MR.BUNGLE - RETROVERTIGO (REACTION!!!) 

One of my favorite songs ever. This whole album is an absolute trip

Mr. Bungle can go from unbearably abrasive to hauntingly beautiful in a second. They definitely aren't for everyone as a whole but they offer something for everyone.

California is one of the best albums ever.

Recently fell down into the rabbit hole of reaction videos and just wanted to say you're probably the best I've seen (and I've watched more than I'd like to admit). I like that you have a good understanding of music, and your reactions feel authentic. And you cover a good variety of music beyond the popular ones that everyone and their mother has done. Watch out bruh... the California album is the worm on the hook. Once you have fully digested it the musical 3rd eye opens and LO! Disco Volante becomes your secret pleasure.

Man, I'll never get why people request My Ass Is On Fire as an introduction to Mr Bungle. Even less the ones that will insult you for not liking it at your first listen to it. Even myself (I'm a big Mr Bungle fan since over 25 years) and not sure of which people could like this else myself (yup ! I've got a lot of metalhead friends hahaha). Didn't even really liked it at my first listening if I remember correctly. Retrovertigo is the perfect gateway to Mr Bungle in my opinion : you get some not conventionnal sounds and writing, but great voice and melody. If you're still open to do some 'weird' of Mr Bungle : Ars Moriendi and Carousel would be my picks. Maybe weirder, but accessible I think. Anyway ! Was fun watching you react to this.

This band is lucky to get a major release. Nowadays, this kind of music will be totally indie as no major label will take a risk. Mike’s got clout.

Early Bungle is just fucking savage. I loved it at the time because I was young and angry, but it’s definitely not everybody. This album though is just downright pretty, somehow. Get better soon, Roxanne!

Great analysis Jay!( tons of details in these tracks) One of my favorite Bungle songs. These are my classmates from High School. They use the music to annoy or convey things that they want . So you gotta be true to how you respond. Its not made for everyone to like!

My teammate was best friend's with the star of the Retrovertigo video. Sadly, that same star was killed by a sideview car mirror. Small world. BIG sound.

I'm a bass player so I follow the bass and drums a ton. Music that I find fun and interesting doesn't always translate to fun for a casual listen. Some Mr. Bungle songs that I love, I would not suggest as an introduction to the band. Very few of these songs are catchy to a first time listener and its pretty much the point of this band. Glad you Like some songs. Don't blame you for hating others. Kudos for giving it a chance.

Wow, so glad you did something off the California album. At one point, I called "None of them Knew they were Robots" my favorite song (of all songs by anybody), so I'd suggest that one. That said, it took me about 3 listens before my brain could start to comprehend their music. It blows your mind and opens it to new musical ideas. That's great, of course, but it also makes it hard to do a first time reaction... Same with the song 'Aja' by Steely Dan. I couldn't take it all in on the first listen. I had to come to realize the genius.

Possibly my favorite Bungle song but the entire album is Fire! Vanity Fair next!!!

Only 2.27 in and I know what you mean. Mr Bungle isn't for everybody (hell I'd even say nobody) but that's the joy of music. I am a big Mr Bungle fan, but I wouldn't wish this music on anyone who isn't prepared. Like what you like and say no to others. That is your right. And it's alright. Edit: For when i see your reaction to it... Yeah... That's just the way it goes with Patton shit. Some good, some bad, all entertaining, but yeah... don't go further into that territory, if you can avoid it... ..unless you want to .I did, and wow, and whoa... or maybe ooh. I've always thought this song, with a few anti-bungle tweaks, could have had airplay.

from here i would go to "Ars Moriendi" then try something back form the OG album, less insane like "Carousel". the albums are thematic to a point, California is pop ala Bungle, the first Album is metal/ska/heavily sampled. the second album requires a very open ear being an avant metal/Jazz but there is no easy intro that one, but id suggest "Desert Search For Techno Allah" &/or "Carry Stress in the Jaw". the latest album is their thrash metal/punk roots revisited being pure thrash done very well if its ur thing. everything in between with bungle is just delight once you learn to appreciate the deliberately orchestrated often obnoxious insanity, subversion and elaborate genius. so, "Ars Moriendi" "Carousel" "Desert Search For Techno Allah" "Carry Stress in the Jaw". "Sudden Death" if you follow this path you should have a much better informed idea on what Bungle is.

why no lyric analysis for patton projects? just curious. this whole album (California) was i think less abstract lyrically than their previous stuff, the lyrics are defintely worth a look. this song seems to be criticizing pop culture that keeps regurgitating past trends while really having a parastic effect on society.

bungle is a extreme experimental rock metal band my ass is on fire is a good example of their extreme side lol the same for most of fantomas albums are extreme. just because bungle is a extreme band doesn't mean they cant have a softer more simple side which is why i love them they have so many styles :)

You either like Mr Bungle or you hate it. You should watch the video that goes along with this song. It is haunting!

