Stickers on Patton's keyboards and console: -"American Made" -"I ♥ skater guys" -"Sodomizer" -"For a small town this one sure has a lot of ASSHOLES". God bless him.
@@terriblecrayon That's a formant scream. That pitch is not possible to be sang normally. It's a harmonic of a lower note. Somehow, Patton has figured a way to make the harmonic louder than the fundamental. There's one particular Jon Zorn song where Patton does this scream by himself and you can hear a lower note below the scream.
@@BrunodeSouzaLino David Lee Roth used to do it all the time. I've noticed the people that can do it best either have naturally raspy voices (Axl Rose, Mariah Carey, Lalah Hathaway, DLR, Bon Jovi, to name a few that can do it), have REALLY good control of their distortion (Mike Patton, Devin Townsend), or a little bit of both (Layne Staley, Corey Taylor). I've practiced it a lot in my own singing and I've noticed that once you get to around an A5 (more like a G# or so a lot of the time) when using that technique, the A6 begins to overpower the fundamental note. Probably something to do with the fact that pitches double in decibel per octave.
@@m0nstaman This is quite different than a scream in that sense. While the scream in this performance lands in the region of a C#7, it's an effect in the context of the song and not meant as a pitched tone. This is different than similar screams Devin Townsend used to do in that vocal range. He's not singing that high pitch. That pitch is a harmonic of a lower pitch and that's what's being sung. Jon Zorn's Moonchild showcases this well. You can clearly hear two pitches when he screams.
Mike Patton is the least appreciated and most talented vocalist of all time. There is no close second. Faith, Bungle, Tomahawk, Fantomas, Peeping Tom, whatever... he's unique and magnificent in whatever form he chooses to be. Long live the King!
Erm... am I the exception to this rule? I like the work of Spruance and Dunn in particular. Although all the members of Bungle add to the sound, the combination of Patton Spruance and Dunn really has something. Patton has still not equalled Bungle to this day - His other bands just weren't as cohesive. Additionally - No Spruance = No Bungle. Trey was the motivating force behind the band.
damn. i've been listening to bungle for ages...but seeing this song performed live is insane. That bass/drums/vocal unison in the middle has got to be one of the strangest and most difficult passages in rock music. I didn't even know it was possible to pull that off live, I thought for sure some studio magic was involved on Disco Volante. Guess not!! Someone PLEASE make this band get back together. I would much prefer that over the current FNM reunion (who i also love).
This might be my favourite version of this song ever recorded. The sound-effects and samples Mike throws into the free-jazz breakdown make the song that much more disorienting.
Saw Bungle live in Manchester ... it was techincally amazing, the amount of instruments they went through without a glitch or bug.. and to top it off the support band never turned up so they did an extra set ... easily one of the best gigs I ever saw
maybe it's a weird comparison but the beginning sounds a bit like it could be an Amnesiac era Radiohead song, especially Mike's vocals. either way, this might be even better than the album version.
Most beautiful version of the song. Melancholic bossa-nova with outstanding metal passages. What more can be said? One of my favourite live-videos ever.
what the goddam fucking shit - I'm amazed! I can't believe they pull this off live, and so perfectly and with so much soul too! My day is officially made :D
Powder grinding mouthfull Pull the day from the nocturn Sonimloquist is the nightmare's song "In the multiplied objects of the external world I had no thoughts but for the teeth... And of Berenice, I more seriously believed that All her teeth were thoughts.. The white and ghastly spectrum of the teeth... Meditations were never pleasurable... The phantasma of the teeth maintained Its terrible ascendency" (Poe) Lock into bitten dreams perfectionist Break like a child's mouth
@@LeonardoSanchez-se6fz But not in this form because we can't become 30 year olds after being 50 year olds. Saw them yesterday 2/13/2020 and it was a fun show, but we can't get back those days. I feel lucky to have seen them during their first tour. Mind was blown. Like has been said, there are videos thankfully.
2:23 - 3:07 This has got to be my favourite bit on that entire album. And live! LIVE! Oh lordie! For those who don't know, the lyrics for this section are from a poem by Edgar Allen Poe; "In the multiplied objects of the external world I had no thoughts but for the teeth... And of Bernice, I more seriously believed that All her teeth were thoughts.. The white and ghastly spectrum of the teeth... Meditations were never pleasurable... The phantasma of the teeth maintained Its terrible ascendency"
@yovioleatuzorramadre See, I've always thought the band in general was WAY underrated (Heifetz always seemed in particular to be in the background and the guy's an incredibly skilled drummer)
Not really a great song to find and listen for the first time ever, not knowing the band at all while completely butt-naked high as one can be. Fuck me. I love it and I hate it
Their 3 Albums are SO GREAT! no one is better than the other.. they are only different! -Mr bungle is an EXELENT live circus presentation. -Disco Volante is the WEIRD in person. (taking weird as a good word) -California .. one word : CLASSIC! this is music man , thanks Mr bungle!
I listened to Disco Volante today, having never listened to Mr. Bungle. Everyone says it's hard to get into, but it's exactly what I wanted to hear. I've been listening to it nonstop.
That's not Trevor, that's trey spruance doing the vocals on the Secret song,... They decided(Mr bungle they were gonna record that song without Trey and not tell him, ..he went to the studio found out and added the vocals, not telling Patton or ANY of the other band members until they heard it for themselves when the album was out Lmfao
***** He isn't. From wikipedia: The untitled track after "Sleep (Part II): Carry Stress in the Jaw" is often titled "The Secret Song" (the working title of the song) or "Spy" (the title that appears on various concert setlists). It was originally recorded without bassist Trevor Dunn's input or knowledge; although, shortly before its release, Dunn managed to find it and added a vocal track. Though never explicitly stated, it is believed (by Dunn) that the drums were played by McKinnon, and the bass guitar by Patton.
@dustwardprez Same TheAxlSnaks said. I mean studio albums. Obviously, demos like OU818 are of my favourites, songs like the funkier Squeeze me macarroni o the fucking great Mr nice guy... It is delirant, in a funky way.
Thats not the point of what im saying. Yea, playing live and being more free about it and being more expressive physically and improvisationally is all good, but they re did the song. You can tell they literally went through and re wrote the song because they wanted it to sound more like california. And thats no fun. You want variation in songs. This just... isnt as good as the original.
You oversimplify bungles very complex arrangements. Yea, at a very basic level, it didnt change much. But its missing all the original elements that made it really impressivly experimental and complete. This just sounds all hacked up and simplified.
Ok so am i the only one who hates what they did to this masterpiece? They took out all the fantastic and experimental elements... the insanely fast drum line during the verse, the noise breakdown, the free jazz breaks.. i dont like this change at all.
@famouseyes yes and Im sure their sale reflect your non musical input, name a singer, or a bass player like this band? and please dont add your Fav bands in, I mean MUSICALLY! PATTON AND DUNN are WORLD renown
Huh? Are you replying to me, or was that meant twoards someone else...? Anyways, theres the sax 1:30 "dumbshit". Learn bungle history, they first had TWO sax players, one left, but there is still a sax right there next to trey.
Many people feel exactly the same way, same thing with Zorn for a lot of people. And I concur with Dazeuhl, it is WONDERFUL. First time I heard bungle I was like "wtf is this shit?" now I use bungle like coffee.
Mr. Bungle with all of the members except Patton replaced would be Fantomas. Fantomas is awesome, but gawd damnit I would prefer Bungie any day. Nothing can ever replace Mr. Bungle.
