MQTT stands for Message Queuing Telemetry Transport and it's a great way to be able to see Meshtastic traffic if you can't link to any other nodes via the 868MHz LoRa radio mesh. Be careful how you use it however, as you can flood the radio network with traffic which could cause it to become saturated. Recommendation is to turn off MQTT to prevent this.
The Facebook group I mentioned is Meshtastic Brighton / 3696312513946679
A much larger Facebook group is Meshtastic UK

Uplink/downlink setting is in the channels tab on phone app. You can enable or disable for each channel you have setup. Please people don't use mqtt on public channels.

Yes as you said it is available on android app in the [Channels] then click on [0 Long Fast] then you will see Uplink Downlink

For iPhone hold the primary channel until a pop up appears and you will have up and down links there.

Great video and clearly explained suppose good for people with no RF activity in the area .Can you do a video on remote access to a node via port forwarding please .most secure way possible Simon .thanks for the videos ❤️

No need to go via PC. Go to Channels and enable Up/downlink in the channel of choice (Long Fast)

Please to those watching. if you have local RF contacts don't switch this on as it will flood and stop people doing real rf only meshtastic networking.

I only enable mqtt when connected to a dummy load. It is also possible to disable TX in the radio settings.

How to choose who's messages are relayed from internet? I only want to see MQTT messages from my friends.
@fotografm

I am not aware that you can put a filter on who you see in a channel (eg. LongFast or UKwide), but what you could do (I have not yet tried this) is to set up a new channel only for your friends. You would have to shared the preshared encryption key with them but this would be easy using the QR code generated by your app for your new channel.

My understanding is that this frequency range isnt restricted to licensed amateurs, so im assuming enceyption is ok. If you use the 433mhz version you can only use that by virtue of your license and you then need to enable amateur mode disavle encryption? My understanding was being licensed gives you additional privileges over joe public but these come with rules...but it doesnt take away what you could do beforehand. So if it's legal for an unlicensed individual it is also legal for you?

The 433MHz frequencies used by LORA are in the license exempt set of frequencies, so no need to follow amateur radio conditions there either (eg encryption)

This function on the app is on Channels module, if click on '0 Longfast', a new window appears with up/down link enable. God bless.

and how do you get that page you show on the laptop ?

Plug the node into a USB port on a windows machine then use a Chrome based browser (ie. Chrome or Edge but not Firefox) and go to client.meshtastic.org. After choosing Serial and New Device interface and the correct com port you are presented with the pages I showed on my laptop. A future video will show how to connect a console erminal to the device using Python.

I can't get mine to connect to my home network via my WiFi router. I thought I would have been able to do this and then connect in to my network via WiFi from the Meshtastic App. Bluetooth isn't good enough here.

I am using a Heltec V3, although it states it will connect on WiFi, it just doesn't. Then I have to refresh to get back in again via Bluetooth.

On my iPhone, I found the controls for uplink/downlink on the phone menu at radio configuration > channel. I also found it necessary to set the Root Topic to msh/EU_898 which wasn't the default for me. I have seen your nodename on MQTT and wondered if it were you... I'll try and send you a message.

yes ive got it on my app as well . Tap on the Radio configuration/Channels ,tap on the first channel, mines 0 Longfast and the uplink and downlink is revealed

Thanks for the info. It could well have been me so please sa hi when you get the opportunity. I currently have MQTT switched off in order to avoid polluting the airwaves with long node lists.
@fotografm

Thank you for that. I hadn't thought of clicking the channel name to get to the additional settings. I suppose it allows finer granularity in controlling settings for channels independent of each other.

Actually if you are in the UK you want to set the root topic to msh/UKWide. Otherwise you will receive all the traffic for the whole of Europe, flooding the Mesh as it started to do a month or so back when it was worldwide. I can see this becoming more granular in the future as it becomes more popular, maybe Counties, Cities, Town's etc.
@Mike-H_UK
@Mike-H_UK 3 месяца назад
@@markberry5320 Do you know who owns and updates UKWide? I did hear that this was unofficially created and outside the MQTT support structure; however, his could easily have been incorrect information. It does sound like a good idea because msh/EU_868 picks up a lot of traffic from mainland Europe that I don't want. Also, if UKWide supports 433MHz, his could be very useful.

Great video, thanks for clarifying a few points. I’m looking to setup MQTT for a local MQTT server so I can monitor Meshtastic over the local network and use within Home Assistant. I’m following the official docs but does anyone have any experience of implementing this?

Yup - is there somewhere we can have a more longform discussion? I have this setup and also use MQTT to make my node broadcast weather data from my local weather station.

@@fotografm Don't know if that will help much, there have been changes in the 2.2.22+ firmware because I requested to be able to send to any channel, and I pointed out that the logic that checked for a channel called mqtt only worked when the root MQTT topic was msh/ when it changed to msh/REGION (eg msh/EU_868) then it broke because the loop that split the topic apart landed on a channel called json, instead of a channel called mqtt - and then rejected the message.
@fotografm
@fotografm 3 месяца назад
@@AndrewJonesMcGuire that is interesting. It is still beta software of course, so let's hope that these point will be ironed out in time.
@AndrewJonesMcGuire

@@fotografm I expect plenty of issues popping up and then being resolved as the path to v3 continues. The routing change in v3 will be huge and because it's considered to be a breaking change, will probably significantly impact the mesh where it relies on remote unattended nodes for bridging contacts - until they are updated to use the new routing algorithm.
@jacko101
@jacko101 3 месяца назад
Good that you did testing with the dummy load, because enabling MQTT is bad as you'll flood the mesh with broadcasts slowing it down for everyone.
@fotografm

Indeed ! It is also possible to disable TX in the node settings but I wanted to be sure.

hi Jacko i'm completely new to this ,so am i correct in thinking that it will also transmit as well as using the internet at the same time if TX is enabled,so if i turn off TX it will only go via the internet ? I am currently not using MQQT and i dont think that i will. I've currently not picked up a single thing here in Norfolk ATM