It's funny how one of the first of theirs was the My Ass Is On Fire. It's on their first one, in 91, and it was raw anger combo of time since 1985. It has good ones too, maybe Carousel. The next two, 95' and 99' are all mixes of many things. Some are 10 minutes long. Probably the best 2. They just got back together(21 years later), but with Slayer and Anthrax for new album... /recover and remain healthy ↑→→↑

The best thing about Mr. Bungle is that you just skip ahead if you don't like a song. The next one will be different. Something for everybody, but experimental music is not going to please everybody all the time. Don't listen to those gatekeepers.

Also for something a little different--i would recommend a lot of different things these days to your channel. but trying to keep with the vibe of your channel--anyway Try Fugazi Waiting Room--one of the classic hardcore songs of underground hardcore--but super catchy. And one of Flea's favorite bass players.

When I put to play this video, the `likes`and `dislikes` were at these numbers: 27 to 1...:) That`s the exact date numbers of Mike`s birthday, January the 27h!! :) What a coincidence, you`ll say.:)) Well..I got used to it.:) Sending you all the positive energy you can get, Rox! Hold on to it, honey! :D And Jay, man, thanks a lot for finally reacting on this...:) We won`t be bitchin` again, that`s a promise.:) And that`s the spirit, from now on it all will be much better regarding Mr.Bungle, that`s the word! :) Someone said (and you` ve noticed too) something like "clown rock"... I speak in my own name, not to be mistaken.:) So, imagine I`m your clown and those metaphorical `candies` I offer would in fact be: sharing a good music and a delightful information about it that makes sense. :)))) That`s how, this (musical) roller-coaster will be even greater fun, is that cool?:) Ok, well, here`s a treat for this song:....:) The whole `California` album, like I`ve mentioned earlier, is dedicated to the mellow, soft music of 20th century, to an easy listening, from the surf rock, doo-wop, swing, the space-ambient, world music, Herbie Hancock-ish break-dance electronic jazz and 80`s dance music...:) Pure musical gold, as someone would say....and even to unbridled and fervent - gypsy music, yeah!:) ...along with some metal, but...who cares, right, hahah?.... You saw the cover of the album: a love pair on the tropical beach, under the palm tree......It all looks perfect, right? With one exception: it`s all a fraud - One Giant Mask - since everything in Mr.Bungle is rolling under the masks! So, what do they unmask now< you ask. That`s a complex question... Although these guys always radiate the aura of underground frivolity and a comical clown-silliness, you wouldn`t believe what kind of intelligence is hiding behind that mask, that first layer of meaning...;) They are not only a good musicians, they do a great mind work as well: Trey, the guitarist, is into the philosophical, occult and metaphysical books, Mike is a filmophile and a great reader also ( he studied English literature for one year...), the bassist is quite of a jazz-bro, a musical virtuoso, but also a free-minded, enterprising fellow... So, when these three meet - the true magic comes out.:)) What united them on `California` is the mutual feeling of a world lost in the abyss between the golden past and the faint and insecure / unconvincing future by any known and regular standards immanent to a human belief. :( I guess that space is what they call (a song titled): "The Air-Conditioned Nightmare"... and this is the album`s light-motive. So, all this mellow music suddenly gets the taste of sadness and the grief over the human condition in the modernity. This comes to accent especially in the "Retrovertigo" ! Yeap, Vertigo is a dizziness. With the prefix "Retro", boys from Mr.B. wanted to point out some kind of special characteristics of these days (even since `99, when the album was recorded!) where mankind somehow reached the peak of it`s creativity, which leads to no other solution than - to recycle the PAST! This gives a headache to The Thinker, to a still Creative Mind, headed for a prolific Future! That`s the common weak spot of this (post) postmodern times. The verses: "A tribute to false memories, With conviction, Cheap imitation..... Is it fashion or disease?.... " Now, The Postmodernism, in which these guys are into, is a still present art conceptualism where the question of The Author is irrelevant as long as the art is alive :) and even if the art consists of many of the parts of the other arts and the products of other authors! :))) The omni-present, all-associal, an endlessly rich in meaning, living Net, known as Hyper-Textuality. :)What d`ya think about that?:) And Mr.B. is really