As an adult who grew up on Mr.Rogers and Mr.Dressup, I can really appreciate the slower methodic pace of their shows. It gave us children a chance to let our imaginations truly take us away. The high speed, flashy, empty, low attention span stuff of today is nothing but merchandise pushing. So sad. Thank you to these wonderful gentlemen. I would also add Fred Penner to the list!

As a kid from immigrant parents growing up in Canada. I only saw Ernie Coombs/Mr. Dressup in his later years. The 90s was a magical time, he helped me learn English and probably aided in the morals that I was raised with. Forever Thankful :)

Awe, that's great to hear. As a kid from an immigrant family myself, I go back to the late 60's when I was just 5 years old when the 60's ended and into the 70's. Sure my mom watched it too. Don't know why but seeing Mr. Dressup just now, just made me tear up! We only had 4 channels and also Friendly Giant, Polka Dot Door, Chez Helene, Bobino (even though we weren't French, we watched the latter two because, well, only 4 channels). When Ernie Coomb's wife was struck and died as a result of a car accident Toronto late 90's early 2000's?) made National news and we just all felt sad for him.

Mr Dressup is the only celebrity that made me cry when I learned he died. His show was such a big part of my life when I was a kid. The Friendly Giant too. I finally got to meet Friendly when I was 34, and I asked if he’d give me an autograph. He kept postcards of him in costume with Jerome and Rusty in his car, and he signed one for me. Still have it. Both men were giants in my eyes.

I never wanted to meet Bob Homme (The Friendly Giant), because I quickly reached the height of 6'4" as I finished high school and did not want to lose the illusion that he really was a giant.
@chrisconnors7418
@chrisconnors7418 10 месяцев назад
Haha, yeah, I understand that. I didn’t recognize him until one of the lab assistants said, you know who that is talking to Charlie (our prof)? When he told us I irrationally thought, he’s not a giant. But, he was very friendly, gracious, and had some fun stories from the show. My classmates wanted an autograph but felt maybe it was too childish. I was 34, oldest student in the class, and I didn’t care-I walked right up, told him how much I’d liked his show as a kid, and got an autograph. Soon as I did that, all the other students surrounded him to talk to him and ask for autographs. He had to drive home (was nearby) to get more glossy postcard-sized pics because his car supply of pics ran out (he travelled around with the pics because so many people asked for his autograph). He may not have been an actual giant, but he did have that giant personality and gentleness about him.

As someone who grew up on the Great Lakes, I had the privilege to watch Mr Dressup, and Mr Rogers every day for many years as a child and into a teen. I was surprised to find that some of our Canadian content ended up being broadcast in California, like The Galloping Gourmet and The Friendly Giant. Internet Archive has vintage TV Guide issues from the mid 60s to 1970, and a few random 80s/90s and 2000s. What a treasure trove of television programming that, despite the paucity of channels, had an astonishing breadth of programs of all kinds. Even with all of our multiple channels/networks -- today's programming can't hold a candle to it. I too loved Mr. Dressup. Was a staple I watched when home sick from school, along with The Friendly Giant. But oh how I wish they had intact archives of the complete run of both shows. I guess they never thought the children who watched and loved them would grow up and cherish them and wish to pass on the joy to their own children. At least we have these few shows and clips to re-experience.

If anyone is wondering why kids are the way they are today is because TV is lacking shows like Mr. Dressup, the Friendly Giant, and Mr. Rogers. Like myself, there are 1000s of Canadians who grew up sitting glued to the TV watching these shows. Shows that taught kindness, good morals, and the difference between right and wrong. Sadly, most shows on TV now promote all that is wrong in this world. No coincidence. Long live Ernie Coombes, Bob Homme, and Fred Rogers. All three were a huge part in the lives of children growing up in the 60s, and 70s.

I can’t wait to watch this! I grew up watching Mr. Dressup in the late 80s and into the 90s during the latter part of his career. It’s so strange to think how long he’d already been doing the show at that point. I’m grateful for what he taught me as a child beyond just the entertainment. But also to the crew on the show and the people at CBC for supporting the show. Considering the types of programs that were already starting in the 80s and 90s that saw kids as product consumers, it must have taken many strong-willed and determined people to keep producing a wholesome and honest show like Mr. Dressup. Thank you Ernie!

Mr. Dress Up, The Friendly Giant and Unvle Bobby. The trifecta. I am 60 yrs old, and was a slow learner. These three shows helped me hang in there to keep trying to read and enjoy language. And music! Oh, the music! 🎉 They brought joy to a sad little girl. Being " stupid" is a hard label to carry.

Loved Mr. Dressup, along with Mr. Rogers, and The Friendly Giant. They were all 'Must See TV' as a child.

I still can’t believe Ernie Coombs did the 2002 revival cartoon of “Simon in the Land of Chalk Drawings”.

I somehow managed to go 36 years knowing Mister Rogers, but never once hearing about Mr. Dressup. I honestly clicked this video thinking it was going to be a parody documentary about Fred Rogers or something, but come to find it was this well-known thing to people. Feels like an alternate universe I stumbled into.

My goodness, how I loved Mr. Dressup! This brings back many happy memories of being a kid in the magical 70’s. I remember being excited to see him live on stage once when he and his show came to our town. Seeing the beloved Tickle Trunk in real life was amazing. Can’t wait to see this documentary.

Just finished watching this, lots of smiles and a few tears by the end. Growing up Mr Dressup for me wasn't simply a TV show as far as I was concerned he was my friend. Hearing his voice took me right back there. I learned from him, I laughed with him and I always kept my crayons sharp. Your so very missed Ernie. I hope your with your wife and that you know you'll always be in our hearts.

This cat was a huge part of my childhood. As well as The Friendly Giant, and Mr. Rogers, and Captain Kangaroo. Several others as well as those, but damn this hit me right in the nostalgia. Hearing the theme kick in quietly was brilliant.

I grew up watching Mr. Dressup in the mid-90's and it was one of my favourite shows. We didn't have cable as when I was a kid, so CBC and PBS was where I could watch children's programming. I never forgot about the show, I even had a photo of Mr. Dressup in a collage I did for a school project in Grade 8 (kind of like a who are you kinda thing), and was surprised by how many of my classmates remembered the show as well.
