kind of hanging off. Size wise as well. Not sure why they made him so short. Weird.

Of coarse it can fly it's a "bullet" train.

As with many others, I'm team Moon Studio on this one. I just personally like everything about it way more ... though, I do wish moon studio's offering would allow for characters to ride in the trains! But yeah, for me, it is a no-brainer between the two.

I still cannot believe that for $50 LESS you can get a bigger, sturdier, cleaner, and over all better looking figure. But hey, this one comes with an autobot logo lol.

He seems rather small when put next to MP Prime let alone Moon Studios version. I generally prefer official MP over 3P but this kinda feels second tier to moon studio honestly.

The scale and detail really isn’t Masterpiece, this should of been simplified and been part of legacy as a Leaderclass or CommanderClass and had more combiner accessories like MotorMaster. It’s the same size as ER Optimus and smaller than MP sideswipe, I’d be surprised if he was actually this small in the show or he’s a bigger mass shifter than Astrotrain

Oof this is... not a great start. I cant believe they're calling this a masterpiece figure. Its such a gappy, pannely, messy figure. The off-white colour they used just makes it look yellowed, its a bad colour. And I know Moon Studios did this on a few of them too but I seriously object to painted panels ending up on the bottom of feet, that's just begging for them to get scratched up. Things I like about this more than Moon Studio's: I like the proportions of the train mode more, and I like that its a more reasonable size, the Moon Studio one is too big for my taste. But the fact that this one is significantly more expensive, its overall just so, so much worse

So where can I find this guy and his teammates?

Omg the comparison to mp-44 optimus prime , ppl was right this is legend scale 🤦🏾‍♂ when i heard he was compared to earth rise optimus prime & to see with my own eyes wow! Only thing look great is the train mode. 🤷🏾‍♂🤷🏾‍♂🤷🏾‍♂

when all said and done and the combiner is finally finished and people display it in combine mode it’ll last maybe a year before all the clear plastic cracks under the stress.

If they just wouldn't have bothered with this needing to appeal to model train enthusiasts, this could've turned out a LOT better.

Takara isn't aiming for the same thing as Moon Studio. It's not fair to compare them. It's a model train that transforms. It's for the Japanese fan base, 100%. But these really should be commander class mainline figs, or more palatably leader class. They don't belong in the MP line, regardless of scale. It looks CHUG.

Train mode is beautiful for Takara and kills Moon Studio! Robot Mode Takara is actually more cartoon accurate over Moon with better paint and better face mold. Combiner mode looks more Masterpiece than cheap Moon Studio but…..scale is main worry of Takara Raiden! Moon combiner Raiden is ridiculous in terms of scale as it’s almost as big as Metroplex which is a big turn off to me! Want Takara Raiden to be 2-3 inches shorter than Titan Devastator and Predaking and I’ll be a happy camper! Better not be combiner war Superion size which is far too small!

Better train mode the Moon Studio's but everything else its just crap. The robot mode its horrible, especially the weird open space leg and that crappy backup barely hanging there. The combine mode is laughable, are we really back to separated combine mode heads? Why they didn't engenired a combined mode head in the front of the train/backpack instead of the useless passengers seats? Moon studios:s has its own issues but this is Hasbro level of crappyness PS the soles of the feet are painted clear plastic panels, niiiice! I'm sure it won't be a problem at all, sure