the fabulous example of a postmodern band: their entire music consists of the parts of already reached musical solutions.:) Let`s take Retrovertigo for the example: the song starts like The Beatles in their late phase.:) And yes - it`s Mike Patton, using the musical solution of the well known beat-boxing, soon after!...:)))) The crescendo-part, as you stated - at the song`s end evokes the sound of the Stadium-Rock bands of the `80s, (Poison, Motley Crew, Def Leppard, Aerosmith-most of them an early idols of theirs, yet - the past ones) with all the sudden M.B. loudness and that so called `mondo`-drums, beating as a single heart of the audience.:)) The song ends with the sound of the early internet-modem router, symbolizing the irony of the early groundbreaking connectivity-solutions for the people...:))) like the blind-man leading the crowd anyhow, and even that is charmingly illustrated by that tender, yet devilish glockenspiel - which metal band uses it anyway!!? .:D But, as to the only solution for this modern gape that the mankind`s into, Mr.B. sees it in a postmodern creativity that this sad, ironic and tragicomic song manifests all the time - not only recycling but - radiating through the cracks between the parts. :)) Even the lyrics are sharing this knowledge...:) There`s a verse: "My art imitates crime...", which means: you make a crime, you make your stupid move - I`ll recognize it and I`ll copy-paste it as you copy-paste other people and their acts / opinions on the daily bases without a thought or attention, `which is a crime`....:))) But I`ll make it somehow my own, I will make the space between the copy-paste parts wider, almost The World-Dimensional and I`ll insert my own presence there in it, so you`ll still think it`s yours, but In fact the whole new world will be waiting, lying beneath that mask, and everyone will see/feel it.:))) Also, the verse: "Sell your rights to your blight and you`ll eat..." It sound sad, like some real criticism of the modern capitalism, but it`s really the big issue of nothing else than of - The Taste in Life. Which blight is it: the world`s or yours? :) It`s an enigma, but Mr.B. is here to clue it. Look, the reason why you were so shocked and repulsive toward "My Ass is on Fire" lies in the fact that you were unprepared for all the amount of a deliberate and artfully intentional - Tastelessness that Mr.B. brings in that song; they were ingeniously and comically closest of the portrait of the individual that`s fighting with all of the existential absurdity of a tasteless world as the band saw it, they just had to paint that like that - like a clown`s mask, if you`ll like.:))) So, now you know...:) And the feeling of taste comes as a crucial here in Retrovertigo. Being able to distinct what has a Taste ( not - "tasteful" - that could mean anything, but surly not A Taste by itself!) and not having It - that could be a meaning of (spiritual) life and death to an individual.:) Somehow it comes easy when you simply deal with the tastelessness of the world, you know, when you just confront to it ("Sell your rights to your blight...") - first you got `a taste` of all what`s wrong in there, fearlessly, and then you freely evade it and surely find a true Taste that will emerge right after - from another side - of your own, personal mask ( "...and you`ll eat.")...joyfully, to add.:) Oh, my...another 8 mile post of mine! :))))) I`ve got that you`re curious `bout spirituality and mysticism, so I had to bring a fair share to it, I hope you do not mind it, man....As you can see, this band goes to that category - beyond all expectations !! :) Best wishes and I hope you`ll continue to surprise both us and yourself with Patton & Bungle stuff.:) There`s a lot to witness, I just hope I didn`t went too broad..! I prefer a reactor who is honest even if I love the artist... Heck, Patton is my absolute favorite vocalist and love the majority of his work by far. And can respect the amazing skill shown by him and the people he chooses to work with in projects. But there are a couple projects I can not stand to listen to. Rather have you say you didn't dig something than fake liking it, for sure, no matter my own taste on it....

It's understandable that you don't like my ass is on fire. That song really is niche, so a small portion of people will actually enjoy it (I'm part of that niche). This song, however, is unquestionable in its greatness. It can appeal to a larger audience pretty much for all the reasons you stated in your review. Avenged sevenfold did a cover of Retrovertigo as well. Most people I know that know Mr bungle hated it. I didn't hate it like it. It was just kinda meh. I would like to see your reaction and analysis sometime since you've now heard the original.
