Great tune, makes me think of Midnight Cowboy, but also the ska and reggae around at the time. Instrumentals have to be really good melodically to be a hit, they don’t have words to provide a ‘hook’ for the listener, I don’t think you get too many instrumentals charting these days!!

@@JohnSmith-su3ze Yeah, very same here LOL. You had the song in your mind for years, but never knew who the band was when you had it only on audio tape those days (IF at all) with no song titles on it :D - Since its only an instrumental it was much much harder to search, so I Google Harmonica and Piano, hahahah and found it - I found the track on a very old reel to reel and was like,,,woooow thats actually the song I heard when I was 10 :D

There is some mild debate around that - some say it's Ian Duck playing harmonica as he was part of Elton John's band at the time, who morphed into Hookfoot, which included drummer Roger Pope and guitarist Caleb Quaye, both of whom are also on this.
@GrilloTheFlightless
@GrilloTheFlightless 3 месяца назад
@@bobgreen623 Ian Duck made a Top Of The Pops appearance playing it, but the recording as released was Harry Pitch. The problem was that Mr Bloe wasn’t really a band but was a group of session guys put together by Zack Lawrence, so TV appearances tended to use whoever was available. In the case of this video, just Zack Lawrence and a bunch of dancers! As well as Duck, the TOTP appearance used the band that would become Hookfoot. Zack Lawrence had been working with them, and Elton John (in fact, before recording the single he tried doing a piano version, minus harmonica, using Elton but it didn’t work out). I guess that’s why he used them on TOTP. Harry Pitch was mainly a chromatic harmonica player and not so accustomed to diatonic harmonicas. The story goes that he had to learn to play a different style for the recording. He was a very highly respected session musician, as well as being a band leader in his own right. His work can be heard on many movie soundtracks, including Bridge Over The River Kwai, and played on a number of British pop hits of the age. Legend has it that he gave John Lennon some advice on harmonica technique prior to the recording of Love Me Do. But to many Brits, the most well known tune he played on was the theme tune to sitcom Last Of The Summer Wine.
