What is the speed of P and S Waves? I'm not a geologist and no idea yet but i want to build a earthquake sensors by reading first shaking of P waves.. I've 2 eathquake experience myself but in my country there arent much technicial details about earthquakes. i can see P waves and S waves difference on seismographs on some videos also i've read that P waves travels like 6-8 km per second and S waves travels 3-4 km per second but when i watched this video they are not fitting to same values. Can you help me to understand how P waves happens? are they up and down movement(x,y) or Z dimensional movements? also can i read them with a vibration sensor? and most important thing is what is their speeds? i'm living 35km away from a big fault zone (North marmara sea fault in istanbul-turkey) and so far i get this= after an earthquake happens on near closest big fault zone to my position, in 4,3-5,8 second i'm going to get get P waves at first and after 8,7-11,6 seconds from epicenter i'm getting hit by S waves then approximately %90 of S wave time i'll face Surface waves.. is that right? because many geophysicists saying in 10 years %65 chance for an earthquake will be happen at 7,5 magnitute.
