In this video Canadian Guitarist/producer Dean Wolfe reacts to Ars Moriendi by Mr. Bungle.
A LITTLE ABOUT ME: I'm Dean Wolfe, a mostly self-taught Canadian guitarist/composer/multi-instrumentalist/singer/producer/performer. I started out as a full time musician on the road at age 17 for two years, but went part-time ever since while holding day careers including as a chef and in spiritual health care while raising a family.
I've recorded hundreds of my own songs- many being used in media and award winning documentaries etc. I've been in several bands including a prog/jazz fusion act nFuze, performing in International Jazz festivals and jazz clubs. I abandoned the prog genre more or less back in the 1990s but have returned to it now with vigour a full 30 years later- so much prog I've ignored and quite frankly didn't have any idea about. My own prog band was rejected by record labels as "too progressive' in the late 80s, so i detoured into grunge, pop and alternative instead (then folk and acoustic fingerstyle guitar and ambient electric as well).

In my opinion, the best way to appreciate this amazing album is to listen to the whole album in order. The songs are more like sections in a larger piece. Love this album, love love it.

Me: - How much music can you squeeze into a song? Mr Bungle: - Hold my beer. This song is a true gem. It served as sort of an anthem for me and my fellow bandmates some 20 years ago. We were on our way from Bergen to Førde, to play a gig, driving in my friends yellow Hyundai (named Påskebilen - the easter car). We stopped for a pause surrounded by the mighty westcoast nature of Norway, and we blasted Ars Moriendi while dancing hyperactive the on the parking space. There were a lot of people looking sort of confused probably wondering what kind of institution we had escaped from🥳🤘

Mr. Bungle got their name from an old film clip about how to behave in the school lunchroom. "You wouldn't want to be like Mr. Bungle." That film clip was used in the early 80's during The Pee Wee Herman Show. Their earliest influences were Anthrax, Slayer, and other metal acts, but as the band started being locally known, they quickly adapted that ska and funk sound to their music. Faith No More fired their singer Chuck Mosley and had MASSIVE success stealing Mike Patton from Mr. Bungle as vocalist of FNM. With the success of FNM, Patton got Bungle signed to Warner Bros and they cut their masterpiece self titled album. If Danny Elfman, Pennywise the Clown, and David Lynch produced an album, it would be this one... It's funny, but the musicianship is off the charts, and the grooves are massive.... then they put out their 2nd album Disco Volante and completely weirded everyone out. They polarized their fanbase with an avant garde experimental jazz/noise/acid trip. Their 3rd album was closer to the 2nd, but again, totally different vibes. "California" is pretty crazy like Ars Moriendi on a few tunes, but then surprisingly mellow on others. It has a huge Beach Boys vibe. Years and years would go by and when we least expected, Mr. Bungle reunited before the pandemic and put out a throwback 80's Thrash album. It's a pro version of their earliest demo The Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny, and they recruited Dave Lombardo from Slayer on drums, and Scott Ian of Anthrax on guitar. Bringing it all full circle. That's all you need to know.. hahaha I've been a fan for over 30 years now, and their concerts are among the best I've witnessed.

The original edition of this album of Sleepytime Gorilla Museum (in CD version) was on "Web Of Mimicry" label, wich is the label of Trey Spurance, (Mr Bungle guitarist) and also the label of his own proteiform collective band "Secret Chiefs 3" who out his first record on a bonus 7" of the second album of Mr Bungle... This band have some connections to Rio movement as Sleepytime Gorilla Museum.

Aah, Mike Patton, leadsinger of mr. Bungle, Fantomas and of course Faith No More. Also known as mr. 1000 voices. The Ska element is nice. In the early eighties there were a lot of Skabands which ruled the charts. Madness, The Specials The Selecter to name a few. Mike Patton is a very big name in alternative rock (and a tiny bit metal). Try something of Faith No More. It's really something.

Bizarre sense of humor + ridiculous musical talent + Not giving a sh#t about ‘popular’ opinion = Mike Patton. And that’s why we love him and all the many bands he’s been in (although Faith No More and Mr Bungle are frankly his best)

Everyone in this band is in like 12 other bands. I think Mike Patton (vocals) and Trey Spruance (guitar) may be having a contest. But you should check out Spruance’s band Secret Chiefs 3. That band literally has its own bands. It’s complicated but worth it.

Thank you Dean! I didn’t know what song by them to start with, so I just went with one of my favorites. Also, other channels start with their first album (which I would call kind of evil circus ska, though there’s much more than that that’s kind of the theme) which is a great album but also my least favorite. I almost went with a song called Carrying Stress in the Jaw. Speaking of Sleepytime Gorilla Museum: 1. Carla Kihlstedt, their violinist, played on this album. 2. One of the record labels Sleepytime was on, Web of Mimicry, is run by Trey Spruance, the guitarist of Mr. Bungle. Thanks again Dean!

Ars Moriendi is an absolute must. Talking to a prog fan ? Perfect pick, IMO. Carry Stress In The Jaw is chaos. A lot more experimental than Ars Moriendi : only for the advised people requesting weirdness and to be surprised. Jonathon Thames did react to Pink Cigarette and was so underwhelmed by the conventionnal writing, that somebody requested him to do Carry Stress In The Jaw. That worked. That was the good time to come to it. I usually suggest Ars Moriendi or Carousel for a first dig into Mr Bungle to prog fans.

I saw SC3 open for SGM at the El Rey. They played George Crumb during the intermission, Shinichi Momo Koga came to the show by chance and danced for half the set, then for the closer they brought everyone out (including Estradasphere who was there for some reason) and played Funkadelic's Everybody's Going to Make It This Time. Probably the best show I ever went to.

@@ba_charles I LOVED the shows I saw those bands play together. I have a cool SGM/SC3 poster from one of those tours. It was always awesome when shinichi was with them, but one particular show at The Great American Music Hall in SF (same show the live version of Powerless on the Grand Opening and Closing reissue is from) it seemed like the entirety of InkBoat was there. Shinichi walked across the crowd’s shoulders. It was one of the wildest of the 20 or so times I saw SGM. Gosh I miss them.

The suggested way to appreciate Mr Bungle's 3 Warner Bros albums is to listen in order to hear how their sound progressed, and also to think about when the albums were made. When I say "progressed," I mean "changed" more than "matured" or "got-better" ... They had extreme talent from the start on WB, but they changed their overall sound for each album. To me, if they ever released a "radio-friendly" album, California would have been it. Songs like Retrovertigo, Pink Cigarette, or even songs like Goodbye Sober Day or Vanity Fair could have been played on the radio, if there was a station that had the balls to play them. Disco Volante and their self-titled debut album (often referred to as the Clown album for some reason) had exactly zero radio friendly songs on them. They tried with "Travolta/Quote Unquote" ... but it proved to be too much even for the disc-jockeys that considered themselves edgy... I think the difference was that the first two albums directly went against traditional song structure and being pigeon-holed into genres. The third album "California" relaxed a little bit on that fight. I'm in no-way disparaging their first two albums. The transitions they are able to pull off in even their most chaotic songs are incredible. They also somehow make multiple genres and music stylings work amazingly in tandem or even parallel.

Ska was more of a so-cal thing that came out of the LA/OC punk scene whereas funk metal was a SF deal coming out of its thrash metal scene and general bay area weirdness. I think every guitarist out here was in a ska band at some point in the 90s, myself included.
